Overgeneral and specific autobiographical memory predict the course of depression: an updated meta-analysis.

Impairments in retrieving event-level, specific autobiographical memories, termed overgeneral memory (OGM), are recognised as a feature of clinical depression. A previous meta-analytic review assessing how OGM predicts the course of subsequent depressive symptoms showed small effects for correlations and regression analyses when baseline depressive symptoms were controlled for. We aimed to update this study and examine whether their findings replicate given the decade of research that has been published since. A systematic literature review using the same eligibility criteria as the previous m

Sleep, Prospective Memory, and Immune Status among People Living with HIV.

Background: Persons living with HIV (PLWH) frequently report sleep complaints, but objective measurements are still lacking regarding sleep continuity, total sleep time per 24 h, and the links with both prospective memory performance and HIV infection parameters. Methods: PLWH (n = 96) and control (n = 96) groups (balanced for gender and age) were monitored by 24h-actigraphy for at least seven consecutive days. The prospective memory performance was assessed through a naturalistic, activity-based task performed twice a day on the actigraph. Results: PLWH had greater sleep latency and worse sle

Risky decision-making as an antecedent or consequence of adolescent cannabis use: findings from a 2-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although poor decision-making (DM) has been correlated with problematic cannabis use (CU), cross-sectional designs make it difficult to determine whether poor DM represents an antecedent and/or consequence of CU. The current study measured bidirectional associations between CU and DM among adolescents over 2 years and compared these findings to those observed with episodic memory, which is consistently reported as a consequence of CU. We also measured the role of DM as a risk factor for cannabis use disorder (CUD) onset. DESIGN: Two-year longitudinal study with five bi-an

Levetiracetam for the treatment of mild cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease: a double-blind controlled proof-of-concept trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Mild memory impairment, termed amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), is associated with rapid progression towards dementia in Parkinson's disease (PD). Studies have shown hyperactivation of hippocampal DG/CA3 subfields during an episodic memory task as a biomarker of aMCI related to Alzheimer's disease. This project investigates the feasibility of a trial to establish the efficacy of a repurposed antiepileptic drug, levetiracetam, in low doses as a putative treatment to target DG/CA3 hyperactivation and improve episodic memory deficits in aMCI in PD. Based on previous work, it

The G72/G30 gene complex and cognitive abnormalities in schizophrenia.

A recently discovered gene complex, G72/G30 (hereafter G72, but now termed DAOA), was found to be associated with schizophrenia and with bipolar disorder, possibly because of an indirect effect on NMDA neurotransmission. In principle, if G72 increases risk for psychosis by this mechanism, it might impact with greater penetrance those cortically based cognitive and neurophysiological functions associated with NMDA signaling. We performed two independent family-based association studies (one sample contained more than 200 families and the other more than 65) of multiple SNPs in the G72 region an

Impact of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Adolescence, Young Adulthood, and Midlife on Late-Life Cognition: Study of Healthy Aging in African Americans.

BACKGROUND: Midlife cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) increase risk of dementia. Black Americans experience an elevated prevalence of CVRFs and dementia. However, little is known of how CVRFs prior to midlife affect late-life cognition. We examined CVRFs in adolescence, young adulthood, and midlife with late-life cognition in the Study of Healthy Aging in African Americans (STAR). METHOD: STAR assesses cognitive aging among 764 Black Americans aged ≥50 (mean age = 69; SD = 9; range = 53-95). Participants' body mass index, blood pressure, glucose, and total cholesterol were collected during

Memory for verbal information in individuals with HIV-associated dementia complex. HNRC Group.

Patterns of memory performance were examined for 9 participants with HIV-associated dementia (HAD), 15 HIV-seropositive participants without dementia, and 15 HIV-seronegative controls. Episodic and semantic memory were assessed using the California Verbal Learning Test, the Boston Naming Test, and Verbal Fluency tests. The HAD group showed deficits in episodic memory, with relative sparing of semantic memory. In addition, results suggest a retrieval deficit in HAD rather than a deficit in retention of information. This pattern is consistent with the presence of a subcortical dementing process

Domain-specific cognitive impairment is differentially affected by Alzheimer disease tau pathologic burden and spread.

Tau pathology in Alzheimer disease (AD) is often evaluated in regions associated with episodic memory impairment. However, heterogeneous spreading patterns of tau are observed and correspond to impairment in different cognitive domains. We have previously developed a metric to quantify tau spread extent that is robustly sensitive to atypical spreading patterns. Here, we evaluate tau spread relative to domain-specific and general cognitive impairments during early stages of AD. In total, 529 participants with baseline tau positron emission tomography (PET) and neuropsychological testing were se

Disentangling the effects of age and APOE on neuropathology and late life cognitive decline.

Age and APOE are the most robust risk factors for dementia and cognitive decline, but the underlying neurobiology remains unclear. We examined the extent to which the hallmark pathologies of Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body disease, and cerebrovascular diseases account for the association of age and APOE with decline in episodic memory versus nonepisodic cognitive abilities. Up to 20 waves of longitudinal cognitive data were collected from 858 autopsied participants in 2 ongoing clinical-pathologic cohort studies of aging. Neuropathologic examinations quantified measures of beta amyloid (Aβ) pla

Age-associated memory changes in adults with williams syndrome.

