Are inflammatory cells increased in painful human tendinopathy? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The role of inflammation in tendinopathy has historically been a subject of significant controversy. Our primary aim was to determine whether inflammatory cell numbers were increased in painful human tendinopathy versus healthy control tendons. Our secondary aim was to assess whether the inflammatory cells had been linked with symptoms or disease stage. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of the scientific literature using the PRISMA and Cochrane guidelines of the Medline database using specific search criteria. Only studies measuring inflammatory cells using specific marker

[Roles of Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography in the Management of Rheumatic Diseases].

Inflammation of soft tissues and the subsequent structural damage are the characteristic features of many rheumatic conditions. However, the conventional measures to evaluate these features are not accurate, potentially causing under- and over-diagnosis or treatment. Musculoskeletal ultrasonography, on the other hand, directly visualizes features which are characteristic to rheumatic conditions, such as synovitis, tenosynovitis, bursitis, enthesitis, crystal depositions, bone erosions, and osteophytes/enthesophytes. By visualizing these key features, ultrasound facilitates a more accurate eval

Winter sports injuries. The 2002 Winter Olympics experience and a review of the literature.

Injury patterns at the 2002 Winter Olympics were similar to those in recreational winter athletes, although injury rates were higher. The high rates of injury compared with reported rates in recreational athletes reflect the intensity of the competition and the high speeds of the athletes. In addition, rates are artificially elevated because we were not able to count the number of practice runs by each athlete, only the number of races. The highest rates of injuries resulting in positive MR imaging or plain radiographs were in snowboarders (28/1000 races), followed by alpine skiers (20/1000).

Successful return to work following a musculoskeletal injury.

Successful return to work following a musculoskeletal injury is facilitated by early intervention and rehabilitation that addresses the physical, psychosocial, and environmental factors in recovery. Job simulation and work hardening programs that involve the employee, the employer, and the health care providers are an effective approach to injured worker rehabilitation. The occupational health nurse's role can include early identification of injury, treatment coordination and follow up, matching worker abilities and restrictions to the job, and implementation of an injury prevention program. A

Incidence of musculoskeletal diagnoses for workers' compensation cases presenting to hospitals in Illinois (USA), 2017-2024.

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to characterize the incidence of musculoskeletal conditions presenting to Illinois hospitals that are billed to workers' compensation. METHODS: Musculoskeletal conditions were defined as those with M codes in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-CM) with and without concurrent acute injuries (S & T codes). RESULTS: From 2017-2024, there were 319,775 hospital presentations for work-related musculoskeletal diagnoses, of which 229,295 (69.5%) did not have a concurrent acute traumatic injury. Of those without a concurrent acute injury, 29.8%

Prevalence of Musculoskeletal Conditions in Heart Patients Undergoing Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Programs: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Exercise-based cardiovascular rehabilitation is an essential strategy for managing cardiovascular diseases. However, some factors, such as musculoskeletal conditions, may limit exercise capacity and adherence. Although musculoskeletal conditions can lead to activity limitations and influence the strategies used in cardiovascular rehabilitation programs, their management and evaluation are often under-recognized. Knowledge of these conditions is important for interprofessional providers to adapt therapeutic care for this population. This study aimed to verify, through a systematic review and me

Machine learning methods to support personalized neuromusculoskeletal modelling.

Many biomedical, orthopaedic, and industrial applications are emerging that will benefit from personalized neuromusculoskeletal models. Applications include refined diagnostics, prediction of treatment trajectories for neuromusculoskeletal diseases, in silico design, development, and testing of medical implants, and human-machine interfaces to support assistive technologies. This review proposes how physics-based simulation, combined with machine learning approaches from big data, can be used to develop high-fidelity personalized representations of the human neuromusculoskeletal system. The co…
