Investigation of the Correlation Between the Visually Induced Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire and the Turkish Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a phenomenon similar to motion sickness frequently observed in users of visual technologies. The Visually Induced Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (VIMSSQ), developed by Golding et al. (2006), is considered the most effective scale for assessing VIMS susceptibility levels. The main purpose of this study was to standardize the selection of participants for research conducted with virtual reality, especially motion sickness (MS) research. To achieve this, first, the Turkish version of the VIMSSQ was created to esta…

The effect of various options for decompression of degenerated lumbar spine motion segments on the range of motion: a biomechanical in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar spinal stenosis is a common disease in the aging population. Decompression surgery represents the treatment standard, however, a risk of segmental destabilization depending on the approach and extent of decompression is discussed. So far, biomechanical studies on techniques were mainly conducted on non-degenerated specimens. This biomechanical in vitro study aimed to investigate the increase in segmental range of motion (ROM) depending on the extent of decompression in degenerated segments. METHODS: Ten fresh frozen lumbar specimens were embedded in polymethyl methacrylate …

Assessing the Autonomic and Behavioral Effects of Passive Motion in Rats using Elevator Vertical Motion and Ferris-Wheel Rotation.

The overall goal of this study is to assess the autonomic and behavioral effects of passive motion in rodents using the elevator vertical motion and Ferris-wheel rotation devices. These assays can help confirm the integrity and normal functioning of the autonomic nervous system. They are coupled to quantitative measures based on defecation counting, open-field examination, and balance beam crossing. The advantages of these assays are their simplicity, reproducibility, and quantitative behavioral measures. The limitations of these assays are that the autonomic reactions could be epiphenomena of…

Dart thrower's motion and the injured scapholunate interosseous ligament: A scoping review of studies examining motion, orthoses, and rehabilitation.

STUDY DESIGN: Scoping review. INTRODUCTION: Dart thrower's motion (DTM) of the wrist primarily arises from the midcarpal joint, and minimizes stress to the scapholunate interosseous ligament (SLIL). After SLIL injury or surgery, early controlled DTM may reduce the effects of prolonged immobilization, while protecting SLIL integrity. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To summarize the literature on the effects of DTM on the injured and surgically repaired SLIL and the extent to which various DTM orthotic designs promote SLIL recovery. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted within 6 databas…

Motion--Cyclo-oxygenase-2 selective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are as safe as placebo for the stomach: arguments for the motion.

Traditional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are known to cause gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and gastrointestinal (GI) blood loss, as well as alterations in small bowel permeability. Patients at a high risk for these complications include those who are older than 60 years of age, those with a previous history of complicated peptic disease and bleeding, and those who take high dose or multiple NSAIDs, including low dose aspirin, corticosteroids or anticoagulants. The introduction of selective inhibitors of cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) has provided effective treatment of inf

Quantitative analysis of facial motion components: anatomic and nonanatomic motion in normal persons and in patients with complete facial paralysis.

The maximal static response assay of facial motion, described in 1994, enables the simultaneous measurement of multiple facial motions by tracking the positions of specific facial points. While the maximal static response assay provides accurate measurement of facial motion, the analysis of these data lacks the simplicity of a single-number scale such as the House-Brackmann system, a subjective scale traditionally used to classify facial function. The purpose of this study was to develop a simplified numerical index capable of summarizing the data generated by the maximal static response assay…

Data-driven motion compensation in HR-pQCT.

Objective.High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography enables the assessment of bone mineral density and three-dimensional microstructure of peripheral limbs. Due to its long scanning time, it is especially susceptible to patient induced motion artifacts. The goal of this study is to compensate for such artifacts without requiring excessive computation time, while still avoiding the hallucination of erroneous structures.Approach.This work proposes a machine learning-based approach for the rapid estimation of rigid motion parameters directly from raw projection data. The model i…

Scaling Analysis of Seismic Ground Motion Signals.

Earthquakes exhibit well-documented statistical regularities at the catalogue level, such as the Gutenberg-Richter magnitude-frequency relation and the Omori-Utsu aftershock decay, often interpreted as signatures of seismicity as a driven, dissipative system far from thermodynamic equilibrium. However, whether comparable signatures, such as scale invariance and anomalous diffusion, can be detected directly within individual ground motion recordings remains an open question. This work investigates whether acceleration, velocity, and displacement signals recorded during the 2009 Mw 6.1 L'Aquila …

Unpredictable Prey Motion Shapes Behavior Across Timescales.

UNLABELLED: Locating, tracking, and intercepting objects is a fundamental behavior for many organisms. For instance, predators must track and capture erratically moving prey for their survival. Using the echolocating bat as a model species, we investigate how short-term changes in target motion predictability affect longer-term motor plans when tracking a prey item. We used a paradigm where prey motion is under experimental control, and then applied computational methods to characterize how target motion predictability influences short- and long-term behavioral control. We find that target mot…

TIME in motion: How response takes shape.

Biomarkers for immune checkpoint inhibitors have largely treated the tumor immune microenvironment as a fixed property. In this issue of Cancer Cell, Lin et al. assemble a longitudinal pan-cancer single-cell atlas and show that the direction of immune-state remodeling during therapy is more informative than baseline composition.

System-bath approach to rotating Brownian motion.

Rotating equilibrated systems are widespread, but relatively little attention has been devoted to studying them from the first principles of statistical mechanics. We fill this gap by studying a Brownian particle coupled with a thermal bath made of rotating harmonic oscillators. We show that the Langevin equation that describes the dynamics of the Brownian particle contains (due to rotation) long-range correlated noise. In contrast to the usual situation of (nonrotating) equilibration, the rotating Gibbs distribution is recovered only for a weak coupling with the bath. In the presence of a uni

Scene-relative object motion biases depth percepts.

An important function of the visual system is to represent 3D scene structure from a sequence of 2D images projected onto the retinae. During observer translation, the relative image motion of stationary objects at different distances (motion parallax) provides potent depth information. However, if an object moves relative to the scene, this complicates the computation of depth from motion parallax since there will be an additional component of image motion related to scene-relative object motion. To correctly compute depth from motion parallax, only the component of image motion caused by sel…

Deciphering human decision rules in motion discrimination.

We investigated the eight decision rules for a same-different task, as summarized in Petrov (Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 16(6), 1011-1025, 2009). These rules, including the differencing (DF) rule and the optimal independence rule, are all based on the standard model in signal detection theory. Each rule receives two stimulus values as inputs and uses one or two decision criteria. We proved that the false alarm rate p(F) ≤ 1/2 for four of the rules. We also conducted a same-different rating experiment on motion discrimination (n = 54), with 4∘ or 8∘ directional difference. We found that the …

Reflection Removal Under Fast Forward Camera Motion.

The image quality of an in-vehicle black box camera is often degraded by the reflections of internal objects, dirt, and dust on the windshield. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm that simultaneously removes the reflections and small dirt artifacts from in-vehicle black box videos under fast forward camera motion. The algorithm exploits the spatiotemporal coherence of the reflection and dirt, which remain stationary relative to the fast-moving background. Unlike previous algorithms, the algorithm first separates stationary reflection and then restores the background scene. To this end,…
