Different methodologies to quantify uncertainties of air emissions.

Characterization of the uncertainty associated with air emission estimates is of critical importance especially in the compilation of air emission inventories. In this paper, two different theories are discussed and applied to evaluate air emissions uncertainty. In addition to numerical analysis, which is also recommended in the framework of the United Nation Convention on Climate Change guidelines with reference to Monte Carlo and Bootstrap simulation models, fuzzy analysis is also proposed. The methodologies are discussed and applied to an Italian example case study. Air concentration values

Monte Carlo study of the depth-dependent fluence perturbation in parallel-plate ionization chambers in electron beams.

PURPOSE: The electron fluence inside a parallel-plate ionization chamber positioned in a water phantom and exposed to a clinical electron beam deviates from the unperturbed fluence in water in absence of the chamber. One reason for the fluence perturbation is the well-known "inscattering effect," whose physical cause is the lack of electron scattering in the gas-filled cavity. Correction factors determined to correct for this effect have long been recommended. However, more recent Monte Carlo calculations have led to some doubt about the range of validity of these corrections. Therefore, the a

Local DRL estimation and effective dose calculation in paediatric interventional cardiology using measurements and Monte Carlo simulations.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric patients with congenital heart disease benefit greatly from X-ray diagnostic and interventional procedures. However, multiple procedures lead to prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation (IR), raising concerns for secondary long-term health issues. PURPOSE: This study aimed to establish local dose reference levels (LDRLs) for a National Reference Center for Congenital Cardiopathies (NRCCC) in Portugal. Additionally, it estimated effective and organ doses in paediatric patients undergoing coronary angiographies (CAs) using measurements and Monte Carlo simulations. METHOD

Improving animal-specific radiotherapy quality assurance for kilovoltage X-ray radiotherapy using a 3D printed dog skull water phantom.

BACKGROUND: Accurate dose assessment during animal radiotherapy is beneficial for veterinary medicine and medical education. AIM: To visualize the radiation treatment distribution of orthovoltage X-ray equipment in clinical practice using Monte Carlo simulations and create a dog skull water phantom for animal-specific radiotherapy. METHODS: EGSnrc-based BEAMnrc and DOSXYZnrc codes were used to simulate orthovoltage dose distributions. At 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 80 mm in a water phantom, the depth dose was measured with waterproof Farmer dosimetry chambers, and the diagonal off-axis ratio was

"Explosive" synthesis of metal-formate frameworks for methane capture: an experimental and computational study.

In this work, we show a solvent-free "explosive" synthesis (SFES) method for the ultrafast and low-cost synthesis of metal-formate frameworks (MFFs). A combination of experiments and in-depth molecular modelling analysis - using grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations - of the adsorption performance of the synthesized nickel-formate framework (Ni-FA) revealed extremely high quality products with permanent porosity, prominent CH4/N2 selectivity (ca. 6.0), and good CH4 adsorption capacity (ca. 0.80 mmol g-1 or 33.97 cm3 cm-3) at 1 bar and 298 K. This performance is superior to those of ma

Combining pharmacological therapy and vaccination in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia via model predictive control.

This paper describes a simulation study which aims at optimizing the therapy for the control of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia according to the following objectives: the reduction of the administered drug and vaccine amounts, the establishment of a auto-immune response and the long-term control of disease without reducing the effective of therapy with respect to the full treatment. A therapy optimization method is developed defining and solving a Model Predictive Control algorithm, preceded by an accurate Initial Guess search based on Monte-Carlo like approach. Simulation results show that the sugge

A correlated frailty model for analysing risk factors in bilateral corneal graft rejection for Keratoconus: a Bayesian approach.

There are many unknown causes that increase the rate of corneal graft rejection. In bilateral cases, some of these unknown causes are common, and some are individual factors. In this paper, we use a correlated frailty model to analyse risk factors for bilateral corneal graft in Keratoconus. Applying the piecewise constant baseline hazard model, we have performed a Bayesian analysis of the correlated frailty model using the Markov chain Monte Carlo method. The correlated frailty model and the shared frailty model are compared by deviance information criterion. The results show more accurate and…

Uncertainty estimation for trust attribution to speed-of-sound reconstruction with variational networks.

PURPOSE: Speed-of-sound (SoS) is a biomechanical characteristic of tissue, and its imaging can provide a promising biomarker for diagnosis. Reconstructing SoS images from ultrasound acquisitions can be cast as a limited-angle computed-tomography problem, with variational networks being a promising model-based deep learning solution. Some acquired data frames may, however, get corrupted by noise due to, e.g., motion, lack of contact, and acoustic shadows, which in turn negatively affects the resulting SoS reconstructions. METHODS: We propose to use the uncertainty in SoS reconstructions to att

Electron correlation in benzene: A QMC study of neutral and charged states.

