A morphological study of the multi infraorbital canals of the maxilla in the Japanese macaque by cone-beam computed tomography.

The infraorbital canal in the Japanese macaque is composed of main and accessory canals. However, the morphological features of the infraorbital canal, such as the canal course and the supply of infraorbital vessels and nerves in the maxilla, are poorly characterized. In this study, we show the structure of the infraorbital canal of the Japanese macaque (adults; 10 male, 9 female), including the distribution of these vessels and nerves, using cone-beam computed tomography and a macroscopic apparatus. The superior and lateral margins of the orbit were correlated with the infraorbital canal on t

Distribution of the internal nasal branch of the infraorbital nerve to the nasal septum: Application to rhinoplasty.

BACKGROUND: The course of the nerves along the nasal septum has not been clearly studied, and surgical procedures such as rhinoplasty require a more detailed topography of the nerve supply inside the septum. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the distribution of the internal nasal branch of the infraorbital nerve inside the nasal septum and to define the relationship between it and the nasal cartilages. METHODS: Fourteen sides from eight fresh frozen and embalmed Caucasian cadaveric heads were dissected. The specimens were derived from three males and five females. The ages of the cadavers at

A Rare Complication of Infraorbital Nerve Hyperesthesia in Surgically Repaired Orbital Fracture Patients.

Injury to the peripheral sensory branches of the trigeminal nerve can follow a wide variety of craniofacial injuries. Many patients with facial fractures complain about the symptom of numbness to the distribution of injured nerve, which is indicative of hypoesthesia. Hyperesthesia involving the infraorbital nerve is rare in comparison to hypoesthesia secondary to facial trauma. The authors report on 2 patients with infraorbital nerve hyperesthesia in surgically repaired orbital fracture patients. Surgical decompression of the infraorbital nerve led to rapid resolution of hyperesthesia. To the

Intraoperative relationship between the retromandibular vein and the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve: a prospective surgical study and literature review.

PURPOSE: To prospectively evaluate the intraoperative relationship between the retromandibular vein (RMV) and the marginal mandibular branch (MMB) or inferior facial nerve division during parotidectomy, and to synthesize the relevant anatomical and surgical literature. METHODS: Consecutive parotidectomy procedures performed over a one-year period were prospectively evaluated. The RMV-MMB/inferior facial nerve relationship was recorded intraoperatively, and variants were photographed and documented. A structured narrative literature review was performed to identify cadaveric, fetal, radiologic

Expanded Endonasal Approach for Resection of Extradural Infratemporal Fossa Trigeminal Schwannoma: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

The infratemporal fossa (ITF) is bounded superiorly by the skull base, specifically the greater wing of the sphenoid, which contains foramen ovale. It is bordered posteriorly by the temporal bone, including the petrous portion of the carotid canal, anteriorly by the posterior wall of the maxillary sinus, laterally by the mandible, and medially by the pterygoid body and lateral pterygoid plate.1-3 In this video, we report a case of a rare, exclusively extradural, schwannoma originating from the third division of the trigeminal nerve with a widened foramen ovale at the skull base. The tumor fill

Blindness after Le Fort I osteotomy: a possible complication associated with pterygomaxillary separation.

INTRODUCTION: Visual loss after Le Fort I osteotomy is a devastating complication the mechanism of which is not always clear. METHODS: A case report of blindness following Le Fort I osteotomy is presented. The literature on the various skull base complications associated with Le Fort I osteotomies is reviewed and the mechanisms of these complications discussed. CONCLUSION: The radiological findings in this case are similar to those previously reported. They strongly support the hypothesis that an adverse transmission of forces associated with pterygomaxillary separation via the sphenoid bone

A Distinctive Histological Form of Squamous Cell Carcinoma With Perineural Invasion.

A modest proportion of individuals diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) display perineural invasion (PNI), the neoplastic invasion of one or more nerves. It is associated with a marked increase in mortality in patients with SCC and is oftentimes only diagnosed after a significant invasion occurs. An 84-year-old male, otherwise in good health, presented to us with a fast-growing, 3-cm nodule on his right malar region associated with paresthesia and radiating pain. Biopsy of the lesion revealed moderately differentiated infiltrative squamous cell carcinoma, which was later discovered to

Desmoplastic neurotropic melanoma in a patient with trigeminal neuralgia: FDG PET/CT and MRI.

A 51-year-old man presented with a hard subcutaneous nodule adhering to the underlying bone structures of the left eyelid in 2004. Histopathology showed a desmoplastic neurotropic melanoma (DNM) with perineural invasion. Patient presented with a first recurrence in October 2005, which was treated by surgery. In August 2006 he presented with trigeminal neuralgia of the left face in the area innervated by the first and second branches of the trigeminal nerve. A PET scan clearly shows the tumoral hypermetabolism of the subcutaneous recurrence of the neurotropic melanoma with invasion of the secon

Neurinomas of the trigeminal nerve.

Trigeminal neurinomas account for about 0.2 per cent of all intracranial tumors and for about 2 to 3 per cent of all intracranial neurinomas. Trigeminal neurinomas occur most frequently in persons in the middle decades of life, with the highest incidence between the ages of 38 and 40 years. They show no sex predilection. Although very rare, trigeminal neurinomas are of considerable interest to the neurotologist because of their relation to the temporal bone, skull base, sphenoid and maxillary sinuses, nasopharynx, infratemporal fossa, and, in rare instances, the oral cavity. In addition to pro

Is injury to the inferior alveolar nerve still common during orthognathic surgery? Manual twist technique for sagittal split ramus osteotomy.

