We have measured the vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of the stretching vibrations of azide and cyanide ligated to the Fe3+ atoms of haemoglobin (Hb) and myoglobin (Mb). The antisymmetric azide-stretch of the low-spin haems have an anomalously large g-value of ca. -1 x 10(-3). In contrast, CN- has a g-value of ca. +2.4 x 10(-3). We also show, for the first time, that a significant VCD occurs for the azide ligand antisymmetric stretches of non-haem proteins; we measure a g-value of ca. -1 x 10(-4) for azide bound to haemerythrin. Two well conditioned high school athletes developed rhabdomyolysis after rather modest exercise in activities for which they had not specifically trained-weight lifting and playing bongo drums. Neither patient had a history of exercise intolerance or rhabdomyolysis before. The extent of the rhabdomyolysis in the first patient was extreme (CPK 181,690), and he did not develop renal impairment. The second patient's course was complicated by the use of a contrast study, and he developed marked renal impairment.

EPR studies combined with fully atomistic Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and an MD-EPR simulation method provide evidence for intrinsic low rotameric mobility of a nitroxyl spin label, Rn, compared to the more widely employed label MTSL (R1). Both experimental and modelling results using two structurally different sites of attachment to Myoglobin show that the EPR spectra of Rn are more sensitive to the local protein environment than that of MTSL. This study reveals the potential of using the Rn spin label as a reporter of protein motions.

Rhabdomyolysis involves the breakdown of muscle due to an inciting insult. It has been reported to have many etiologies. Some of the more common causes are trauma and medications. Vaccination is the best strategy for the development of herd immunity and for the control of the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) pandemic. As the number of immunizations across the globe reaches a record number, random cases of diverse adverse effects of the vaccines are being documented. We report a case of renal biopsy-proven myoglobin-induced acute tubular injury requiring dialytic support post-CovishieldTM vaccination. Awareness of this rare complication is necessary so that it can be recognized early, and renal injury avoided.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical findings in pediatric rhabdomyolysis and the predictive factors for acute kidney injury (AKI) in Korean children.
METHODS: Medical records of 39 Korean children, who were newly diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis from January 2008 to December 2015, were retrospectively analyzed. Forty-two of 369 athletes were found to have a positive Occultest on the first urine sample voided following athletic competition.