Age-associated changes on measures of episodic and working memory were examined in 15 adults with Williams Syndrome (WS; M age = 48.3 years, SD = 14.7; M IQ = 62.9, SD = 8.5) and their performance was compared to that of 33 adults with mental retardation (MR) with unspecified etiologies (M age = 54.2 years, SD = 8.9; M IQ = 61.7, SD = 6.5). Among the group with WS, older adults were significantly poorer than younger adults on the free recall task, a measure of episodic memory. Although this finding is consistent with normal aging, it occurred at a chronologically early age in adults with WS an

Destination and source memory in Huntington's disease.

Destination memory refers to the recall of the destination of previously relayed information, and source memory refers to the recollection of the origin of received information. We compared both memory systems in Huntington's disease (HD) participants. For this, HD participants and healthy adults had to put 12 items in a black or a white box (destination task), and to extract another 12 items from a blue or a red box (source task). Afterwards, they had to decide in which box each item had previously been deposited (destination memory), and from which box each item had previously been extracted

Concurrent representations of reinstated and transformed memories and their modulation by reward.

An integral part of episodic retrieval is the reinstatement of neural activity that was present in the medial temporal lobe during encoding. However, neural memory representations do not remain static. Consolidation promotes the transformation of representations that are specific to individual episodes toward more generalized representations that reflect commonalities across episodes. Moreover, reward has been shown to augment episodic memory by enhancing consolidation, and it may accelerate the transformation of neural memory representations. We investigated this account with n = 40 human par

Concurrent- and After-Effects of Medial Temporal Lobe Stimulation on Directed Information Flow to and from Prefrontal and Parietal Cortices during Memory Formation.

Electrical stimulation of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) has the potential to uncover causal circuit mechanisms underlying memory function. However, little is known about how MTL stimulation alters information flow with frontoparietal cortical regions implicated in episodic memory. We used intracranial EEG recordings from humans (14 participants, 10 females) to investigate how MTL stimulation alters directed information flow between MTL and PFC and between MTL and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Participants performed a verbal episodic memory task during which they were presented with words a

Semantic memory in developmental amnesia.

Patients with developmental amnesia resulting from bilateral hippocampal atrophy associated with neonatal hypoxia-ischaemia typically show relatively preserved semantic memory and factual knowledge about the natural world despite severe impairments in episodic memory. Understanding the neural and mnemonic processes that enable this context-free semantic knowledge to be acquired throughout development without the support of the contextualised episodic memory system is a serious challenge. This review describes the clinical presentation of patients with developmental amnesia, contrasts its featu

Bilingualism and cognitive aging in ethnically diverse older adults: cross-sectional and longitudinal evidence from Health and Aging Brain Study-Health Disparities.

OBJECTIVES: Identifying modifiable factors that shape cognitive aging trajectories is a central goal in aging research. This study examined whether bilingualism is associated with dementia status and longitudinal cognitive decline, and whether associations vary by ethnicity or gender. METHODS: We analyzed Wave 7 data from the Health and Aging Brain Study-Health Disparities (HABS-HD), a longitudinal U.S. cohort of adults aged ≥50 years. Bilingualism was defined by self-reported use of a second language. Cross-sectional analyses included 4,140 participants (1,013 bilinguals); longitudinal analy

The impaired learning of semantic knowledge following bilateral medial temporal-lobe resection.

The integrity of several aspects of semantic memory (including knowledge of the meaning, lexical status, perception, and pronunciation of words and famous names) was examined in H.M., a patient with anterograde amnesia following bilateral medial temporal-lobe excision. Despite normal memory for such semantic knowledge acquired prior to the onset of his amnesia in 1953, H.M. showed a severe deficit in memory for semantic information encountered subsequently. In combination with the previously reported impairments in new learning shown by H.M., the deficits observed here point to an association

Associations of Blood Pressure Fluctuation Patterns With Cognitive Function: The Mediating Role of Cumulative Blood Pressure.

BACKGROUND: The impact of different fluctuation patterns of blood pressure (BP) on episodic memory remains underexplored, and the role of cumulative BP in this association remains unclear. METHODS: Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, 6563 participants aged 45 years or more were analyzed. BP was measured in wave 1 (2011), wave 2 (2013), and wave 3 (2015). Cumulative systolic BP (SBP) during wave 1-3 (area under the curve) and the SBP difference between wave 1-2 and wave 2-3 were calculated. Then, SBP differences in the two intervals were used to identify pattern

Impairment in cognitive function in patients with axial spondyloarthritis and psoriatic arthritis.

Spondyloarthritis may contribute to deficits in cognition. The objective of this study was to compare cognitive abilities in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) or psoriatic arthritis (PsA) with matched reference groups. This investigator-initiated, cross-sectional, exploratory study of adults with axSpA or PsA was conducted at two German rheumatology centres (November 2018-September 2019). All data on patient and disease characteristics and cognitive abilities were collected at a single visit. Cognitive function was assessed by the previously validated Memory and Attention Test subs
