A case of measles encephalitis in a man aged 18 years was described. Attention is called to the relatively rare occurrence of such neurological complications in measles, diagnostic difficulties and good therapeutic results after corticosteroids and antiviral drugs. For reducing the incidence of measles and its neurological complications the author suggests the usefulness of protective re-vaccination against measles.

During an outbreak of measles in the Southern Province in 1990, 69 patients were admitted to the Professorial Paediatric Unit of Teaching Hospital Galle. Of these, 13 patients had received the measles vaccination. The commonest complication seen was bronchopneumonia. There were 3 deaths, 2 due to bronchopneumonia and 1 to encephalitis.

The incidence, mortality and clinical features of measles enteritis were reported among 6484 infants and children admitted to the Pediatric Ward Dr. Pirngadi General Hospital Medan from 1st January 1987 until 31st December 1988. Membranous laryngotracheobronchitis is a very serious infection which affects the larynx, trachea and bronchi, requiring aggressive therapeutic measures. It has been recently rediscovered as a cause of disease in children. However, it is a very unusual complication of measles.
