Associations between psychological distress and thyroid cancer, and the mediating role of lifestyle and metabolism: a cohort study from the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress increases cancer risk, but its relationship to thyroid cancer risk remains unclear. The aims of our study were to assess whether psychological distress increases the risk of thyroid cancer, and to further explore the mediating factors between psychological distress and thyroid cancer. METHODS: A total of 420,187 participants aged 39-73 years between 2006 and 2010 in the UK biobank were included in the cohort study. Psychological distress was assessed using relevant hospitalization records, the four-item Patient Health Questionnaire and self-reported psychiat

A quantitative and qualitative analysis of non-participation in cardiac rehabilitation: The role of psychological burden and experienced barriers.

BACKGROUND: Participation in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) remains low. The cumulative role of psychological factors in non-participation is insufficiently understood. Conceptual and mechanistic overlap suggests an accumulation of dysregulated psychobiological domains, which may result in an exposure-response relation with CR non-participation. The current study investigated the presence of such relationship between psychological burden and CR non-participation. Patient-reported reasons for non-participation were also investigated. METHODS: Data from 1600 participants (Mage = 64.9 ± 9.6 years,

Multiple chronic diseases and psychological distress among adults in the United States: the intersectionality of chronic diseases, race/ethnicity, immigration, sex, and insurance coverage.

PURPOSE: Psychological distress significantly contributes to the burdens of morbidity and mortality in the United States (U.S.), but our understanding is limited with regards to the risk factors associated with psychological distress. We used nationally representative data to examine (1) the comorbidities of chronic diseases and their risks for psychological distress and (2) the ways in which chronic diseases combine with demographic factors such as sex, race/ethnicity, immigration status, and health insurance coverage to affect the patterning of psychological distress. METHODS: We analyzed t

Associations of General and Multiracial-Specific Discrimination with Psychological Distress and Substance Use in Multiracial College Students.

OBJECTIVES: Multiracial (alternatively, mixed-race or biracial) college students report higher rates of alcohol/substance use than their monoracial peers, yet factors associated with this disparity remain understudied. Guided by minority stress and tension-reduction frameworks, associations of general and Multiracial discrimination experiences with psychological distress and substance use were investigated. METHODS: Cross-sectional data obtained from a convenience sample of 193 Multiracial college students (Mage=20.34 [SD = 1.32], 30% Male, 31% fraternity/sorority affiliation) were used. Mult

Associations between psychological therapy outcomes for depression and incidence of dementia.

BACKGROUND: Depression is an important, potentially modifiable dementia risk factor. However, it is not known whether effective treatment of depression through psychological therapies is associated with reduced dementia incidence. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between reduction in depressive symptoms following psychological therapy and the subsequent incidence of dementia. METHODS: National psychological therapy data were linked with hospital records of dementia diagnosis for 119808 people aged 65+. Participants received a course of psychological therapy treatment in I

Sex- and Gender-Stratified Risks of Psychological Factors for Incident Ischemic Heart Disease: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background Psychological factors are associated with an increased risk of developing ischemic heart disease ( IHD ). Women more often report psychological factors, and sex and gender differences are present in IHD . In this meta-analysis we examine the risks of psychological factors for IHD incidence in women and men. We hypothesize that a broad range of psychological factors are related to a higher risk for incident IHD , with a higher risk for women. Methods and Results PubMed, EMBASE , and Psyc INFO were searched for studies assessing the risk between psychological factors and incident IHD

Optimism predicts positive health in repatriated prisoners of war.

"Positive health," defined as a state beyond the mere absence of disease, was used as a model to examine factors for enhancing health despite extreme trauma. The study examined the United States' longest detained American prisoners of war, those held in Vietnam in the 1960s through early 1970s. Positive health was measured using a physical and a psychological composite score for each individual, based on 9 physical and 9 psychological variables. Physical and psychological health was correlated with optimism obtained postrepatriation (circa 1973). Linear regressions were employed to determine w

Structure and function in neurobiology: a conceptual framework and the localization of functions.

A framework of concepts on structure and function of the nervous system is presented, in which we attempt to formulate the intended meanings of some ambiguous statements on structure and function in neurobiology in a set of strictly defined concepts. Function. The word "function" as generally used has different meanings. Two meanings of the question "What is the function of B?" are particularly relevant for this subject: (1) "What does B do?" and (2) "Why did B evolve?" It is shown that question 1 must be answered before question 2. Function of brain region S. The question "What does brain reg

Stressful life events in childhood and adulthood and risk of physical, psychological and cognitive multimorbidities: a multicohort study.

