Threadworms are common parasites. They live in the intestine and migrate to the anus, sometimes causing an itchy bottom. Children are often affected, especially the under 10s. Threadworms are not a serious health hazard and parents can be reassured that neither the worms nor the treatment are likely to lead to any harm. The whole household should be treated on the same day. Mebendazole is an effective treatment. Tell the family to keep their nails short and wash their hands and scrub their nails after using the toilet and before meals. These precautions will help prevent a recurrence. Wash und…

Life-cycle and endemic areas of Echinococcus alveolaris are described with reference to the autonomous character of this parasitosis. Especially human ways of infestation are shown with man's role as definitive host. The natural course of this parasitosis leads obligatory to lingering illness and death. Indication of exploratory laparotomy remains beyond doubt. Based on our own experience and corresponding with other authors importance of radical resection has to be propagated with reservation. Maintaining of the bile flow however is most important with regard to operative mortality, survival

Flubendazole, a parafluoro analoque of mebendazole, was given to 89 service men with hookworm, Trichuris trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides infections. The drug was given either as two doses of 300 mg at 12 hour interval (regimen A) or as two doses of 300 mg at 24 hour interval (regimen B). At four weeks follow-up the mean percentage egg reduction for hookworm was 88% and 96% in regimen A and B respectively. There were too few cases of Trichuris and Ascaris infection to allow comparison of the two regimens, but flubendazole appeared to be as effective and the single day regimen more convenient…

The efficacy of a single dose of benzimidazole, drugs commonly used for the treatment of Ascaris and hookworm, was evaluated against one of the tiny-sized intestinal flukes, Haplorchis sp in the endemic area where mixed infections of roundworms and flatworms existed. At day 7 after treatment, albendazole (400 mg) induced 42.5% cure rate, mebendazole (500 mg) a cure rate of 32.4%, on the other hand, praziquantel (40 mg/kg) gave 94.6% cure rate and the placebo at 15.9%. At the single dose, benzimidazole could not completely expelled the haplorchid; but could reduce one third to two fifth of the …

Biological parameters of immediate type hypersensitivity were assessed in 19 patients with alveolar echinococcosis. Serum total IgE concentrations were higher than normal values in 12 patients, and parasite-specific IgE were present in 9 patients. A significant relationship was observed between these two parameters. Evolution of specific IgE during a 1-year period appeared to correlate with surgical removal of parasitic material; it did not correlate with the clinical evolution in patients treated with mebendazole. Specific basophil fixed-IgE were demonstrated using both a basophil degranulati…

Clinical trials on the three broad spectrum anthelmintics against trichuriasis, ascariasis and hookworm infection were carried out in a rural community in Irosin, Sorsogon. Flubendazole (Fluvermal) appears to be a promising drug against trichuriasis particularly when periodic mass treatment of a community is carried out. Mebendazole (Antiox) also appears to be promising given as single dose during mass treatment of soil-transmitted helminthiasis. As shown in previous studies, oxantel-pyrantel (Quantrel) should be given at 15 mg/kg body weight at 12-hour intervals or 20 mg/kg body weight single…

Onchocerciasis is a devastating skin and eye disease that afflicts about 21 million people, most of whom live in sub-Saharan Africa. Its control with the microfilaricidal drug ivermectin is limited, thus necessitating the development of preclinical animal models to aid in the discovery of a macrofilaricide. Previously, we found that Onchocerca ochengi (the closest relative of the human O. volvulus) worm masses survive better in hamsters than in gerbils. The aim of this study was to compare the survival of O. ochengi adult male worms and their susceptibility to flubendazole (FBZ, a macrofilaric

PURPOSE: Onchocerciasis is a neglected tropical disease that remains endemic in sub-Saharan African countries. Unfortunately, only a few microfilaricidal agents have been approved so far. This study aimed to assess the in vitro macro and microfilaricidal potentialities of the hydro-methanolic extracts of the different powdery fractions of Khaya senegalensis against Onchocerca ochengi.
METHODS: Adult male worms and microfilariae (mf) of O. ochengi were isolated from cowhides in Ngaoundere II, Cameroon. Parasites were incubated for 4 h (mf) or 48 h (adult worms) in RPMI-1640 medium in the prese

There are currently three treatment options for liver hydatidosis: urgery, which remains the mainstay of radical treatment; ultrasound-guided aspiration (puncture/aspiration/injection/reaspiration--PAIR); and chemotherapy with benzimidazole compounds (albendazole and mebendazole). Chemotherapy is a noninvasive treatment and is less limited by the patient's status than surgery or PAIR but is not ideal when used alone. Albendazole, the drug most often used, appears to have the greatest efficacy of any agent used so far; nevertheless, apparent cure (shrinkage or disappearance of cysts) ranges onl…

Despite the ubiquity and varied manifestations of Ascaris lumbricoides infestation in man, gastric ascariasis is rare. Herein, three patients are described all of whom presented with features of chronic intermittent gastric outlet obstruction caused by roundworms inhabiting the stomach. The ascarides were demonstrated in the stomach by radiology in two patients and by endoscopic examination in one. The possible explanations for the rarity of "gastric ascariasis" include the "housekeeping" peristaltic activity and the acid milieu of the stomach.

Since the 1990s, the major approach to hookworm control has been morbidity reduction in school-aged children by periodic deworming with benzimidazoles. Now, efforts are underway to determine the feasibility of integrating deworming with control programs that target other neglected tropical diseases. However, the sustainability of benzimidazole deworming for hookworm is of concern because of the variable efficacy of mebendazole, high rates of post-treatment reinfection and possible development of drug resistance. This requires parallel efforts to develop new and complementary hookworm control t…

Fascioliasis, caused by the common liver fluke Fasciola hepatica, is an endemic infection in sheep and cattle in many parts of Australia. Infections in humans in Australia have been reported infrequently and the most appropriate therapy for human fascioliasis remains to be determined. This case report describes a patient with the infection unsuccessfully treated with multiple high doses of praziquantel, mebendazole or albendazole. The infection was successfully eliminated by the administration of triclabendazole in two single doses of 900 mg (12 mg/kg) two days apart. No side effects were obse…
