Efficacy of abamectin against ectoparasites of cattle.

Four trials, using 48 European breed cattle, were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of abamectin against the louse species Linognathus vituli, Haematopinus eurysternus and Damalinia bovis and against the mange mites Sarcoptes scabiei var bovis and Psoroptes ovis. Animals were allocated by restricted randomisation based on parasite counts to treatment with abamectin at a dose of 200 micrograms/kg given subcutaneously or to an untreated control group. Ectoparasites were counted before treatment and at weekly intervals thereafter for eight weeks. L. vituli, H eurysternus and S scabiei var bovis

The Itchy Truth About Scabies: A Case of Asymptomatic Carrier Transmission and Treatment Failure.

Scabies, a common and highly contagious skin infestation, is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. Identifying individuals with scabies often poses a diagnostic challenge, as its clinical features resemble other dermatologic conditions such as drug reactions, atopic dermatitis, and contact dermatitis. Furthermore, the cutaneous manifestations arise from delayed-type immunologic reactions to the mites and their byproducts, allowing some individuals to carry the mite without showing symptoms. The significant transmissibility of scabies, along with the potential for asymptomatic carr

Scabies presenting as cutaneous nodules or malar erythema: reports of patients with scabies surrepticius masquerading as prurigo nodularis or systemic lupus erythematosus.

Scabies surrepticius is a unifying term that represents non-classical presentations of scabies mite infestation. A patient with scabies surrepticius is described: a man with scabies masquerading as prurigo nodularis. The 91-year-old man had metastatic prostate cancer and presented with diffuse pruritic nodules. Prurigo nodularis was suspected; however, the biopsy revealed scabies mites in the stratum corneum. He was successfully treated with topical permethrin 5% cream and oral ivermectin. In addition, the features of a woman with scabies mimicking systemic lupus erythematosus are summarized.

Better detection of Demodex mites by Löffler's alkaline methylene blue staining in patients with blepharitis.

PURPOSE: To determine whether the Löffler's alkaline methylene blue staining method is better than no staining in detecting Demodex mites in the eyelashes of patients with blepharitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eyelashes were collected from 22 patients with blepharitis. The mean age of the patients was 82.5±6.2 years (± SD) with a range from 71 to 93 years. Eyelashes were epilated by forceps and placed individually on microscope slides. The number of Demodex mites was determined by conventional optical microscopy before and immediately after the addition of the methylene blue staining solution.

Treatment and control of ectoparasites in sheep.

Ectoparasites are a major concern in sheep flocks, wherever sheep are kept. Techniques to control and eradicate lice, ked, or scab have been available since the beginning of the 20th century, but the parasites still exist. Sheep scab (Psoroptes ovis) was eradicated from Australia in the late 1800s, before many of the more effective chemicals were available, and sheep ked is believed to also have been eradicated. Sheep scab has also been eradicated from North America. This article provides an overview of the common ectoparasites of sheep, effective products to control these parasites, and manag

Population Growth of Varroa destructor (Acari: Varroidae) in Colonies of Russian and Unselected Honey Bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Stocks as Related to Numbers of Foragers With Mites.

Varroa (Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman) is an external parasite of honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) and a leading cause of colony losses worldwide. Varroa populations can be controlled with miticides, but mite-resistant stocks such as the Russian honey bee (RHB) also are available. Russian honey bee and other mite-resistant stocks limit Varroa population growth by affecting factors that contribute to mite reproduction. However, mite population growth is not entirely due to reproduction. Numbers of foragers with mites (FWM) entering and leaving hives also affect the growth of mite populat

Demodex gatoi-associated contagious pruritic dermatosis in cats--a report from six households in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Demodex gatoi is unique among demodectic mites. It possesses a distinct stubby appearance, and, instead of residing in the hair follicles, it dwells in the keratin layer of the epidermis, causing a pruritic and contagious skin disease in cats. Little is known of the occurrence of D. gatoi in Europe or control of D. gatoi infestation. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe D. gatoi in 10 cats, including five Cornish Rex, two Burmese, one Exotic, one Persian and one Siamese, living in six multi-cat households in different locations in Finland containing 21 cats in total. Intense pruritus wa

Scabies Itch.

Itch is the cardinal symptom of scabies, present in more than 90% of the cases, generalized and intense, worsening at night, and often sparing the head. The primary complications of the itch in scabies are secondary bacterial infections and psychosocial issues leading to impairment on life quality. Currently, there are no specific data analyzing mechanisms of the itch in scabies, but the latest progress made in the understanding of host-mite interactions may help to improve understanding. Management of itch in scabies consists primarily of the treatment of the mite infestation, but sometimes t

Sonographic findings in scabies.

Scabies is a cutaneous infestation caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, a small mite that performs its whole life cycle within the epidermis. In this case report, we provide images of the sonographic signs of scabies. We found that the adult mite can be seen as a hyperechoic well-defined ovoid area within the epidermal layer at the end of the hypoechoic burrow, while the eggs correspond to tiny heteroechoic dots along the burrow. In conclusion, ultrasound may prove useful to differentiate between inhabited vs non-inhabited scabiotic burrows.