BACKGROUND: Stressful life events, such as financial hardship, and death of own child, have been associated with various adverse health outcomes, but their impacts on complex multimorbidities remain unknown. This study examined the association between stressful life events in childhood and adulthood and later-life physical, psychological and cognitive multimorbidities. METHODS: We harmonised and pooled longitudinal data from three nationally representative cohort studies from the Program on Global Ageing, Health and Policy: the US Health and Retirement Study (HRS), the English Longitudinal St

Augmented reality-based fine arts education experiences and adolescents' perceived reduction in depressive symptoms: a self-report study of associations with psychological resilience, rumination, and emotional regulation.

As depressive symptoms among adolescents continue to rise, increasing attention has been directed toward educational contexts that may support psychological well-being. Augmented reality, characterized by immersive, interactive, and multisensory affordances, has been increasingly incorporated into fine arts education. However, it remains insufficiently understood how adolescents' perceived AR-based fine arts education experiences are associated with psychological resilience, emotional regulation, perceived reduction in rumination, and perceived reduction in depressive symptoms. Using post-cour

Impact of Comorbid Psychological Distress on Stimulant Use Disorder Treatment Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress is common among individuals with stimulant use disorder (StUD) and may affect treatment outcomes, with potential differences in men and women. We examined the impact of comorbid psychological distress on StUD treatment outcomes across behavioral interventions, with a focus on differences by sex. METHODS: Data were pooled from 4 randomized controlled trials of behavioral interventions (eg, motivational interviewing, 12-step, and smoking-cessation) for StUD (n = 1858) from the National Institute on Drug Abuse Data Share. Psychological distress was assessed usi

Maternal psychological distress modifies the association between prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and infants' neurodevelopment.

Prenatal PFAS exposure and maternal psychological distress may adversely affect child neurodevelopment through shared biological pathways, such as hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis disruption and pro-inflammatory responses. However, whether psychological distress modifies PFAS-related neurodevelopmental risks remains unclear. Using data from the Shanghai Birth Cohort including 1779 mother-child pairs, we measured maternal PFAS levels during the first trimester and assessed maternal psychological distress (perceived stress, depression, and anxiety) during the second trimester. Child neu

The relationship between physical activity and music performance anxiety among university music students: a chain mediation model.

INTRODUCTION: Music performance anxiety (MPA) is a prominent psychological concern among university music students. Although physical activity has been associated with lower levels of anxiety, its association with music performance anxiety has received limited empirical attention. This study examined the association between physical activity and music performance anxiety among university music students, with particular attention to the mediating roles of psychological resilience and cognitive reappraisal. METHODS: A convenience sample of 1,236 music students was recruited from multiple univer

A Dynamic Examination of the Associations between Shyness, Psychological Difficulties, and Stressful Life Events during Early Adolescence.

Although numerous studies have established linkages between shyness and later psychological difficulties, most extant research did not examine variation in shyness over time in relation to variation in psychological difficulties over time or possible environmental factors of influence outside of the school context. The current study used multi-level modelling to simultaneously examine time-invariant and time-variant associations between shyness, the psychological difficulties of depressive symptoms and loneliness, and stressful life events at four waves across 1 year in a community sample of 2

The role of rumination, attentional biases and stress in psychological distress.

This experimental study examines the relationship between rumination and attentional bias. Additionally, the study aims to determine, within a diathesis-stress framework, whether rumination or attentional bias (or both) can prospectively predict psychological distress. Eighty-one participants completed selected measures of rumination and psychological distress at time one, in addition to experimental manipulations of rumination and mood, and measures of mood and attentional bias at time two. Seventy-three participants (90% follow-up) completed final measures of stress and psychological distres

Staff perceptions of psychological care on a stroke rehabilitation unit.

This article describes the general principles of a psychological care model and the outcomes of a questionnaire survey with members of a multidisciplinary stroke rehabilitation team. Twenty-eight staff members' responses concerning their understanding and attitudes about the presented model were analysed. The responses revealed that rehabilitation staff had good knowledge about possible psychological reactions of patients following a stroke. They were supportive of the idea that it is important to understand and address patients' psychological needs to improve recovery. The survey revealed dif
