The aim of this clinical report is to describe the successful treatment of a mandibular first molar presenting an extensive fracture at the buccal aspect in a young patient. The extension of the fracture was a negative prognostic factor for tooth maintenance. An alternative clinical treatment was proposed since the patient was young and presented with good oral hygiene and periodontal health. The treatment was based on orthodontic forced eruption associated with odontoplasty. A 3-year follow-up after the surgical procedure demonstrated the maintenance of periodontal health and good plaque cont…

Extraction of third molars is the most common surgical procedure performed in oral surgery on a daily basis and, despite surgical skills and expertise, complications may occur. Complications observed during or after third molar removal may include pain, swelling, bleeding, infection, sinus perforation and nerve damage. Fortunately, with a proper management and a good surgical technique, the incidence of such events is low. Subcutaneous emphysema associated with dental extraction occurs when the air from the high-speed dental handpiece is forced into the soft tissue through the reflected flap a…

BACKGROUND: Dental infections resulting before or after third molar removal are complications in which the maxillofacial surgeon may have to initiate an earlier management. The severe dental infections resulting before or after this procedure is one of the few life-threatening complications in which the maxillofacial surgeon may have to initiate an earlier management. Infections involving the temporal space are rare and infrequently reported. Infections in this space have also been observed secondary to maxillary sinusitis, maxillary sinus fracture, temporomandibular arthroscopy, and drug inje…

Injury of the inferior alveolar nerve during extraction of mandibular third molar is a well recognized, but uncommon, serious complication. It has a serious impact on oral function and its psychological impact on the patient is great. To prevent this complication, several studies have been conducted to identify the high-risk radiological signs associated with intimate anatomic relationships between third molar and infra-alveolar nerve and thereby establish a unified process of radiological exploration. In this paper, the authors present a review of the literature of the recent studies involvin…

Intentional tooth reimplantation can be an alternative treatment option for teeth with poor or hopeless prognosis where coronal and surgical endodontic treatment(s) are not possible. This technique may help to restore a natural tooth to function in preference to prosthesis/implant replacements. A 38-years old male was referred to private practice with persistent chronic apical periodontitis of a previously root canal treated mandibular left first molar. A furcal perforation and distolingual cusp fracture was previously repaired and treated with amalgam (~5 years ago). In view of the patient/to…

Molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) is a common developmental condition resulting in enamel defects in first permanent molars and permanent incisors. It presents at eruption of these teeth. Early diagnosis is essential since rapid breakdown of tooth structure may occur, giving rise to acute symptoms and complicated treatment. The purpose of this article is to review MIH and illustrate its clinical management in young children.

While there is gradually accumulating knowledge about molar crown formation and the timing of molar eruption in extant great apes, very little is known about root formation during the eruption process. We measured mandibular first and second molar root lengths in extant great ape osteological specimens that died while either the first or second molars were in the process of erupting. For most specimens, teeth were removed so that root lengths could be measured directly. When this was not possible, roots were measured radiographically. We were particularly interested in the variation in the len…

UNLABELLED: Many studies have shown that the greatest risk of fracture of the mandibular angle is related to the presence of an unerupted lower third molar, based on the hypothesis that there is a decrease in the area of bone and absorption of the impact in this area, leading some surgeons to indicate its prophylactic removal in patients most exposed to the risk factors of facial trauma. On the other hand, other authors have observed a greater frequency of condylar fractures in patients without an impacted lower third molar.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to relate the condylar and angle …

The occurrence of supernumerary teeth in the lower molar region is rare. A prevalence of less than 2% of cases occurring in this region has been estimated. The aim of this study was to present a clinical case of a 7-year-old female patient who had a supernumerary tubercular tooth between the distal root of the primary mandibular left second molar and the impacted permanent mandibular left first molar. Treatment consisted of surgical removal of the supernumerary tooth and case follow-up until the permanent molar's eruption, which occurred in 13 months. This study emphasizes the importance of: e…

Variations in the dental anatomy are found in all teeth. Knowledge of these variations, particularly concerning the location and treatment of all canals, is very important for the success of the endodontic therapy. The purpose of this study is to present a clinical case of a maxillary second molar with three palatal canals, two mesio-buccal and one disto-buccal canal. This report serves to remind clinicians that such anatomical variations should be taken into account during endodontic treatment of the maxillary molars.

BACKGROUND/AIM: To assess the possibility of the eruption of the lower third molar on the basis of the measured parameters: retromolar space, mesiodistal crown width of a molar and the third molar angulation.
METHODS: The investigation included 104 patients both sexes (43 boys, and 61 girls), 16 to 25 years old (mean age, 18 years). It was performed using the orthopanthomographic radiographs analysis of those patients. Each radiograph was covered by tracing paper, and the contoures of the following anatomic details were drawn: a) the crown and root contours of third molars, upper and lower ce…

A retrospective study, using panoramic radiographs, was conducted on 152 Taiwanese (72 males and 80 females) to investigate mandibular third molar eruption and impaction. The following measurements were made: inclinations and mesiodistal crown widths of the mandibular molars, vertical and horizontal spaces between the distal surface of the second molar and the anterior surface of the ramus, lengths and widths of the mandibular ramus and body, the ramus inclination, the mandibular plane angle, and the mandibular gonial angle. Differences between non-impaction and impaction groups were studied, …

The use of a Cizeta titanium miniscrew (Cizeta Surgical, Bologna, Italy) for treating an impacted mandibular second molar is presented in this report. The surgical procedure for placing the miniscrew and the subsequent orthodontic management are described, including orthodontic traction with a nickel-titanium closed-coil spring exerting 50 g of force. We concluded that the titanium miniscrew for skeletal anchorage is effective in treating deeply impacted mandibular second molars.
