Maternal mental health disorders and offspring asthma and allergic diseases: The role of child mental health.

BACKGROUND: Maternal psychological stress during pregnancy and postnatally has been shown to be associated with offspring atopic diseases (asthma, atopic dermatitis and allergic rhinitis). The aim of this study was to assess whether this association may be attributable to the child's own mental health disorders. METHOD: The study population included 15,092 twin children born 2002-2010 in Sweden. Questionnaire data at age 9 years was linked to national patient- and prescription registers. Maternal mental health during pregnancy and 3 years postnatally were identified from diagnosis and medicat

Perspectives of Mental Health Nurses About Sexual Safety in Acute Inpatient Mental Health Units.

The overall aim of this study is to explore the views of mental health nurses (MHNs) about the sexual safety of consumers receiving care in acute inpatient units. In Australia, people accessing mental health inpatient units have reported feeling unsafe while receiving care including experiences of sexual harassment and abuse from other patients. There has been no study to date that has explored the views of the MHNs providing care. An explorative descriptive qualitative study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews involving n = 8 MHNs working on a metropolitan acute inpatient

Advancing the Actionability of Mental Health Information: Identifying Online, Evidence-Based Mental Health Resources.

To improve the dissemination and actionability of mental health research, many mental health professionals have developed online informational resources to increase the general public's awareness of mental health difficulties and available treatments. Yet, limited information exists on the quality and scope of these resources. This study aimed to explore the scope and quantity of online, free, evidence-based mental health resources. Fifty-two mental health professionals nominated 178 resources, which predominantly consisted of homepages and links to more information. When reviewing the origina

Epidemiology of common mental disorders: Results from "National Mental Health Survey" of India, 2016.

BACKGROUND: Despite their higher prevalence, the Common Mental Disorders (CMDs) are under-recognized and under-treated resulting in huge disability. India, home to one-fifth of the global population, could offer insights for organizing better services for CMDs. However, the prevalence and resultant disability in the general population is unknown, and consequently, gaps in management or plan for services are enormous, by default overlooked. AIM: Estimating the current prevalence, disability, socioeconomic impact, and treatment gap of CMDs in a nationally representative sample from India. We at

Correlates of Mental Health Treatment Receipt Among Asian Americans with Perceived Mental Health Problems.

Compared with other ethnic groups, Asian Americans report the lowest rates of mental health treatment and service utilization. This is true even among Asian Americans with mental illness, which indicates that the underutilization of mental health services is not due to the low prevalence of mental health disorders in this population. This study examined which sociodemographic factors, types of mental health problems, and barriers to treatment were associated with the treatment receipt among 126 Asian Americans who reported perceived mental health problems. Among sociodemographic factors, Chine

Relations between mental health diagnoses, mental health treatment, and substance use in homeless youth.

BACKGROUND: Youth experiencing homelessness have elevated rates of mental illness and substance use compared to the general population. However, the extent to which underlying mental health issues may contribute to substance use as a way to manage symptoms and whether mental health treatment may reduce risk for substance use is unclear. This paper investigated these relations in a community sample of homeless youth. METHODS: Youth ages 13-24 (N=416) were interviewed as part of a community count and survey of homeless youth in Houston, Texas. A path analysis examined relations among lifetime d

Prison mental health in-reach teams, serious mental illness and the Care Programme Approach in England.

The delivery of prison mental health services in England is examined over the last 12 years. Resources for services have grown significantly during this period and improved organisational models for the delivery of services are now in place. During this period however the challenges of working in the prison environment have increased. The paper argues that a history of sexual abuse or violence are common amongst prisoners and the Care Programme Approach (CPA) provides the vehicle to assess these histories through the use of routine enquiry. Commissioners of prison mental health services now ne

Mental health, burnout and job satisfaction among mental health social workers in England and Wales.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that social workers experience high levels of stress and burnout but most remain committed to their work. AIMS: To examine the prevalence of stress and burnout, and job satisfaction among mental health social workers (MHSWs) and the factors responsible for this. METHOD: A postal survey incorporating the General Health Questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Karasek Job Content Questionnaire and a job satisfaction measure was sent to 610 MHSWs in England and Wales. RESULTS: Eligible respondents (n=237) reported high levels of stress and emotional exha

Homelessness among persons with serious mental illness in an enhanced community-based mental health system.