Timing matters: Seasonal variations in the efficacy of formic acid treatments against the honey bee parasites Tropilaelaps mercedesae and Varroa destructor in the Caucasus.

The recent spread of Tropilaelaps mercedesae into previously mite free regions has created an urgent need for effective control measures. This study evaluated the "within brood cell efficacy" of two formic acid based treatments, Formic Pro® and Muraviinka®, against T. mercedesae and Varroa destructor in western Georgia, a humid subtropical region where colonies were managed under Western beekeeping practices and exposed to late summer and autumn conditions relevant to many temperate apicultural systems. Field trials were conducted in August and October 2025 using Apis mellifera colonies in sin

Fainalges irritans sp. nov. (Astigmata: Xolalgidae), a new feather mite species causing deplumation in red-and-green macaws Ara chloropterus Gray (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae) in Brazil, with a key to species of Fainalges Gaud & Berla, 1963.

Feather mites (Acariformes: Astigmata) are commonly regarded as harmless ectosymbionts of birds. In some cases, however, they may cause pathological conditions in their hosts. A new species of feather mite, Fainalges irritans sp. nov., is described from green-and-red macaws, Ara chloropterus Gray (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae) in Brazil, where it is associated with skin irritation and feather loss. An updated key to males and females of the genus Fainalges Gaud & Berla, 1963 is provided, and previous records of feather mites causing injuries in birds are briefly discussed.

Demodex and the eye - A review.

Demodexblepharitis (DB) has become one of the common differential diagnoses in patients presenting with red eyes in daily clinics. In this review article, we have incorporated a detailed discussion about the mite and the various mechanisms by which it causes different signs and symptoms, the risk factors, and diagnostic methods with current and emerging treatment modalities. Because of the chronic symptoms and rather a late diagnosis, DB considerably affects patients' quality of life. The clues to identify cylindrical dandruff, the diagnostic sign of Demodex, visualization of the mite correlat

Rosacea, an infectious disease: why rosacea with papulopustules should be considered a demodicosis. A narrative review.

Rosacea and demodicosis are common facial conditions in dermatology practice. While demodicosis is clearly the result of Demodex mite infestation, the pathogenicity of rosacea is still not sufficiently explained, so that it is defined by its symptoms, and not by its cause. It is usually considered as a disease of the immune system associated with neurogenic inflammation triggered by various factors (ultraviolet light, heat, spicy food, alcohol, stress and microorganisms). Its links with demodicosis remain controversial, although there is increasing evidence that Demodex mites may play a key ro

Attractant Activity of Host-Related Chemical Blends on the Poultry Red Mite at Different Spatial Scales.

Many blood-feeding arthropods use volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to detect their vertebrate hosts. The role of chemical interactions in mediating the behavior of hematophagous insects and ticks has been investigated before but remains poorly understood in hematophagous mesostigmatic mites. The poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae is an obligatory blood-sucking mesostigmatic mite that feeds on birds and causes damage in poultry farms. We characterized the attractive response of D. gallinae to candidate VOCs previously reported from the odor emitted by living hens. We performed in-vitro choi

Transcriptomic analysis of the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, across all stages of the lifecycle.

BACKGROUND: The blood feeding poultry red mite (PRM), Dermanyssus gallinae, causes substantial economic damage to the egg laying industry worldwide, and is a serious welfare concern for laying hens and poultry house workers. In this study we have investigated the temporal gene expression across the 6 stages/sexes (egg, larvae, protonymph and deutonymph, adult male and adult female) of this neglected parasite in order to understand the temporal expression associated with development, parasitic lifestyle, reproduction and allergen expression. RESULTS: RNA-seq transcript data for the 6 stages we

[DEMODEX PARASITES AND CHRONIC BLEPHARITIS].

In the current issue of 'Harefuah', Livny et al present an article on the prevalence of Demodex parasites in patients with chronic blepharitis and healthy controls in Israel. This prospective case controlled study describes the quantitative connection between the number of parasites found on 6-8 sample eyelashes and chronic blepharitis, one of the most prevalent conditions in the general population and especially prevalent in the ophthalmologist office visits. Blepharitis symptoms may vary from being asymptomatic, chronic condition, dry eye, and sometimes even a severe compromise of ocular sur

Demodex castoris sp. nov. (Acari: Demodecidae) parasitizing Castor fiber (Rodentia), and other parasitic arthropods associated with Castor spp.

A new species of demodecid mite, Demodex castoris sp. nov. (Acari: Prostigmata: Demodecidae), is described based on adult stages from the skin of the nasal region of the Eurasian beaver Castor fiber Linnaeus, 1758, collected in Poland. This is the first detection of a representative demodecid mite in rodents of the suborder Castorimorpha and also represents the first detection of a skin mite in Eurasian beavers. The new species is a small skin mite (average 173 µm in length) characterized by sexual dimorphism related to body proportions. D. castoris sp. nov. was observed in 4 out of 6 beavers
