Theoretical and practical development of the TOPSY self-management intervention for women who use a vaginal pessary for pelvic organ prolapse.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common condition in women, where the downward descent of pelvic organs into the vagina causes symptoms which impacts quality of life. Vaginal pessaries offer an effective alternative to surgery for the management of POP. However, the need for regular follow-up can be burdensome for women and requires significant healthcare resources. The TOPSY study is a randomised controlled trial which aims to determine the clinical and cost-effectiveness of self-management of vaginal pessaries. This paper describes the theoretical and practical development of the

Identification of occupations at high risk of exposure to environmental pollutants: A biomonitoring study using KoNEHS cycle 4 (2018-2020).

Occupational exposure to environmental hazardous chemicals poses health risks, yet nationwide evidence across diverse occupational groups remains limited. This study aimed to assess exposure levels to environmental hazardous chemicals across occupational groups among Korean adults and to identify chemicals and occupations potentially overlooked in current management systems. Data were obtained from 2974 adults in the Fourth Korean National Environmental Health Survey (2018-2020). Occupations were classified into 21 groups based on the Korean Standard Classification of Occupations. Thirty-two c

Overcoming barriers to polio eradication in challenging subnational geographies: lessons from South Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, 2022-2024.

The global polio program has relied on supplementary immunization activities (SIA) in countries where routine immunization (RI) coverage is suboptimal. During these SIAs, oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) is administered to all children under the age of 5 years. However, implementing SIAs in areas with insecurity and conflict, such as the South Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (South KP) region of Pakistan is very challenging because of attacks against vaccination teams and community boycotts among other reasons. These challenges sometimes lead to cancelation, delays, and poor quality of immunization campaigns.

A proposed comprehensive model of care for inflammatory bowel disease in Poland.

Epidemiological data of the Polish healthcare model of care indicate that the current management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) requires improvements in clinical practice and service organization. Integrated care models for patients with IBD, particularly those centred on a multidisciplinary team, offer a promising approach to improving outcomes, reducing admissions, and rationalizing resources. The coordination of specialists, nurses, dietitians, psychologists, and other professionals within a single reference unit could strengthen continuity of care with primary care providers and enabl

Left-Sided Amyand's Hernia Managed Without Appendectomy: A Case Report of a Rare Diagnosis.

Hernias are defined as protrusions of an organ or its fascia through the wall of a cavity. Amyand's hernia, in turn, is a rare subtype in which the vermiform appendix is part of the hernial content. We report the case of a 45-year-old Angolan patient with a large left-sided Amyand's hernia, which appeared in childhood at the age of 5, with progressive enlargement and an inability to manually reduce the contents for the past seven years. He was referred from the Hospital Militar Principal/Instituto Superior in Luanda, Angola. Large inguinoscrotal hernias remain frequent in African countries, of

A new paradigm in chronic bladder pain.

The concept of visceral pain has moved from organ-centered disease to a conceptualization based on pathophysiological mechanisms, integrating psychosocial and sexual dimensions. The terms painful bladder syndrome and bladder pain syndrome have been coined to include all patients with bladder pain. There is substantial overlap between IC/BPS and other pelvic/abdominal pain syndromes IC/BPS is likely to be underdiagnosed and undertreated in both men and women IC/BPS requires a multidisciplinary team approach toward management. This report is adapted from paineurope 2014; Issue 2, ©Haymarket Medi

Caring for children with spinal muscular atrophy in Greece: parents' and caregivers' experience with the healthcare system.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare disease characterized by challenges in its management both for patients and parents/caregivers. In Greece, these challenges are exacerbated by the lack of an integrated SMA patient pathway. This survey mapped the experiences of parents of SMA pediatric patients with the Greek healthcare system, highlighting the actual pathway, its impact on quality of life, and associated financial burden. METHODS: Parents of children living with SMA, who were members of MDA Hellas, a non-profit organization for people with neuromuscular diseases in Greece

Impact of Burnout on Anaesthesiologists.

Professional burnout syndrome (PBS) is an issue affecting individuals and organizations alike, characterized by emotional exhaustion and reduced effectiveness resulting from overwhelming work demands. Root causes include excessive workload, unrealistic expectations, and blurred work-life boundaries, which are often intensified by organizational culture and inadequate support systems. The consequences range from decreased productivity and creativity to high turnover rates and financial strain on organizations. Mitigating PBS requires a comprehensive approach that addresses both individual and o

An interdisciplinary mixed-methods systematic review of multidimensional factors shaping the outpatient waiting experience.

BACKGROUND: Patient satisfaction is a central indicator of healthcare quality and a key outcome in outpatient care. The waiting room, as the first point of contact, strongly shapes patients' comfort, expectations, and perceptions of service quality. Yet most existing studies remain confined within single disciplinary domains rather than integrated relationships among them. This lack of cross-disciplinary synthesis limits theoretical understanding and practical guidance. A systematic review is therefore needed to develop a comprehensive framework for improving outpatient experiences and support

Reconceptualizing safe abortion and abortion services in the age of abortion pills: A discussion paper.

At the conference "Developing an Advocacy Agenda for Abortion in the 21st Century and Making Change Happen" held on 5-7 September 2018, Lisbon, Portugal, organized by the International Campaign for Women's Right to Safe Abortion, it was argued that abortion services not only need to be treated as a bona fide form of health care but also completely reconceptualized, particularly because of the influence of medical abortion pills. It emerged, however, that there is no consensus on how this reconceptualization should be configured. Indeed, substantial differences arose, or so it appeared, complic

Navigating sexual and reproductive health among Venezuelan women sex workers in Peru: Qualitative explorations of structural vulnerability and resistance.

Migration to Peru from Venezuela has reshaped engagement in informal labour for many women who turn to sex work as a survival strategy amid legal precarity and systemic exclusion. Yet little is known about how migrant sex workers navigate sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in this context. In 2023, we conducted 34 semi-structured interviews with Venezuelan migrant cisgender women sex workers living in Lima, Peru. Interviews explored migration trajectories, working conditions, SRH needs, and experiences seeking care. Analysis was guided by the Structural Vulnerability Framework, contextualizi
