The study was conducted in a large cotton textile mill in Surat City. A selected number of 278 employees were evaluated for social, anthropological and pulmonary functions. No parameters except the period of exposure to dust reduced pulmonary function; it was statistically significant in the case of vital capacity and maximum breathing capacity. The records of 188 consecutive patients admitted for acute opiate intoxication were analyzed retrospectively to evaluate the morbidity and mortality of opiates. The most frequently used of these drugs were heroin (127 cases) and methadone (41 cases). In 79 cases the opiate was associated with another psychodepressant, usually benzodiazepines, alcohol or barbiturates. Operative mortality and morbidity following oesophageal resection has fallen in recent years. We have attempted to identify the factors responsible for this improvement by reviewing the results of surgery at this hospital over the last 6 years. Two hundred and two oesophageal resections were performed between January 1981 and June 1987 for carcinoma. Of these, 21 patients (10.4%) died before leaving hospital. The basic symptoms of minor psychiatric morbidity (MPM) reported elsewhere were also found in a community survey in Taiwan. However, differences in the patterns of and manifestations of the symptoms were evident. The practicability of expanding indications for cesarean section in order to reduce perinatal mortality and possible prevention of perinatal losses by the correct choice of the method of delivery have been assessed through the analysis of the performance of Moscow hospitals. Perinatal mortality and morbidity can be reduced through means other than expanding indications for cesarean section. Further studies are needed to improve the management of labor and standards of neonatal care, particularly so for preterm infants.

Injury related to motor vehicle use among Baltimore City employees was examined throughout a 34-month period. Among an average of 30,000 municipal employees; representing 7% of the total Baltimore work force, almost 2% of all city employees were injured by motor vehicles each year. Twelve percent of all injuries and 16% of the injury costs were attributable to motor vehicles. In the police department, 43% of all costs were vehicle-related. Between 1980 and 1986, 101 nondissecting thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs) were repaired at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. Overall mortality was 15% with a 9.6% mortality for elective repair. The cancer morbidity in 3787 shipyard workers was studied between 1978 and 1983. In these shipyards the use of asbestos was abandoned in 1972. The overall cancer morbidity was found to be similar to that of the male population of the same city, but there were four cases of mesothelioma. There were 11 cases of lung cancer, as opposed to 9.8 expected cases. Men with both heavy and long exposure to asbestos had no increased risk of lung cancer. The occurrence of pleural plaques was not associated with the risk of developing cancer.

With the increasing use of cocaine in the United States, there has been growing concern regarding its effects on the fetuses and neonates of pregnant cocaine abusers. Fifty-two cocaine-using women enrolled in a comprehensive perinatal addiction program were evaluated and compared with 73 women who had used narcotics in the past and were maintained on methadone during pregnancy. Abortion mortality in the USA experienced an eight-fold decline between 1972 and 1981, with the greatest decline occurring after 1975. The risk for all groups of women declined, but the decline was greater for some groups than for others. A history of prior cesarean section was associated with a significant increase in maternal morbidity, including massive hemorrhage, placenta accreta, and hysterectomy. An aberrant right upper lobe (RUL) bronchus arising from the trachea (tracheal bronchus) can be responsible for recurrent pneumonia. In this hospital, 2% of children requiring bronchoscopy for respiratory symptoms are found to have a tracheal bronchus, which is frequently thought to be an incidental finding. We reviewed findings in 18 patients to determine when a tracheal bronchus is of clinical significance. The age at presentation ranged from 1 day to 54 months (mean 17 months). The children had recurrent pneumonia (nine), stridor (six), respiratory distress (two) and a thoracic mass (one).

A cohort study comparing risks of morbidity at the time of elective abortion between 399 young adolescents aged 17 years or less matched to 399 women aged 20 to 29 years was completed. The study matched for duration of gestation, types of procedure, parity, race, month of procedure, and insurance status. Results indicated a relative risk of post-abortal endometritis for adolescents compared to older women of 2.5 (95% C.L. 1.48, 3.85). The reasons for this difference are unclear.
