Furuncular myiasis of the scalp may closely mimic common cystic scalp lesions, including pilar and epidermal inclusion cysts, leading to delayed diagnosis and inappropriate treatment. We report the case of a 67-year-old man who presented with a painful right parietal scalp nodule that was initially diagnosed as a pilar cyst or epidermal inclusion cyst. Mild discharge, erythema, and inflammation partially improved following a two-week course of oral doxycycline; however, persistent pain prompted the patient to pursue surgical excision. Histopathologic examination revealed findings consistent wi…

The first case of myiasis caused by Lucilia caesar (L.) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in a wild boar, Sus scrofa L. (Artiodactyla: Suidae) is described. The myiasis occurred in October 2019 in Southern Italy and the identification of the agent was based on adult male morphology. The wild boar had a wound on its right side, near the neck, which was largely infested by larvae. The ecology, distribution and current literature status about cases of animal myiasis by this species is also included.

BACKGROUND: In tropical regions traumatic myiasis has long been recognized as a surgical complication. As a result of climate change pathogenic flies are migrating to more northern climates making this condition increasingly more prevalent in Europe.
OBJECTIVE: Currently, no data from Germany exist regarding the patient-related risk factors, incidence, clinical course and expected complications. This case series aims to fill that gap. Additionally, a relationship with weather data is discussed.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective case analysis of six patients discusses the risk factors,…

We report a case of semispecific myiasis in a cutaneous skull metastasis of cervical cancer. A 43-year-old woman developed larval infestation in an ulcerated occipital lesion. Fifty-two larvae were morphologically identified as Lucilia sericata. To control myiasis, we removed larvae by hand and applied petrolatum with topical zinc oxide starch powder. The ulcer surface improved, and no recurrence of myiasis was observed. Myiasis typically occurs in individuals with necrotic wounds, poor hygiene, or immunosuppression. This is the first report of myiasis occurring in a metastatic lesion of cervi…

Human myiasis is caused by the invasion of tissue or organs by maggots of certain dipterous flies. The present case is of an eight-year-old boy complaining of painful swelling in the scrotum with localized discharge. A maggot was removed and sent to a specialized laboratory for identification. The case was diagnosed as a scrotal myiasis caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga. The wound was cleaned with antiseptics, then antibiotic treatment was applied. Two days later, the wound healed completely. All previously documented cases of scrotal myiasis were associated with Dermatobia hominis. We docume…

This is the case of chronic chromoblastomycosis (CBM) in a 61-year-old male from the Dominican Republic (DR) with extensive cutaneous eruptions over multiple areas of the body including bilateral lower extremities and the flank extending to the back. A 61-year-old male with a history of morbid obesity, chronic kidney disease stage III, and well-controlled hypertension presented to the family medicine clinic for the evaluation of chronic painful skin lesions on his legs and torso. The lesions began 19 years prior, following a flood in the Dominican Republic (DR) where he was living at the time.

Myiasis is a parasitic infestation of tissues and body cavities of vertebrates by Diptera larvae. Nasal myiasis is mostly caused by the Sarcophagidae and Calliphoridae families. Many predisposing factors play a role in the appearance of nasal myiasis. In the treatment of the disease, the use of antiseptics together with mechanical cleaning is recommended. In this report, a case of nasopharyngeal myiasis in a 75-year-old patient hospitalized in the intensive care unit is presented. Nine larvae were detected in the patient's nose. Larvae were removed from the area and were cleaned with iodine so…

Myiasis, or the infestation of live humans and vertebrate animals by dipterous larvae, is a health issue worldwide. The economic impact and potential threat to animal health and wellbeing of this disease under the animal husbandry sector is considerable. Sheep are a highly vulnerable livestock category exposed to myiasis (sheep strike), due to several unique predisposing factors that attract flies. The successful mitigation of this disease relies on a thorough understanding of fly population dynamics associated with the change in weather patterns and the evaluation of this disease through diff…

BACKGROUND: Myiasis is an emerging disease caused by tissue invasion of dipteran larvae. In Uruguay, Cochliomyia hominivorax and Dermatobia hominis are the most frequent species. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics and the follow-up of children < 15 years hospitalized for myiasis in a reference center in Uruguay between 2010 and 2019.
METHODS: We conducted a descriptive and retrospective study by reviewing medical records. We analyzed the following variables: age, sex, comorbidities, origin, the month at admission, clinical manifestations, other paras…

BACKGROUND: Myiasis is a cutaneous infestation by the larvae of dipterous flies. It can be furuncular/nodular, papular, or pustular. Diagnosis of cutaneous myiasis depends mainly on clinical examination especially for the nodular form. The latter two forms can present diagnostic difficulties. Dermoscopy has been reported to be helpful. This report illustrates some of the dermoscopic features of this condition.
METHODS: The history, clinical findings, and dermoscopic findings of 15 affected individuals were documented.
RESULTS: Dermoscopy in all patients showed the posterior end of larvae (cr…

Rhinella alata is a small terrestrial bufonid that occurs in Ecuador, Colombia, and Panama. Between January 2014 and October 2015, we inspected 339 R. alata from Panama and report myiasis in eight of these toads. All infested toads were male and presented with mobile dark fly larvae visible beneath the ventral skin. At necropsy, we identified the larvae as belonging to the family Sarcophagidae (flesh flies). Flesh flies have been variously considered as predators, parasitoids, and parasites of anurans. There are at least four species of flesh flies that infect adult amphibians in the Neotropic…

Myasis is the infestation by fly larvae (Diptera) in live vertebrates including humans. Myasis has been reported most commonly in tropical and subtropical areas around the world with poor sanitation and presence of cattle. Neonatal umbilical myiasis is an important cause of death in bovines and produces major economic losses in the livestock industry. However, its presentation in humans is rare, with a few cases reported worldwide. Moreover, umbilical myasis can be life-treating due to the risk of larvae migration to deeper tissues of the abdomen, omphalitis, and sepsis. We describe the case o…
