Coix seed is easy to be contaminated with aflatoxins. To find out its detoxification strategy and explore its storage environment affecting the contents of AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, and AFG2, 23 batches of coix seed samples were collected, in which nine batches of samples were selected to make mildewed by the method of artificial cultivation and natural mycotoxin production. These coix seed samples were further processed with plain-frying and bran-frying, respectively. Paralysis of undetermined etiology occurred in a group of pen-reared bobwhite quail. Other than severe dehydration, no gross or microscopic lesions were observed, and the cause was not identified. Fumonisin B1 was detected in the feed at 17.7 ppm. In an attempt to reproduce the condition, a feeding trial was conducted utilizing the suspect feed. The feeding trial was not successful in reproducing the symptoms observed in the field case.
