Finding the hidden foundation of change: The legacy of Dr. Charles Gelso.

This article describes the author's perceptions of the value and legacy of Charles Gelso's ("Charlie's") work and his contributions to the field of psychotherapy research, practice, and training. Charlie's major theoretical and empirical contributions on the therapy relationship, most notably the tripartite model and the real relationship, and the research-training environment are discussed, alongside personal reflections of Charlie as a mentor. Lessons learned and suggestions for carrying his legacy forward, as we continue to advance psychotherapy research, practice, and training, are suggest

The effect of catchment based mentorship on quality of maternal and newborn care in primary health care facilities in Tigray Region, Northern Ethiopia: A controlled quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, quality of maternal and newborn care is poor. This situation has persisted, despite the wide implementation of several capacity building-oriented interventions including clinical mentoring for skilled birth attendants that were anticipated to translate in to high-quality maternal and newborn care on each encounter. The effectiveness of mentoring programs is not yet well documented in the research literature. Therefore, we evaluated the effect of a catchment based clinical mentorship in improving the quality of maternal and newborn care in primary level facilities of Ti…

BACKGROUND: In 2015, the child mortality rate in Laos was 53.6 per 1,000 live births. The Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) in Luang Prabang was established to enhance access to specialized pediatric care. To support workforce development, a Pediatric Nursing Training Program was implemented. However, the program has not undergone a formal evaluation since its inception. This study aims to evaluate the program's first five years. STUDY DESIGN: The evaluation included a review of curriculum documents via an online platform and feedback collection through an online survey administered to

Partnership between cystic fibrosis centres in Europe: The Twinning Project.

Significant disparities in cystic fibrosis (CF) care persist across Europe. To address these inequalities, the European CF Society (ECFS) has launched the Twinning Project in collaboration with CF Europe. The project promotes structured partnerships between well-established and developing CF centres. Mentor centres from the ECFS Clinical Trials Network (ECFS-CTN) are paired with mentee centres, primarily from Eastern European countries, with the aim of strengthening CF care. Launched in 2020 with eight partnerships, the programme has grown in 2024 to encompass an additional 19 twinning pairs a

Development and Implementation of a Minority Health International Infectious Diseases Research Training Program.

From 2014-2019, the University of Hawai'i (UH) at Manoa offered a National Institutes of Health funded Minority Health International Research Training (MHIRT) Program for undergraduate research experiences in infectious diseases. The goal of the program was to immerse undergraduate students in conducting global infectious diseases research to train a new generation of scientists to combat future global pandemics. The MHIRT program trained educationally underrepresented groups unique in Hawai'i: Native Hawai'ians and other Pacific Islanders, and underrepresented Asian Americans, e.g., Filipinos

Efforts to improve the surgical outcome for exotropia and investigation of the insertion locations of the extraocular muscles.

In our previous retrospective study, we found that using the strabismus surgery dosages established by western strabismus mentors tends to result in undercorrection of Taiwanese exotropia (XT) patients compared with those in western populations. We also discovered that the location of extraocular muscle (EOM) insertion could vary by ethnicity. In this study, using a generalized estimation equation model, we compared the XT surgery outcome between augmented and original strabismus surgery dosages in Taiwanese patients. We also conducted an observational study to investigate the horizontal EOM i

Endoscope-assisted rhinoplasty: enhancing precision or extending procedure duration?

OBJECTIVE: The endoscope in rhinology surgeries is a modern tool that can provide significant benefits. By offering a better view of intranasal pathologies, it can assist in diagnosing and treating them more conveniently. In particular, in cases where minimal nasal invasion is required, endoscope assistance can be especially beneficial during short and comfortable periods of rhinoplasty surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients who underwent endoscope-assisted rhinoplasty were enrolled in this study. Four parameters were retrospectively evaluated: patients, endoscope, mentor-mentees,

Red Flags in the Living Kidney Donor Process.

BACKGROUND: Ideally, no live kidney donor should regret their decision or feel they were not fully prepared for the process. Unfortunately, this is not a reality for all donors. The aim of our study is to identify areas for improvement, focusing on factors (red flags) that predict less favorable outcomes from a donor perspective. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 171 living kidney donors responded to a questionnaire with 24 multiple-choice questions and space for comments. Less favorable outcomes were defined as lower satisfaction, extended physical recovery period, long-term fatigue, and lon

Reducing distress in mothers of children with autism and other disabilities: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Compared with other parents, mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder or other neurodevelopmental disabilities experience more stress, illness, and psychiatric problems. Although the cumulative stress and disease burden of these mothers is exceptionally high, and associated with poorer outcomes in children, policies and practices primarily serve the identified child with disabilities. METHODS: A total of 243 mothers of children with disabilities were consented and randomized into either Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (mindfulness practice) or Positive Adult Developmen

From the Individual to the Ecosystem: An Institutional Framework for the Career Sustainability of Early-Career Health Professions Faculty.

The career sustainability of early-career faculty in the health professions is often framed as a matter of individual resilience, a perspective that obscures institutional determinants of ill-being and attrition. We argue that retention and thriving depend on an institutional ecosystem that integrates structured mentoring, psychopedagogical support and formal recognition of faculty work. Drawing on recent evidence on burnout, resilience and career development in academic medicine, we propose the Health Professions Faculty Career Sustainability Institutional Ecosystem (EISCD-Health) and the Fac…

Falls in residential carpentry and drywall installation: findings from active injury surveillance with union carpenters.

Active injury surveillance was conducted with a large, unionized workforce of residential and drywall carpenters over a 3-year period. Injured carpenters were interviewed by trained carpenter investigators and sites were visited where falls occurred. Qualitative information was collected on exposures, risk perception, training, and mentoring. Falls accounted for 20% of injuries. Same-level falls were often related to weather, carrying objects-sometimes with an obstructed view-housekeeping, terrain of the lot, and speed of work. Falls from height occurred from a variety of work surfaces and inv…

The effects of mentorship and educational videos on nursing students' physical examination skills: a clinical audit.

BACKGROUND: Poor competence in clinical examination skills among nurses has been reported in practice, and there is a strong consensus that physical examination (PE) education must be improved. However, deficiencies cannot be resolved by theoretical training alone, and new training approaches are required to enable nursing students to perform PE accurately. This study aimed to determine and compare the effect of two new educational methods (mentorship and educational video methods) on the physical examination skills of Iranian nursing students. METHODS: This study was a clinical audit with th

Digital Diabetes Health Coaching for Adults With Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Recent advancements in digital health have enabled the development of technology-enhanced diabetes coaching programs that offer personalized, data-driven, and adaptive support. However, evidence on their implementation and impact is scattered and has not been comprehensively synthesized. Although numerous studies have informed intervention development using different theories and models, the diversity of these approaches creates a significant challenge in developing an evidence-based intervention that is adaptable and effective across different population groups.
