Radial neuropathy is the third most common upper limb mononeuropathy after median and ulnar neuropathies. Muscle weakness, particularly wrist drop, is the main clinical feature of most cases of radial neuropathy, and an understanding of the radial nerve's anatomy generally makes localizing the lesion straightforward. Electrodiagnosis can help confirm a diagnosis of radial neuropathy and may help with more precise localization of the lesion. Nerve imaging with ultrasound or magnetic resonance neurography is increasingly used in diagnosis and is important in patients lacking a history of major a

Median nerve damage caused by trauma is rare, especially after the massage therapy. There have been no reports of median neuropathy in the distal forearm following massage therapy. A 61-year-old man developed paresthesia and numbness in the right hand after two sessions of massage therapy. Electrophysiologic studies, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging were used to localize and confirm the median nerve lesion in the distal forearm. Ultrasound-guided perineural steroid injection and oral pregabalin were administered. At the 1-month follow-up, more than 80% of the sensory symptoms had res

BackgroundUlnar nerve mononeuropathy diagnosis can be challenging depending on where neural lesion is present. Repetitive trauma during cycling is a rare cause of ulnar neuropathy.Case descriptionWe describe two patients who developed the handlebar syndrome, an ulnar nerve palsy at Guyon's canal after cycling. The first patient had the syndrome after a short-distance ride and she was treated surgically, while the second patient developed the classical syndrome after a long ride and received conservative treatment. Surgical treatment of the first patient led to functional recovery.ConclusionHan

A 39-year-old man presented with an 8-month history of pain and paresthesia of the right foot sole and difficulty in the right toe dorsiflexion. A neurological examination revealed weakness in performing both the ankle and right foot toe dorsiflexion, reduced right planta pedis sensation, and absent right Achilles tendon reflex. Tinel's sign was present on the right popliteal fossa and medial part of the right ankle. MRI of the right knee showed multiple cystic lesions in his right tibial nerve. The cystic lesions extended from the popliteal fossa and were thought to be intraneural ganglion cy

In the past years the peripheral nervous system (PNS) involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has received little attention despite its potential significant impact. The true prevalence of PNS in SLE reported in studies is variable and strongly influenced by American College of Rheumatology (ACR) case definition that includes seven PNS manifestations (acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, autonomic disorder, mononeuropathy, myasthenia gravis, cranial neuropathy, plexopathy and polyneuropathy). Other peripheral manifestations, such as chronic inflammatory demyelinat

A 4-year-old boy presented with right esotropia while receiving vincristine and dactinomycin for stage I Wilms' tumour according to the National Wilms Tumour Study-5 protocol. On examination, he had isolated limitation of his right lateral gaze. CT of the brain and cerebrospinal fluid examination were normal. A nerve conduction velocity study which was performed on the peripheral nerves revealed predominant motor polyneuropathy compatible with axonal loss involving the upper limbs. The patient had received a cumulative vincristine dose of 17 mg/m(2) before developing esotropia. Vincristine-ind

Invasion of cranial nerves and peripheral nerve roots, plexus, or nerves by non-Hodgkin lymphoma is denoted as neurolymphomatosis (NL). Four clinical patterns are recognized. Most commonly, NL presents as a painful polyneuropathy or polyradiculopathy, followed by cranial neuropathy, painless polyneuropathy, and peripheral mononeuropathy. Diagnosis of NL is challenging and requires integration of clinical information, imaging findings, and histopathologic examination of involved nerves or nonneural tissue and cerebrospinal fluid analysis. In the rare cases of primary NL, the diagnosis is often

Meralgia paresthetica is an entrapment mononeuropathy of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, which results in localized area of paresthesia and numbness on the anterolateral aspect of the thigh. We describe the use of alcohol neurolysis of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve in a 74-year-old female who presented with paresthesia over antero-lateral aspect of her left thigh, which was consistent with meralgia paresthetica. Diagnostic block with local anaesthetic confirmed the diagnosis but only archieved temporary pain relief. Alcohol neurolysis was then offered and patient responded well with no comp