In this paper, we employ variational Monte Carlo and fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo (FN-DMC) methods to investigate electron correlation effects in neutral and charged benzene molecules. Using orbitals from Hartree-Fock (HF) and density functional theory calculations, FN-DMC with the frozen-core approximation yields correlation energies consistent with CCSD(T) and ph-AFQMC, while all-electron FN-DMC lowers the correlation energy by ∼0.27 a.u., highlighting the role of core-electron contributions. On average, all-electron FN-DMC predicts vertical [VIP: 0.3477(34) a.u.] and adiabatic [AIP: 0.3

RapidBrachyIVBT: A dosimetry software for patient-specific intravascular brachytherapy dose calculations on optical coherence tomography images.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease is the most common form of cardiovascular disease. It is caused by excess plaque along the arterial wall, blocking blood flow to the heart (stenosis). A percutaneous coronary intervention widens the arterial wall with the inflation of a balloon inside the lesion area and leaves behind a metal stent to prevent re-narrowing of the artery (restenosis). However, in-stent restenosis may occur due to damage to the arterial wall tissue, triggering neointimal hyperplasia, producing fibrotic and calcified plaques and narrowing the artery again. Drug-eluting stents, w

Dynamic control of carbon-ion radiation dose distribution amid respiratory motion challenges: A review of prediction research using geant4 and deep learning physics-constrained models.

BACKGROUND: Carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) offers superior dose conformity and biological effectiveness; however, its precision is highly sensitive to respiratory motion, leading to dose uncertainty and interplay effects that compromise treatment accuracy. METHODS: A comprehensive literature synthesis was conducted on studies employing motion-resolved imaging techniques (e.g. SMEIR), dynamic dose prediction, 4D robust planning, and hybrid adaptive methods for CIRT. The study emphasised the use of Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations combined with deep learning models, including physics-informed neu

Feature Screening for Ultrahigh Dimensional Categorical Data with Applications.

Ultrahigh dimensional data with both categorical responses and categorical covariates are frequently encountered in the analysis of big data, for which feature screening has become an indispensable statistical tool. We propose a Pearson chi-square based feature screening procedure for categorical response with ultrahigh dimensional categorical covariates. The proposed procedure can be directly applied for detection of important interaction effects. We further show that the proposed procedure possesses screening consistency property in the terminology of Fan and Lv (2008). We investigate the fi

DFT, MC, and MD investigation of H₂MoO₄ adsorption on model AISI 304 stainless steel surfaces: effects of inhibitor loading, temperature, and confined shear.

CONTEXT: Molybdate-based inhibitors are promising candidates for corrosion protection of stainless steels; however, the molecular mechanisms controlling their adsorption behavior under different interfacial conditions remain insufficiently understood. This study investigates the adsorption behavior of H₂MoO₄ on model surfaces relevant to AISI 304 stainless steel, focusing on the effects of inhibitor loading, temperature, and confined shear. Electronic-structure analysis revealed that oxygen-containing regions act as electron-donating sites, whereas the Mo-centered region exhibits electron-acce

A short-trip combination method for reconstructing real-world NOx emission indicators from irregular OBD telematics of heavy-duty diesel vehicles.

Heavy-duty diesel vehicles remain an important in-use source of atmospheric NOx, yet long-duration characterization of real-world emissions is constrained by the cost of Portable Emission Measurement Systems (PEMS) and by the irregular structure of Onboard Diagnostics (OBD) telematics. Using 13 months of 1 Hz telematics data from 502 China VI heavy-duty diesel vehicles, covering approximately 1.7 million trips, this study developed a Short-Trip Combination Method (STCM) to reconstruct a screening-oriented estimate of the 90th-percentile Moving Average Window (MAW) specific NOx emission indicat

Joint Frailty Mixture Cure Model for Recurrent Event Data With Dependent Censoring: An MCEM Approach.

Advancements in modern medical technology have enabled cures for a fraction of patients while extending survival times for those who are not cured. For non-cured patients, disease recurrence is influenced by observed covariates and unobserved individual heterogeneity (random effects). In biomedical studies, dependent censoring is frequently encountered, for example, in cancer patients, where right censoring can be caused by death from unrelated diseases or due to an (unobservable) cure status. This study introduces a joint frailty model for recurrent event data with a cure fraction, effectivel

A high-precision image-guided platform for studying spinal cord toxicity under ultra-high dose rate electron irradiation.

Objective. While FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT) is recognized for normal tissue sparing, its effect in mitigating the toxicity of late-responding organs remains uncertain, limiting clinical adoption. With its clinical importance and steep dose-response, spinal cord is an ideal model for evaluating the FLASH effect on late toxicity. This work introduces a robust image-guided research platform for high-precision irradiation at both conventional (CONV) and ultra-high dose rates (UHDR) to enable FLASH late toxicity studies using a rat spinal cord model.Approach.A modified LINAC was employed to irrad

OptiGAN for crystal arrays: physics-informed generative modeling of optical photon transport in PET detector arrays.

Objective.Monte Carlo simulations of optical photon transport are computationally prohibitive for large-scale optical systems including detector arrays and positron emission tomography systems, restricting their practical use to single-crystal studies. This work presents an enhanced conditional generative adversarial network capable of replacing optical simulations at the crystal array level, extending our previous single-crystal approach to a 3  3 bismuth germanate detector array.Approach.We introduce Fourier feature encoding and a learnable latent mapping network as the modifications enablin