OBJECTIVE: Homelessness and patterns of service use were examined among seriously mentally ill persons in an area with a well-funded community-based mental health system. METHODS: The sample consisted of 438 individuals referred between 1990 and 1992 to an extended acute care psychiatric hospital after a stay in a general hospital. Those experiencing an episode of homelessness, defined as an admission to a public shelter between 1990 and 1993, were compared with those who were residentially stable. Data from a longitudinal integrated database of public mental health and medical services were

Sleep abnormalities in mentally retarded autistic subjects: Down's syndrome with mental retardation and normal subjects.

We compared sleep parameters in mentally retarded infantile autism (MRIA) and mentally retarded Down's syndrome (MRDS) by means of polysomnography, evaluating traditional analysis with particular attention to the phasic components in each disorder. Data were compared with those obtained in normal subjects matched for age and sex. Mental age, Intellectual Quotient and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale were performed to obtain an estimation of the neuropsychological deficit. Abnormalities of phasic components of sleep and the presence of REM sleep components into non-REM sleep were observed in b

Reliability of a Standardized Mini-Mental State Examination compared with the traditional Mini-Mental State Examination.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the reliability of the Mini-Mental State Examination with that of a new Standardized Mini-Mental State Examination, which has expanded guidelines for administration and scoring. METHOD: The subjects were 32 stable elderly residents of a nursing home and 16 elderly residents of a chronic care hospital unit. Six raters administered the Folstein Mini-Mental State to 22 of these stable elderly subjects, and five raters administered the standardized version to 26 of these subjects. Each subject was tested on three different occasions 1 week apa

Mild mental retardation and severe mental retardation compared: experiences in eight less developed countries.

Frequencies of Severe Mental Retardation (SMR) and Mild Mental Retardation (MMR) were obtained from pilot surveys of severe childhood disability in 8 less developed countries. Approximately 1,000 children aged 3 to 9 years were surveyed in each location. The surveys used a Ten Question (TQ) door-to-door interview, usually of the mother, as a screening procedure and a systematic medical and psychological assessment for the diagnosis. Diagnostic categories of SMR (IQ less than or equal to 55) and MMR (IQ greater than 55, less than or equal to 70) were assigned by well trained local psychologists

The choroid plexus and system disease in mental illness. III. The exogenous peptide hypothesis of mental illness.

Based on the apparent existence of a second (choroid plexial) blood-brain barrier offering a new brain attack mechanism on the periventricular primary personality brain (Rudin, 1980) and which may be breached to produce the schizophreniform psychosis characteristic of systemic lupus erythematosus (Rudin, 1981), we here assess the evidence that viruses and exogenous peptides, including especially the glutens of cereal grains, may be the primary triggers for schizophrenia. Schizophrenia would then be supposed to result as one expression of gene-determined combined transport organ dysfunction wit

Mental health of those directly exposed to the World Trade Center disaster: unmet mental health care need, mental health treatment service use, and quality of life.

Mental health service utilization several years following a man-made or natural disaster can be lower than expected, despite a high prevalence of mental health disorders among those exposed. This study focused on factors associated with subjective unmet mental health care need (UMHCN) and its relationship to a combination of diagnostic history and current mental health symptoms, 5-6 years after the 9-11-01 World Trade Center (WTC) disaster in New York City, USA. Two survey waves of the WTC Health Registry, after exclusions, provided a sample of 36,625 enrollees for this analysis. Important dif

A meta-analysis of mentalizing in anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, and trauma and stressor related disorders.

BACKGROUND: The number of studies that have researched the ability to mentalize in individuals with anxiety and related disorders is limited. Often, no distinction is made between different anxiety and related disorders in the examination of mentalization. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to obtain insight into mentalization in anxiety and related disorders, and to compare this ability between these disorders. METHOD: A systematic literature search was performed to identify studies in which performance on a mentalization task was compared between a patient group diagnosed with an anxiet…

Age-associated differences in mentalizing error profiles in schizophrenia: Evidence for a dissociation between hypo- and hyper-mentalizing.

BACKGROUND: Theory of mind (ToM) impairments are a core feature of schizophrenia and are strongly associated with functional outcomes. However, ToM is often treated as a unitary construct, potentially obscuring distinct patterns of mentalizing errors. This study examined whether age is differentially associated with hyper- and hypo-mentalizing in schizophrenia. METHODS: ToM was assessed in 177 individuals with schizophrenia and 142 healthy controls using the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC). Generalized linear models examined age, diagnosis, and their interaction on total T
