Gait speed as a measure in geriatric assessment in clinical settings: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Gait speed is a quick, inexpensive, reliable measure of functional capacity with well-documented predictive value for major health-related outcomes. Numerous epidemiological studies have documented gait speed in healthy, community-dwelling older people. The purpose of this study is to undertake a systematic review and meta-analysis of gait speed in a specific group with mobility limitations-geriatric patients in clinical settings. METHODS: Relevant databases were searched systematically for original research articles published in February 2011 measuring gait speed in persons aged …

Mobility in older adults: a comprehensive framework.

Mobility is fundamental to active aging and is intimately linked to health status and quality of life. Although there is widespread acceptance regarding the importance of mobility in older adults, there have been few attempts to comprehensively portray mobility, and research has to a large extent been discipline specific. In this article, a new theoretical framework for mobility is presented with the goals of raising awareness of the complexity of factors that influence mobility and stimulating new integrative and interdisciplinary research ideas. Mobility is broadly defined as the ability to

The burden of prolonged sedentary behavior imposed by uberization.

Mobility applications are rapidly growing in cities worldwide due to their convenience and low cost. Mobility applications drivers experience vast flexibility in work hours, often work longer than in fixed-hours jobs, and can constantly transport passengers in their vehicles for up to 12 h; after this, they must go offline for eight consecutive hours before driving again. Nonetheless, drivers have found an easy way around this limitation by switching to other apps and continuing driving. This burden of prolonged work can increase sedentary behavior among mobility applications drivers. Sedentar

A multimodal and multidisciplinary program to prevent loss of mobility in patients aged over 70 years: study protocol of a multicenter cluster randomized study in primary care (the PRISME-3P study).

BACKGROUND: Reduced mobility is the first sign of functional decline and can lead to dependency in elderly people. Screening for the risk of mobility limitation in this population is an important public health issue to prevent further disabilities. Despite the current lack of guidelines, primary care healthcare providers may have a central role to play in this type of screening. Multi-domain physical exercise interventions in older persons have shown some efficacy/effectiveness on frailty status, yet, to the best of our knowledge, no published study has focused on patients screened in primary …

Observation of Schlemm's canal and transluminal trabeculotomy using an ophthalmic endoscope: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculectomy is a novel and useful technique for ab interno trabeculotomy. However, gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculectomy is difficult to perform in patients with corneal opacity or in patients with sequelae of cerebral infarction and cervical osteoarthritis with severe limitation of spinal mobility. This is because observing Schlemm's canal during surgery using gonioscopy is difficult. In this report, we introduce a new and beneficial surgical technique of transluminal trabeculotomy for these patients, using an ophthalmic endoscope for

To what extent are the characteristics of painful temporomandibular disorders predictors of self-reported limitations in jaw function?

OBJECTIVE: The study evaluated the extent to which the source, intensity, and duration of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain are predictors of limitations in jaw function. METHODS: The sample included 166 subjects (12-69 years) who self-administered the Jaw Function Limitation Scale (JFLS) and underwent clinical examinations. RESULTS: In univariate correlations, global limitation (long-form JFLS) as well as mastication, mobility, and communication had the highest correlation with headache attributed to TMD (r = 0.362-0.415; p < 0.001). Correlation was higher for pain intensity than chroni

110 GHz CMOS compatible thin film LiNbO3 modulator on silicon.

In this paper we address a significant limitation of silicon as an optical material, namely, the upper bound of its potential modulation frequency. This arises due to finite carrier mobility, which fundamentally limits the frequency response of all-silicon modulators to about 60 GHz. To overcome this limitation, another material must be integrated with silicon to provide increased operational bandwidths. Accordingly, this paper proposes and demonstrates the integration of a thin LiNbO3 device layer with silicon and a novel tuning process that matches the propagation velocities between the prop
