Primary Ewing's Sarcoma of Maxillary sinus: A Case Report.

Ewing's sarcoma are small round cell tumors belonging to Ewing's family of tumors and the second most common bone tumor seen in children. The most common affected sites are long bones of extremities followed by pelvis and ribs. Primary arising in head and neck region is uncommon and maxillary Ewing's sarcoma is rarely seen. Histologically it is one of many small round cell tumors found in children and therefore immunohistochemical and occasionally molecular studies are required to establish the diagnosis. Imaging features include aggressive bony destruction with periosteal reaction and associa

Removal of Maxillary Sinus Antrolith and Concomitant Intrasinus Augmentation.

Maxillary sinus antrolithisis is a rare finding. Conservative surgical removal recommended. In the patients that need to maxillary intrasinus augmentation and antrolith is observed in preoperative radiography, 2 options remain. First, doing Caldwell-luc surgery to remove antrolith and delayed open sinus lift. Second way is removing antrolith and concomitant intrasinus augmentation. The first way has 2 disadvantages: prolonged waiting period and difficulty of open sinus lift in sinuses with scar and fibrosis. Coupling these 2 surgeries and using corticocancellous bone block as grafting material …

Osseous metaplasia showing heterotopic ossification in the maxillary sinus.

Radiopacity in the maxillary sinus can be observed in various conditions, such as in the presence of lesions in the maxillary sinus or as a sequela of maxillary sinus surgery. This report describes the case of a 57-year-old female patient who had no previous history of surgical treatment or traumatic injury of the nose or maxillary sinus. Both maxillary sinuses were indistinguishable on panoramic radiography and showed signs of radiopacity. Computed tomography images revealed that the maxillary sinuses were filled with bony tissue and exhibited signs of sinus mucosal thickening. Biopsy results…

Temporal instability of the post-surgical maxillary sinus microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis is an inflammatory disorder in which the role of bacteria remains uncertain. While sinus outflow obstruction is often an initiating event, mucosal inflammation and dysbiosis may persist or develop in sinuses with widely patent surgical openings. Understanding of the relationship between dysbiosis and chronic sinus inflammation is obfuscated by inter-individual microbiota variability and likely intra-individual temporal variation that has yet to be defined. In this study, long-term microbiota stability is investigated within surgically-opened maxillary sinuses…

Endoscopic Removal of a Dental Implant From Maxillary Sinus.

The displacement of a dental implant into the maxillary sinus during surgery or after a period of use is a complication defined in the dental implant clinical practice. This complication arises primarily from inadequate bone height and peri-implant infection. Specifically, foreign objects in the maxillary sinus can cause sinusitis via impaired mucociliary flow and foreign body reactions, so they must be removed. Caldwell-Luc, transnasal, and intraoral endoscopic sinus surgeries have all been used to remove such foreign bodies and lesions from maxillary sinuses. In this article, the authors pre…

Objective:To explore the CT, MRI manifestations of the polyp of maxillary sinus cavernous hemangioma. To summarize the imaging characteristics and it may assist doctors to diagnose infarcted angiomatous polyps in maxillary sinus with further developing.Method:A retrospective analysis of the CT, MRI manifestations and clinical analysis about 27 cases confirmed by surgery pathology who are maxillary sinus cavernous hemangioma.Result:Twenty-seven cases were unilateral diseases, and clinical manifestations were nasal congestion. Twenty-seven cases were proceeded CT scan, of which 9 cases of double…

Unilateral Maxillary Sinus Actinomycosis with a Closed Oroantral Fistula.

Actinomycosis is a bacterial infection due to Actinomyces israelii, a gram-positive, anaerobic organism that normally affects the cervicofacial region. However, facial injury or trauma (i.e., dental procedures) can allow this bacteria to inhabit other regions. There have been rare reports of actinomycosis of the paranasal sinuses. We present a case of a 50-year-old female who originally presented with a suspected oroantral fistula who subsequently was found to have actinomycosis involving her right maxillary sinus. Additionally, the dental extraction site revealed no connection with the maxill…

Primary sinonasal tuberculosis confined to the unilateral maxillary sinus.

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis is not rare and occurs mainly in the head and neck region. Cervical tuberculous lymphadenopathy is the most comm … and nonspecific clinical presentation. We report a case of tuberculosis confined to the unilateral maxillary sinus that was first misdiagnosed as recurrent rhinosinusitis after endoscopic sinus surgery.

Osteolytic nasal polyp of the maxillary sinus mimicking malignancy.

We present an osteolytic nasal polyp of the maxillary sinus with clinical features and radiographic features mimicking that of a malignancy. Maxillary sinusitis being a common inflammatory condition progressed to cause destruction of the maxillary bone and spread into the facial soft tissue, which is quite a rare occurrence. We have discussed in detail the clinical, radiological, histopathology and management of this uncommon presentation of a common case.

Primary schwannoma of maxillary sinus masquerading as malignant tumour.

Polyp and mucocele are the commonest sinonasal tumours and schwannoma is rarely found in the paranasal sinuses. We report a case of a 64-year-old man presenting with progressive nasal obstruction and numbness on left cheek for the past 2 months. High-resolution CT found a soft tissue mass in the maxillary antrum with bony destruction. Clinical features, radiological scan and nasal endoscopic examination were suggestive of a malignant tumour. Tumour was excised through Caldwell-Luc's approach and histopathological examination found a mixed schwannoma.

Effect of maxillary sinus floor augmentation without bone grafts.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present review was to determine the effectiveness of maxillary sinus floor augmentation without bone grafts using lateral window technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed and Cochrane databases were searched for relevant articles. We also included articles by hand search until June 2012. The analysis included both human and animal studies which satisfied the following criteria: Minimum of 6 months follow-up, no use of bone grafts, and lateral window approach to the sinus. RESULTS: We included 22 articles in the review. A descriptive analysis of the constructed …

Illosis of maxillary sinus in immunocompromised patient. Case report.

Aspergillosis, which was first discovered in late 19th century, is a relatively rare disease in the sinuses. In recent years, a number of invasive aspergillosis infections of the maxillary sinus in immunocompromised patients, as well as the non-invasive form of the disease, have been reported. They were caused by the materials used in endodontic treatment, like gutta-percha, antrolith and by foreign bodies. This paper reports a case of aspergillosis in the maxillary sinus of an immunocompromised patient. It is associated with a root fragment after a much earlier tooth extraction.
