Dimethylmercury in coastal upwelling waters, Monterey Bay, California.

Depth profiles of dimethylmercury (DMHg) concentration were determined at nearshore to offshore sites in Monterey Bay, California. The onset of spring upwelling in the bay was accompanied by increases in DMHg concentrations. Profiles show DMHg increasing gradually with depth in fall and winter from <0.03 pM at the surface to 0.5 pM at 200 m. During the spring, DMHg concentrations increased between 30 and 100 m, first within Monterey Bay, then offshore. This change was accompanied by an increase in DMHg concentrations in the surface water DMHg between fall/winter (<0.03 pM) and spring (0.06-0.2

Multiyear total and methyl mercury exports from two major sub-Arctic rivers draining into Hudson Bay, Canada.

From 2003 to 2007, concentrations of total mercury and methylmercury (THg and MeHg) were continuously measured in two Canadian sub-Arctic rivers (the Nelson and the Churchill) that drain into western Hudson Bay. THg and MeHg concentrations were low in the Nelson River (mean i standard deviation, 0.88 +/- 0.33 and 0.05 +/- 0.03 ng L(-1), respectively). The Churchill River, however, had high concentrations of Hg, particularly MeHg (1.96 +/- 0.8 and 0.18 +/- 0.09 ng L(-1), respectively) and hence may be an important source of MeHg to organisms feeding in the Churchill River estuary. A large porti

Distribution characteristics of total mercury and methylmercury in the topsoil and dust of Xiamen, China.

The levels and distribution of mercury (Hg) species, including total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in the topsoil and dust collected from twenty sampling stations located in different land function areas of Xiamen, China, were investigated. The THg concentrations in topsoil ranged from 0.071 to 1.2 mg/kg, and in dust ranged from of 0.034 to 1.4 mg/kg. For stations where the THg of dust was less than 0.31 mg/kg, THg concentrations in the topsoil were significantly correlated to those in the corresponding dust (r = 0.597, n = 16, P = 0.014). The MeHg concentrations in topsoil were varie

Methylmercury production in the water column of an ultraoligotrophic lake of Northern Patagonia, Argentina.

Methyl-mercury (CH3Hg+) production was studied in freshwaters from lake Moreno, an ultraoligotrophic system belonging to Northern Patagonia. Hg2+ labelled with high specific activity 197Hg was spiked to water samples in concentrations of 10 ng l(-1), and incubated in laboratory for 3d time trends under different conditions. Experimental water was sampled daily to evaluate CH3(197)Hg+ production. Lake water used in the experiments was sampled just below the upper limit of the metalimnion ( approximately 30 m depth), where maximum values of chlorophyll a have been measured previously. Sampling w

Total and methyl mercury in wetland soils and sediments of Louisiana's Pontchartrain Basin (USA).

Accumulation of methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic biota is a primary toxicological concern associated with Hg contamination in the environment. This study reports total mercury (THg) and MeHg measurements in 11 swamp and 24 marsh soils/sediments in wetlands surrounding Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas located in Louisiana's Pontchartrain Basin. The salinity level ranged from fresh, brackish to salt water. Average THg content in the swamp soils/sediments (112.3 microg kg(-1), n = 10) was significantly higher (P = 0.04) than in the marsh soils/sediments (56.5 microg kg(-1), n = 24). The THg co

Meeting report: Methylmercury in marine ecosystems--from sources to seafood consumers.

Mercury and other contaminants in coastal and open-ocean ecosystems are an issue of great concern globally and in the United States, where consumption of marine fish and shellfish is a major route of human exposure to methylmercury (MeHg). A recent National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences-Superfund Basic Research Program workshop titled "Fate and Bioavailability of Mercury in Aquatic Ecosystems and Effects on Human Exposure," convened by the Dartmouth Toxic Metals Research Program on 15-16 November 2006 in Durham, New Hampshire, brought together human health experts, marine scientis

Mercury and methylmercury accumulation and excretion in prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) receiving chronic doses of methylmercury.

Methylmercury cation (MeHg) and divalent mercury (Hg++) accumulation in liver, kidney, and brain were quantified in prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) at 0, 3, 6, and 12 weeks during chronic exposure to aqueous MeHg. Dose groups received deionized water or aqueous solutions containing 9, 103, or 920 ng MeHg/ml. Our study presents temporal patterns of Hg++ and MeHg concentrations in organ tissues and makes inter-tissue comparisons at each time point to illustrate the accumulation and distribution of Hg species during the study. MeHg was accumulated in tissues for 3 weeks and then concentratio

The biological monitoring of prenatal exposure to methylmercury.

