Neural correlates of cross-modal affective priming by music in Williams syndrome.

Emotional connection is the main reason people engage with music, and the emotional features of music can influence processing in other domains. Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental genetic disorder where musicality and sociability are prominent aspects of the phenotype. This study examined oscillatory brain activity during a musical affective priming paradigm. Participants with WS and age-matched typically developing controls heard brief emotional musical excerpts or emotionally neutral sounds and then reported the emotional valence (happy/sad) of subsequently presented faces. Parti…

Progressive ventral posterior cortical degeneration presenting as alexia for music and words.

Patients with posterior cortical atrophy may have dorsal visual system (occipital-parietal) dysfunction (optic ataxia, visuospatial disorientation, and simultanagnosia), ventral visual system (occipital-temporal) dysfunction (pure alexia, prosopagnosia, visual anomia, and agnosia), or both. We report a professional musician with ventral system dysfunction whose first symptom was alexia for music. Subsequently, she developed pure alexia for words but had preserved sorting of words. These observations suggest that the ventral visual system is important in music and word reading. However, sorting…

Quantitative EEG analysis during motor function and music perception in Tourette's syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a neurobehavioral disorder of childhood onset that is characterized by motor and vocal tics and associated behavioral disturbances including obsessive-compulsive symptoms. We performed 30 channel quantitative electroencephalograms (EEGs) on 13 Tourette patients and 26 controls and studied both resting and manumotor/music perception activation conditions. Resting EEGs did not show any differences between patients and controls, as known from the literature. However, during simple and complex hand movements, as well as music perception tasks, there were su…

Amplified music and young people's hearing. Review and report of Australian findings.

We gave 944 young people (aged 16 to 20 years) pure-tone audiometry, electroacoustic impedance tests, and ear, nose and throat examination. We questioned them about their histories of exposure to occupational and recreational noise. The data do not support the view that there is wide-spread hearing loss caused by exposure to amplified music in young people under the age of 21 years. However, the accumulated exposure of some of them to noise is such that, if their recreational patterns remain the same, they are at risk of some noise-induced hearing loss by their mid-twenties. Further empirical …

Hearing acuity in young people exposed to pop music and other noise.

An investigation by questionary, otological examination, and audiometry has been carried out on 505 students in higher education. Statistically significant hearing losses were found in the group that admitted frequent attendance at pop-music entertainment compared with a control group. Losses associated with vacation employment in loud noise or with gunfire exposure were also identified. Thses losses were unrecognised before investigation and indicate the need for preventive action.

Effect of music on short-term pain perception during peripheral intravenous cannulation.

BACKGROUND: There is no general consensus on which music genre is most effective for a specific condition. The impact of music on subjective pain perception during intravenous cannulation for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan was investigated. METHODS: 204 patients were assigned to one of four groups: listening to Mozart, favorite music, relaxation music, or no music (control). Pain was assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale at four time points. RESULTS: Favorite music significantly reduced pain perception both 30 s and 2 min after puncture while Mozart showed a trend towards reduced…

[Harmonie Vint'âge, a study on music and self-esteem among older adults].

In order to assess the impact of a music therapy workshop on the self-esteem of residents in residential care facilities for dependent elderly people, we developed eight music therapy sessions based on their musical sensibilities and tastes. Ten participants were assessed before and after the intervention in terms of self-esteem, anxiety, depression, quality of life, and problematic behaviors. Only self-esteem improved, highlighting the value of such care.

Gaze-based music generation system for users with severe speech motor impairment.

Users with Severe Speech Motor Impairment (SSMI) face difficulties interacting with digital systems due to limited speech and motor control. To address this, we present an eye gaze-based system that enables users with SSMI to generate short music using eye gaze control. The system combines a webcam-based eye-tracking with a music generation system that transforms user-selected images into music. A user study was conducted with 15 participants with SSMI across 74 sessions. The results show that the participants were able to interact with the system using gaze-based control, with an average enga…

Enhanced GPR imaging using high-resolution TR-MUSIC for underground object localization.

In this paper, we present a novel, high-resolution method, referred to as HRTR, for localizing underground objects. HRTR is based on a combination of the Time Reversal (TR) and Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithms, and can be readily integrated with conventional ground-penetrating radar (GPR) systems without requiring any additional hardware. The proposed method offers significant advantages, particularly in achieving higher resolution, which enhances the ability to distinguish ground surface reflections and detect shallowly buried objects-challenges often encountered with convent…

Music and neuroacoustic stimulation induce calm alertness via right-frontal beta2 asymmetry.

Music-based interventions are increasingly applied in performance, wellbeing, and stress-management contexts, yet rapid, self-administered neural markers of calm alertness-a state combining vigilance with emotional stability - remain insufficiently defined. This pilot study examined whether two contrasting auditory stimuli, atonal noise-music and 16-Hz binaural-beat music, modulate frontal beta asymmetry measured with a four-channel wearable EEG system, and whether this lateralized beta2 activity reflects attentional engagement and early self-regulatory readiness. Ten healthy adults completed …

Community music activity participation and loneliness among Chinese young adults living alone.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness has become an increasingly salient psychological and social issue among young adults in contemporary urban China. Young adults living alone may be particularly vulnerable because of reduced daily companionship, limited opportunities for sustained social interaction, and relatively weak emotional support networks. As an accessible form of cultural and social participation embedded in community settings, community music activity may be relevant to loneliness among young adults living alone. However, the associations linking community music participation, perceived restorat…

Awake surgery and music: Two illustrative cases of frontal resection in pianists.

Functional anatomy underlyng music perception and production has been quite abundantly described in literature, together with some examples of musical tasks adopted during awake surgery. We have used a keyboard-playing test for per-operative monitoring of two patients affected by a glial lesion. Our two cases differ in age, lateralization and hemispheric localization of the lesion. One of them, who presented a left middle frontal gyrus lesion, showed a decrease in his ability to play piano, together with other neurological abnormalities, from which he completely recovered within a year. The ot…
