Associations between Periapical Health of Maxillary Molars and Mucosal Thickening of Maxillary Sinuses in Cone-beam Computed Tomographic Images: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: This retrospective study aimed to assess the radiologic characteristics of the possible associations between mucosal thickening of the maxillary sinuses (MSs) and periodontal and anatomic conditions of healthy and diseased maxillary teeth. METHODS: The periapical health of the maxillary molars in cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images from 50 patients (mean age = 40.60±14.59 years) was evaluated using the CBCT-periapical index. Anatomic associations between maxillary molars and the inferior wall of the MSs and periodontal bone loss and its relation to MS pathology were ass

Management of odontogenic sinusitis related to dental implants and maxillary sinus grafting: a retrospective single-center study.

BACKGROUND: The increasing use of dental implants is changing the epidemiology of Odontogenic Sinusitis (ODS). Aside from endodontic causes, we frequently encounter problems caused by implant placement and bone augmentation techniques, which present a distinct pathophysiological profile compared to classic ODS. This study analyzed the clinical features of pre-implant (Group I) and implant-related ODS (Group II) to establish surgical management strategies according to the Felisati classification. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study analyzed 45 patients treated between December 2020

Assess the Association Between Periodontitis and Maxillary Sinusitis: A Cross-Sectional Cone-Beam Computerized Tomography (CBCT) Study.

Background/purpose Periodontal pathologies which are considered odontogenic in origin can be a major cause of maxillary sinusitis, along with other dental and non-dental causes. The aim of this study is to define and assess the relationship between periodontitis and maxillary sinusitis. Material and methods A total of 415 CBCT datasets of periodontitis patients were cross-sectionally evaluated. Alveolar bone loss and maxillary sinus mucosal thickening were measured in coronal and sagittal sections, these two variables represent the severity of periodontitis and maxillary sinusitis, respectivel…

Combined endoscopic and intra-oral approach for chronic maxillary sinusitis of dental origin-a prospective clinical study.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The traditional Caldwell-Luc approach for maxillary diseases has been criticized for its shortcomings such as removal of a large amount of bone, numbness of the teeth, flap dehiscence, and recurrent sinusitis. On account of its minimal invasiveness and physiological approach, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) has come to replace the Caldwell-Luc approach for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis. Chronic maxillary sinusitis of dental origin (CMSDO) is a less common variant on the chronic rhinosinusitis spectrum whose treatment involves simultaneous management of…

Root Cause Analysis: An Examination of Odontogenic Origins of Acute Maxillary Sinusitis in Both Immunocompetent & Immunocompromised Patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dental and periodontal diseases represent important but often overlooked causes of acute sinusitis. Our goal was to examine the prevalence of potential odontogenic sources of acute maxillary sinusitis according to immune status and their associations with sinusitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of maxillofacial computed tomography studies from 2013 to 2014 was performed. Each maxillary sinus and its ipsilateral dentition were evaluated for findings of acute sinusitis and dental/periodontal disease. RESULTS: Eighty-four patients (24 immunocompetent, 60…

Unusual Case of Sinusitis Related to Ectopic Teeth in the Maxillary Sinus Roof/Orbital Floor: A Report.

This article presents a case report of an adult patient with chronic sinusitis related to the presence of two erupted ectopic teeth located atypically in the maxillary sinus roof/orbital floor after a long latency period associated with childhood facial trauma. This article aims to show the treatment of chronic sinusitis of odontogenic origin by surgical removal of ectopic teeth in an unusual position by direct visualization. This case report discusses the signs and symptoms of chronic sinusitis linked to the presence of ectopic elements and associated with an inflammatory cyst, the choice of

Endoscopic sinus surgery in individuals with facial pain due to chronic maxillary sinusitis - a functional controlled study.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the intra-sinus pressure and the maxillary sinus functional efficiency (MSFE) in individuals with chronic facial pain after conservative or conventional endoscopic maxillary surgery, as well as in controls. METHOD: Sinus manometry was performed 5 times during inhalation. RESULTS: The resemblance of pressure values comparing those treated with minimally invasive surgery and controls was remarkable, while traditional surgery significantly decreased intrasinusal pressures. The MSFE was 100% in the three tested times for controls, close to that in those submitted to minimal

Sinus augmentation surgery after endoscopic sinus surgery for the treatment of chronic maxillary sinusitis: a case report.

Chronic sinusitis develops when the ostiomeatal complex becomes stenosed by the swelling of the sinus mucosa. Previously, the Caldwell-Luc method was performed for the treatment of chronic sinusitis. But postoperative complications, such as discomfort of the buccal skin and recurrence of sinusitis, frequently occurred after the operation. Today, endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) has become widely used for the treatment of chronic sinusitis. The features of ESS allow for the restoration of the physical function of the sinus membrane and preservation of the physiological environment of the sinus. T

[Cilia abnormalities in chronic maxillary sinusitis. a transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopic investigation (author's transl)].

In the resistance of respiratory diseases the mucociliary clearance is a very important factor. Among them the cilia play a decisive role. The normal structure and some variations of the cilia in the maxillary sinus are described using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The following cilia abnormalities were observed: cilia with a single axonema and excess cytoplasmic matrix; compound cilia and giant cilia with 2-4 and more complete or incomplete axonemata; development of cells, which have secretory granules like goblet cells and cilia like normal ciliated cells. Further the outgro

ENT specialists' knowledge and their skills in detecting maxillary sinusitis of odontogenic origin, a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) is recognized in literature, but diagnosing it is challenging due to its different and overlapping clinical presentations of it. Misdiagnosis can lead to persistent symptoms and clinical burden. Interestingly, recent guidelines from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery lack recommendations for dental evaluation in adult sinusitis cases. AIM: To assess ENT physicians' knowledge and skills in diagnosing maxillary sinusitis of odontogenic origin. This study may emphasize the importance of raising awareness to help in prope…

Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis Caused by an Aspergilloma in the Context of Inadequately Treated Type II Diabetes Mellitus.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The prevalence of chronic sinusitis (CS) in Europe is greater than 10%. The causes of CS are diverse. In some cases, dental treatment in the maxilla as well as fungal infection, such as aspergilloma, can lead to CS. Inadequately treated illnesses, such as type II diabetes, are known risk factors for atypical infections. CASE REPORT: The present case report describes a 72-year-old female suffering from CS in the maxillary sinus. A few years earlier, the patient received endodontic treatment of a maxillary tooth. For further diagnostics a CT-scan was performed showing an obstruc
