BACKGROUND: Recent trends suggest that bilateral mastectomy (BM) is on the rise among women diagnosed with unilateral breast cancer. Few studies have investigated the factors associated with the decision to have more aggressive surgery among young, high risk patients.
METHODS: As part of a larger study, 284 women aged 50 and under completed an initial survey within 6 weeks of a breast cancer diagnosis. We assessed sociodemographics, medical and family history variables, treatment recommendations, preferences and concerns, distress, perceived risk, knowledge, and neuroticism. We used multiple

The incidence of postoperative wound complications and early cancer recurrence was studied in 289 patients who had mastectomy alone and in 113 patients who underwent immediate reconstruction following mastectomy. Patients undergoing immediate reconstruction were younger and had less advanced disease than patients who had mastectomy alone. The postoperative hospital stay was 3.8 days and 4.4 days (p < 0.05) in patients with and without reconstruction, respectively. The overall incidence of postoperative complications was similar in the two groups of patients: 31% and 28% in patients with and wi

During the period 1933-1983, 124 men (median age 62.5 years, range 33-86 years) were treated for breast carcinoma. Median length of follow-up was 6.7 years and was complete for 93% of patients. Presenting complaints were most frequently a mass (95%) or pain (31%) while physical examination revealed the tumour to be central in 95% of patients with nipple or skin retraction in 36% and associated gynaecomastia in 12%. Twenty-seven per cent of the patients had a positive family history of breast cancer, 6% noted previous breast trauma and 7% had prior chest wall irradiation. Mean tumour size was 2

RATIONALE: Locoregional recurrence of breast cancer is a challenging issue for clinicians. Treatment options for unresectable recurrent estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer in previously irradiated area are limited. Some studies showed concomitant fulvestrant with radiation therapy might increase radiosensitivity compared with radiation alone in vitro, no in vivo reports yet.
PATIENT CONCERN: Here, we present a case report and make a narrative review of concomitant fulvestrant with radiation therapy for unresectable locoregional recurrent ER+ breast cancer. The patient was treated w

PURPOSE: Retrolaminar block (RLB) is a thoracic truncal block that can produce analgesia for the thoracic and abdominal wall. However, the characteristics of RLB are not well known. The aim of this study was to determine analgesic efficacy by measuring postoperative consume of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), additional nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) rescue, and opioid rescue. Our secondary analysis included assessment of the chronological change in arterial levobupivacaine concentrations after the block.
METHODS: This prospective, randomized, double-blinded study included 30 p

Primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the breast is a very rare tumour. We present a case with pure signet ring cell carcinoma of the breast, which was recognized as metastasis on the pelvic floor, before developing breast symptoms and signs. A 40-year old woman was admitted with abdominal pain. First diagnostic effort revealed a cystic mass on the pelvic floor, compressing the colon and other neighbouring organs. A biopsy of the pelvic mass was performed. The histopathological examination revealed metastatic signet-ring cell carcinoma. At the time of the first operation, the mammary glands we

PURPOSE: As the feasibility of breast preservation in locally advanced breast cancer is currently under evaluation, little information is available correlating mammographic changes to chemotherapy with local outcome. To evaluate the role of mammography in selecting candidates with locally advanced breast cancer for conservative local therapy, we analyzed mammographic changes in the breast to induction chemotherapy and correlated the radiologic appearance with pathologic outcome.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: From 1985 through 1993, 91 patients with Stage III breast cancer were enrolled on a multimod

The diagnosis of carcinoma of the breast during pregnancy poses a challenging dilemma. Although once regarded as incurable, recent reports reveal similar long term survival rates for pregnant and nonpregnant patients who have carcinoma of the breast. When referred to a surgeon, a pregnant woman with a suspicious mammary mass deserves an expedient histologic diagnosis; delay may jeopardize the chances of survival. Once the diagnosis is established, pregnant patients should be treated in a manner similar to nonpregnant patients because there is no evidence that carcinoma of the breast in pregnan

INTRODUCTION: Pancreatic schwannoma (PS) is an extremly rare benign tumor. Less than 50 cases of pancreatic schwannoma have been described in the English literature over the past thirty years.
PRESENTATION OF CASE REPORT: A 63-year-old female underwent left modified radical mastectomy 2 years ago due to breast cancer. During her routine check-up, a 65×63×55mm measured calcified, well-demarcated, cystic-mass having septations and calcifications that localized to the pancreatic head was detected by abdominal computerized tomography. She was asymptomatic and her tumor markers were in normal rang

