BACKGROUND: Muscular Temporomandibular Disorders (mTMD) are musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders that have an unclear etiopathology, making clinical diagnosis and classification important for targeted treatment. Current taxonomies focus on pain reproduction, whereas MSK evaluation encompasses other clinical assessments. The ability to align taxonomy to MSK evaluation would improve diagnosis and targeted treatment.
OBJECTIVE: Review the recent clinical research for mTMD and identify emergent constructs to reframe the current taxonomy for myalgia classification of the Diagnostic Classification for T…

Haff disease was first described at the beginning of the twentieth century in Europe. Almost a century later, thousands of cases have now been reported in different countries. In Brazil, most cases are observed in the Amazon region, and its associated factors remain to be fully understood. This disease is an uncommon syndrome characterized by intense myalgia and rhabdomyolysis, which manifests within 24 h after consuming some types of freshwater or saltwater fish and crustaceans. A possible heat-stable toxin contained in seafood may be the cause of Haff disease, but this hypothesis is not yet …

Early diagnosis of organ involvement and bacteremia in brucellosis increases treatment success and may prevent poor clinical outcomes. This … tivity 89.74% and specificity 37.00%) in predicting focal involvement in patients with brucellosis. Myalgia and headache (OR: 2.970; 2692) were defined as clinical predictors of Brucella bacteremia. Focal involvement should be considered in patients with brucellosis in the absence of myalgia and fever, presence of low back pain, and sedimentation > 30 mm/ …

Introduction. Whilst there are reports of viral myopathies affecting children and the immunocompromised, infective myositis is a relatively rare inflammatory myopathy in adults. The clinical spectrum can range from benign myalgias to more serious complications in certain risk groups. Case Presentation. We present two cases of myositis as a result of parvovirus B19 infection. Conclusion. Viral myositis and parvovirus B19 associated myositis should be considered in adults presenting with significant myalgia.

BACKGROUND: Muscle pain and stiffness are strictly interconnected. Injuries frequently occur during sport activities, causing muscle pain, with or without stiffness, and require effective as well as fast-acting treatments. Topical products can be ideal for the treatment of such physical alterations as they are convenient and simple to use. In this study, it was investigated the application of a novel topical formulation, EGYFIL™, for the treatment of pain and stiffness due to muscle contracture, trauma, and/or overtraining. The lotion is composed of hyaluronic acid, a well-known ingredient for

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and clinical features of neurologic involvement in patients with acute hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection … ccurred in 43 acute HEV cases (30.4%) and consisted of neuralgic amyotrophy (NA, n = 15, 10.6%) and myalgia (n = 28, 19.8%). All NA cases were immunocompetent. Men had higher odds (OR = 5.2, CI 1.12-24.0, p = 0.03) of developing NA after infection with HEV, and in 3 couples simultaneously infected with HEV, only men developed NA. Bilateral involvement of …

OBJECTIVE: Vitamin D deficiency has been associated in some studies with nonspecific musculoskeletal pain and, more specifically, with statin-induced myalgia, which was ameliorated by high-dose vitamin D supplements. Our objective was to explore the association between vitamin D status and statin-induced myalgia and elevation of serum creatine kinase (CK).
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study, based on the electronic database of a health maintenance organization.
PATIENTS: Six thousand eight hundred and eight patients (71·5% women) to whom statins were dispensed during 2008 and who had ≥1 CK a…

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a common inflammatory disorder characterized by myalgia/stiffness in proximal hip and shoulder girdle, elevated C reactive protein, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate, but its pathogenesis is not fully elucidated. We report three cases of PMR who do not respond adequately to standard treatment. Those patients had typical symptoms of myalgia and muscle weakness, with elevated C reactive protein in absence of creatine kinase elevation. Muscle specimen showed the findings of vasculitis in all cases; therefore, muscular-limited vasculitis may be an underlying pathol…

Dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare autoimmune disease that causes symmetrical and predominantly proximal muscle weakness in the limbs and typical skin lesions. Its prevalence increased during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Viral infections may cause autoimmunity and trigger the pathogenesis of myositis. We present the case of a man with a long history of myalgia and muscle weakness, who was initially diagnosed with post-COVID-19 myalgia and subsequently developed progressive muscle weakness. Biochemical and muscle biopsy results confirmed DM. The patient responded favorably to t…

We report a case of a 60-year-old farmer presented with chief complaints of fever, myalgia, and headache of one week duration. Head-to-toe examination revealed an area of central necrosis surrounded by erythema (suggestive of eschar) on nape of the neck. A diagnosis of scrub typhus was made and the patient improved following 7-days course of doxicycline. Eschar is pathognomonic finding for clinical diagnosis of scrub typhus. This is to conclude, head-to-toe examination is indispensable for all the patients presenting with fever, myalgia, and headache.

Adult-onset acid maltase deficiency is a rare disorder characterized by progressive proximal muscle weakness and early respiratory insufficiency. We present a case of a 53-year-old woman who presented with several years of severe, diffuse myalgia and no evidence of weakness on examination. Further testing revealed a mildly elevated serum creatine kinase, a subtle vacuolar myopathy, decreased skeletal muscle α-glucosidase activity, and causative mutations in the responsible GAA gene. While likely very uncommon, adult-onset acid maltase deficiency may present with diffuse strength-sparing myalgi…

Three patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and psoriasis vulgaris were evaluated. The onset of psoriasis preceded by 3-7 years the onset of SSc in all cases. All the patients presented diffuse scleroderma, accompanied by lung and esophageal involvement in two cases. Sjögren's syndrome occurred in one case. Myalgia developed with the onset of SSc in two patients. The PASI score was not high (mean; 5.2), implying that the degree of psoriasis was not severe in these cases. However, this might have been due to the systemic prednisolone administered for myalgia.

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autoinflammatory disease characterized by recurrent febrile attacks and serositis. The diagnosis of FMF has been based on clinical criteria, including frequent symptoms and good response to the treatment with colchicine. Some patients with FMF show skin or muscle manifestations, which may be confused with other cutaneous or muscle disorders. Here we report a female in her 40s with periodic fever, migratory myalgia, dermatomyositis-like dermatitis, arthralgia, pharyngalgia, and lymphadenopathy. The initial clinical differential diagnosis included dermato…

The nature, frequency and cause of clinical features suggesting muscle involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus were studied in 20 patients during "active" disease. Half of these patients experienced varying combinations of myalgia, proximal muscle weakness and muscle tenderness. This group "with muscle features" had a higher incidence of arthralgia and much of their myalgia may simply have been due to pain referred from adjacent joints. However, a greater number of abnormalities were also found in the muscle biopsies of this group and it is likely that polymyositis and steroid myopathy wer…