Ischemic neuropathy from sources other than diabetes is less common, but can be encountered in clinical practice. Diagnosis can be challenging, and many patients may be referred to the electrodiagnostic laboratory. Overlapping mononeuritis multiplex is a common presentation, but distal symmetric polyneuropathy and monomelic neuropathy patterns can be seen. Depending on the disease associated with ischemic neuropathy, a mononeuropathy or a sensory-motor, axonal-demyelinating peripheral neuropathy may be seen as well. The treatment of ischemic neuropathy varies depending on the associated diseas

BACKGROUND: Ischemic neuropathy is an uncommon and poorly-understood condition affecting the peripheral nervous system. Most cases involve the upper limbs and occur after vascular surgery.
CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old man developed a multiple mononeuropathy of the lower right limb. The painful, axonal and predominantly sensory neuropathy was caused by ischemia and occurred subsequent to surgery for dissection of the aorta extended to the aortoiliac bifurcation. There was no sign of muscle or skin ischemia. The clinical course was slow and characterised by an incomplete recovery.
DISCUSSION: Is

Increased weight and, more recently, body mass index (BMI), have been suggested as risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). In an effort to determine the relative risk (RR) of obesity in the development of CTS, 949 patients who had an evaluation of the right upper extremity that included motor and sensory conduction studies of the median and ulnar nerves were reviewed. Of these patients, 261 were diagnosed with a median mononeuropathy at the wrist. Those individuals who were classified as obese (BMI > 29) were 2.5 times more likely than slender individuals (BMI < 20) to be diagnosed with

The author reported a clinical study of 8 cases of Churg-Strauss vasculitis which is a rare disease of unknown cause. The clinical features include allergic rhinitis (69%), sinusitis (88%), asthma (98%-100%), mononeuropathy (66%-98%), pulmonary infiltration and peripheral blood eosinophilia. The histopathologic manifestations are characterized by eosinophilic infiltration, granulomatous lesion and necrotising vasculitis. The lesions mentioned above may not appear simultaneously, but they may exist in different combinations. Therefore, not all the manifestations may be seen in a single biopsy s

Cheiralgia paresthetica, a mononeuropathy of the superficial branch of the radial nerve, is an uncommon problem, usually resulting from local trauma to the wrist. This report describes a 27-year-old patient who developed subdermal atrophy following local hydrocortisone injection as a treatment for deQuervain's tenosynovitis. Subsequently, she developed linear skin atrophy, a rare complication of steroid injection thought to result from lymphatic spread of the steroid suspension, extending proximally from the initial atrophic area in her hand into her forearm. Soon after wearing a wristwatch on

Clinical, laboratory and electrodiagnostic studies are the mainstay in the diagnosis of polyneuropathy. An accurate etiological diagnosis is of paramount importance to provide the appropriate treatment, prognosis and genetic counselling. High resolution sonography of the peripheral nervous system allows nerves to be readily visualized and to assess their morphology. Ultrasonography has brought pathophysiological insights and substantially added to diagnostic accuracy and treatment decisions amongst mononeuropathies. In this study the literature on its clinical application in polyneuropathy is …

BACKGROUND: Peripheral neuropathies may present with vascular skin lesions, such as livedo racemosa, ulcers, palpable purpura, or necrosis. These rare neurocutaneous associations can be severe and life-threatening.
OBJECTIVE: To determine (1) whether phenotypic correlations exist between neuropathy profiles and vascular skin lesion subtypes, and (2) whether these syndromes share a specific mechanism.
METHODS: We conducted a monocentric retrospective study at Montpellier University Hospital (1993-2022) including patients with peripheral neuropathy and vascular skin lesion(s) occurring as a sy

BACKGROUND: Mononeuritis multiplex is a rare autoimmune peripheral neuropathy that typically presents in the context of vasculitis, diabetes, infection, or as a paraneoplastic syndrome. Adverse immune-related neurological conditions have been increasingly reported with the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors against cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 and/or the programmed cell death protein 1/programmed death ligand-1 axis. Mononeuritis multiplex has only been reported twice from treatment of cancers with immunotherapy.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report a case of mononeuritis multiplex as a com