PURPOSE: To determine the overall survival and local recurrence significance of axillary lymph node extranodal tumor extension (ETE) and whether axillary/chest-wall irradiation influenced any of these outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The records of 81 breast cancer patients treated with radical or modified radical mastectomy at a single surgical practice were eligible for study. Thirty-four patients had ETE: 17 with focal ETE (< 10 x high-power field) and 17 with extensive ETE (> 10 x high-power field).
RESULTS: With a median follow-up duration of 92 months, only two patients had an axillary

Ovarian cancer patients with BRCA1 mutation have more susceptibility for secondary breast cancer. In females with BRCA1 mutation, the risk of developing breast carcinoma is 65% and of ovarian cancer is 39%, before 70 years of age. This is a case report of a 74 year old, post-menopausal woman diagnosed with metastatic retroperitoneal lymph node, high-grade papillary adenocarcinoma primary ovary stage IIIA in April 2004 at the age of 48 years. She underwent 3 cycles of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy Inj. Methotrexate and Inj. Carboplatin from June to August 2004 followed by optimum cytoreduction in S

INTRODUCTION: The international standard for post-operative radiotherapy for breast cancer delivers hypofractionated radiotherapy. However, many centers in India still follow the longer conventional schedule probably because of paucity of large prospective trials in Indian patients on the same and apprehension regarding tolerance of high dose per fraction in the said population. We aimed to test the feasibility of hypofractionation in our setting and compared the toxicities and the quality of life in patients receiving conventional and hypofractionated radiotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: Phyllodes tumors are rare fibroepithelial neoplasms of the breast, account for less than 1 % of all breast neoplasms, lymph node metastasis is even rare and routine axillary dissection is not recommended. Approximately 20 % of patients with malignant phyllodes tumors develop distant metastasis.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 45 years old premenopausal female, presented with a huge right breast mass for 3 years. Physical examination revealed a 40 × 46 cm, lobulated mass, fixed to the chest wall and multiple enlarged and mobile ipsilateral axillary lymphadenopathy. Core tissue biopsy reveale

AIM: Several randomized trials on conservative surgery compared with mastectomy in early-stage breast cancer have validated this technique in terms of local and distant relapse and survival of patients. Standard conservative approach includes surgical removal of the cancer with adequate cancer-free margins, axillary dissection, postoperative breast irradiation and adjuvant treatments when required.
METHODS: From 1987 to 2003, 500 early stage breast carcinoma were treated on 494 patients with conservative surgery and postoperative radiotherapy. Surgery consisted in a wide tumorectomy, with int

The rate of axillary lymph node metastases is low in early stage breast carcinoma and axillary lymph node dissection is controversial in the treatment of these patients. Intraoperative lymphatic mapping technique is suggested for the identification of metastatic lymph nodes. Intraoperative lymphatic mapping was performed on 60 clinical stage I and II patients who were treated at Ankara Oncology Hospital between 1996-1998. Patent blue dye was injected in all cases, as the tumor was totally excised before mastectomy, into the surrounding breast tissue at four different quadrants. Presence of met

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of superficial and deep serratus anterior plane blocks (SAPB) for simple mastectomy and modified radical mastectomy (MRM). The primary outcome was cumulative morphine consumption at 24 h. Secondary aims included pain scores, rescue analgesic and antiemetic requirement, nausea and vomiting incidence, and patient satisfaction. METHODS: Patients were randomized to the superficial or deep SAPB group. Superficial or deep SAPB was applied with 30 ml of 0.25% bupivacaine above or below the serratus anterior muscle, respectively. Postoperative p

BACKGROUND: We present a patient with a history of mastectomy and breast reconstruction for breast cancer who was found to have ipsilateral internal mammary lymphadenopathy on diagnostic imaging performed for a benign contralateral breast abnormality. As newly identified lymphadenopathy in breast cancer patients may indicate metastasis requiring treatment, a comprehensive workup confirmed silicone-induced lymphadenitis, a rare inflammatory condition that closely mimics malignancy. The pathognomonic imaging findings are crucial for diagnosing silicone lymphadenitis. While relatively straightfor

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a secondary lymphedema that occurs after breast cancer related treatments. BCRL develops from damage or dysfunction of the normally functioning lymphatic system due to surgery, radiation therapy, and rarely due to cancer recurrence. This nationwide, retrospective study was aimed at investigating the incidence and risk factors of BCRL using the database of the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS).
METHODS: Patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer who underwent breast surgery from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2020, were recru

BACKGROUND: This study was performed to validate the prognostic significance of residual axillary lymph node metastases in patients with locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and to analyze other clinicopathologic factors that might be independent predictors of disease-free survival (DFS) in an attempt to identify patients in whom axillary dissection might be omitted.
METHODS: One hundred sixty-five assessable patients with LABC were treated in a prospective trial of neoadjuvant chemotherapy utilizing four cycles of 5-fluorouracil, doxorubicin, and cyclop