Several biological media have been used as indicators of the fetal body burden of methylmercury and the levels in the primary target tissue, the developing brain. These media include maternal hair and blood. The relative merits of these media will be considered both with regard to current knowledge of the physiology of mercury disposition in the body and also the practicality of field application with respect to sample, collection, transport, storage and processing.

Factors affecting the toxicity of methylmercury injected into eggs.

We developed a standardized protocol for comparing the sensitivities of the embryos of different bird species to methylmercury when methylmercury was injected into their eggs. During the course of developing this protocol, we investigated the effects of various factors on the toxicity of the injected methylmercury. Most of our experiments were done with chicken (Gallus domesticus), mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), and ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) eggs, all of which were purchased in large numbers from game farms. A smaller amount of work was done with double-crested cormorant (Phala

Reproductive and transgenerational effects of methylmercury or Aroclor 1268 on Fundulus heteroclitus.

This research determined the potential for methylmercury or Aroclor 1268 to disrupt reproduction and sexual differentiation in Fundulus heteroclitus. The research determined whether fish that are exposed to mercury or Aroclor 1268 survive and successfully reproduce; whether offspring of exposed fish hatch, survive, produce eggs, and fertilize them; and whether the second-generation offspring of exposed fish hatch and survive. Fundulus heteroclitus were exposed to mercury or Aroclor 1268 via contaminated food. Endpoints evaluated included survival, growth, fecundity, fertilization success, hatc

Excretion of methyl mercury in human feces.

Fecal excretion of methyl mercury was confirmed in four Japanese male subjects. Perhaps the methyl mercury detected in feces is dependent on (a) the unabsorbed methyl mercury in diet, (b) exfoliation of intestinal cells, (c) hepatic bile, and (d) intestinal methylation of inorganic mercury. The calculated amounts of methyl mercury excreted daily in feces were similar to those found in urine.

Mercury mine drainage and processes that control its environmental impact.

Mine drainage from mercury mines in the California Coast Range mercury mineral belt is an environmental concern because of its acidity and high sulfate, mercury, and methylmercury concentrations. Two types of mercury deposits are present in the mineral belt, silica-carbonate and hot-spring type. Mine drainage is associated with both deposit types but more commonly with the silica-carbonate type because of the extensive underground workings present at these mines. Mercury ores consisting primarily of cinnabar were processed in rotary furnaces and retorts and elemental mercury recovered from con

The discovery of the causal agent of Minamata disease.

After the outbreak of an epidemic of a strange disease characterized by severe neurological signs in the small Japanese town of Minamata, a number of scientists in different disciplines were required to identify the causal agent. An account is given of the three-year program, with its disappointments and frustrations as a result of the limitations of knowledge of ecological principles and the absence of adequate techniques for detection and measurement. The lessons that have been learned on how toxic compounds can accumulate and concentrate in food chains are described as are the ecological co

Genotoxic activity of methyl mercury chloride and dimethyl mercury in human lymphocytes.

The genotoxicity of methyl mercury chloride (MMC, 0-25 x 10(-6) M) and dimethyl mercury (DMM, 0-434 x 10(-6) M) was evaluated by chromosome metaphase analysis in human lymphocytes treated in vitro for 24 h. Structural (CA) and numerical (AN) chromosomal aberrations were scored for the assessment of induced genotoxic effects, while the variation in mitotic index (MI) was considered a monitor for induced cellular toxicity. MMC induced CA and AN in a dose-related manner at doses exceeding 0.6 x 10(-6) M, and the proportion of cells with CA was constantly and significantly higher than that of cell

Pharmacokinetics of methylmercury in the blood of monkeys (Macaca fascicularis).

Statistical analysis of the blood mercury profiles of groups of two and four adult female cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) given single oral doses of 500 micrograms and 50 microCi (25.3 micrograms) methylmercury/kg body wt, respectively, indicates that a two-compartment model best describes the absorption and elimination of methylmercury in blood. Absorption was largely complete within 6 hr, and the half-time of methylmercury during the terminal elimination phase ranged from 10 to 15 days. In addition, three groups of five adult female cynomolgus monkeys were dosed with methylmercury e

Possible methylation of inorganic mercury by silicones in the environment.

Organosiloxanes (silicones) are being released to the environment in increasing quantities, and there are questions concerning the reactivity of silicones as methylating agents under environmental conditions. Specifically, the interaction of inorganic mercury and polydimethylsiloxanes, and other silicones, to give methylmercury is important in this content. To this end a series of laboratory experiments, in which inorganic mercury, short and long chain silicones, cyclic siloxanes, oxidized silicone gums, and industrial formulations containing silicones, were conducted. In all cases, there was
