The mortality caused by snakebites is more damaging than many tropical diseases, such as dengue haemorrhagic fever, cholera, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis and Chagas disease. We report the proteomic and antivenomic characterization of Crotalus tigris venom. This venom exhibits the highest lethality for mice among rattlesnakes and the simplest toxin proteome reported to date. Antibodies against Bothrops asper myotoxin were purified from a polyvalent antivenom by affinity chromatography. These antibodies neutralized most of the myotoxic activity of crude B. asper venom, as judged by histologic evaluation of skeletal muscle and determination of plasma creatine kinase levels in mice.