The osteotomy in a bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) is made in close proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN), so direct damage to the nerve and irreversible neurosensory deficit may result. The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of injury to the nerve when a conventional osteotomy using an osteotome was made, with that after manual twist splitting. We retrospectively reviewed the casenotes of 769 consecutive patients who had bilateral SSRO either alone or with a simultaneous maxillary procedure by a single surgeon from May 2009 - October 2016. Patients were d

Beyond the Mandibular Canal: A Narrative Review of Inferior Alveolar Nerve Variations and Their Clinical Significance.

The inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) is commonly presented as a relatively constant branch of the mandibular nerve that gives rise to the mylohyoid nerve (MHN), enters the mandibular foramen, follows a single mandibular canal, and terminates as mental and incisive branches. However, direct human anatomical evidence shows substantially greater complexity. This critical narrative review synthesizes cadaveric, microdissection, histological, imaging, and osteological evidence on proximal IAN roots, relationships with the maxillary artery, communications with neighboring mandibular nerve branches, MHN

Buccal-masseteric mycotic abscess as a consequence of dental procedures.

Trismus may represent an external sign of masticatory or lateral pharyngeal abscess that in rare cases is the consequence of pathogen action by micro-organisms introduced in deep tissues after inferior alveolar block. The case presented shows a buccal-masseteric mycotic abscess following restorative procedure involving inferior alveolar anesthesia on the same side. A 49-year-old woman was referred to the Dental Clinic (University of Trieste) complaining of a progressive inability to open her mouth since one week associated to a hemifacial edema in the right parotid region. The symptoms initial

Effects of glycerol on the rat infraorbital nerve: an experimental study.

Glycerol was injected into the infraorbital canal of 12 rats to determine neurolytic effects on the peripheral trigeminal nerve. Saline and 90% ethanol were injected in control animals. One week after the injection, histopathological changes were noted in both glycerol and alcohol groups. In the former group, axonolysis and demyelination were restricted to the outer zone of the nerve bundles. Centrally located axons remained undamaged. A total destruction of all axons was found in the alcohol group. Four weeks after the injection in the glycerol group, small sized axons with thin myelin replac

Neuropathy of the infraorbital area following rapid palatal expansion: A case report.

RATIONALE: Neuropathic pain in the orofacial region, although relatively uncommon, can occur after dental procedures performed in trigeminally innervated areas. Miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) is widely adopted to correct maxillary transverse deficiency in adults and is generally safe; however, neurosensory complications are rarely documented. This case highlights infraorbital neuropathy following MARPE, underscoring the need for clinical vigilance. PATIENT CONCERNS: A healthy 28-year-old female presented with numbness and tenderness on the left midface approximately 5 week

Orthognathic surgery-related nerve injuries: analysis and treatment modalities.

BACKGROUND: Orthognathic surgery, while highly effective in correcting dentofacial deformities, inherently poses a risk of neurosensory complications. Despite the growing volume of these surgical procedures, real-world data remain limited concerning the precise incidence, clinical course, and efficacy of various therapeutic interventions for nerve injuries in this specific context. This study aims to delineate the incidence, anatomical distribution, and treatment outcomes of trigeminal nerve injuries observed after orthognathic surgery within a tertiary care center. METHODS: This retrospectiv

A Hypothesis and Pilot Study of Age-Related Sensory Innervation of the Hard Palate: Sensory Disorder After Nasopalatine Nerve Division.

BACKGROUND The nasopalatine nerve may be injured during extraction of teeth embedded in the anterior hard palate. The neural recovery process and its impact on sensation in the anterior hard palatal region are controversial. In our clinical practice, we noticed a distinct recovery process in children compared with adolescents or adults after surgery. We hypothesized that the sensory innervations of the anterior palate might shift during later childhood and pre-adolescence, which is due to the development of the nasopalatine nerve along with the maxillary growth and permanent teeth eruption. Leprosy and its dental management guidelines.

OBJECTIVES: Leprosy is a chronic, non-fatal disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. It can cause cutaneous lesions, peripheral nerve lesions and orofacial manifestations, including destruction of the alveolar premaxillary process associated with loss of the maxillary incisors. The aims of this study were to assess orofacial manifestations of disease in patients attending the Bombay Leprosy Project clinics and develop clinical guidelines for dentists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire based study was administered to 43 diagnosed leprosy patients. This included questions on

Nasopalatine Duct Cyst with Impacted Inverted Mesiodens: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

Nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC) is a non-odontogenic, developmental epithelial cyst that accounts for 1% of maxillary cysts. It often arises due to the spontaneous proliferation of the epithelial tissue remnants, although trauma, bacterial infection, and mucous retention may also trigger the proliferation. Owing to its slow-growing, asymptomatic nature, the cyst is often discovered as an accidental finding during routine clinical and radiographic examinations. However, the majority of cases present as a tiny, asymptomatic swelling just posterior to the palatine papillae. Radiographically, it app
