Skull Base Osteomyelitis After Nasopharyngeal Cyst Excision.

We present a case of an 80-year-old male who developed skull base osteomyelitis after nasopharyngeal cyst removal. A review of the literature regarding complications after nasopharyngeal cyst removal was performed. We describe the difficulty of diagnosing an osteomyelitis infection and the best approach to recognizing osteomyelitis before complications worsen.

Postmortem Stability of SARS-CoV-2 in Nasopharyngeal Mucosa.

Analyses of infection chains have demonstrated that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is highly transmissive. However, data on postmortem stability and infectivity are lacking. Our finding of nasopharyngeal viral RNA stability in 79 corpses showed no time-dependent decrease. Maintained infectivity is supported by virus isolation up to 35 hours postmortem.

Complete response to radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal sarcomatoid carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal sarcomatoid carcinoma (SaCa) is extremely rare, and concurrent chemoradiation is the standard treatment for squamous cell-based nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). This case report gives the first explanation of a nasopharyngeal SaCa patient treated with volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) with simultaneous integrated boost (SIB), which is an excellent treatment modality that leads to complete response for locally advanced NPC. A 70-year-old male presented with nasal obstruction, epistaxis, and right neck node enlargements. Examination revealed an extensive tumor of nasopharyngeal

Nasopharyngeal airway and subcranial space analysis in Pfeiffer syndrome.

Tracheotomy in infancy helps patients with Pfeiffer syndrome to survive by preventing respiratory crisis, but difficulty in decannulation may consequently be a challenge. This study has investigated the regional abnormalities of the nasopharyngeal airway in children with Pfeiffer syndrome to provide an anatomical basis for the surgical treatment and decannulation of the upper airway. Seventy-two preoperative computed tomograms (CT) (Pfeiffer syndrome n=30; control n=42) were included. The airway volume, cross-sectional area, and cephalometrics were measured using Materialise software. Patients

Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Degeneration in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: a Unique Association.

Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD) is a rare disorder that is associated with lung or gynecological malignancies and Hodgkin lymphoma. Neurologic symptoms are commonly the initial presenting sign leading to the diagnosis of an underlying malignancy. We are presenting an Asian male with progressive lower extremity weakness with EBV-positive nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and anti-Yo antibodies. Peculiarly, transient diffuse leptomeningeal enhancement is seen on MR imaging. This is the first report of PCD associated with NPC and thus illustrates that PCD embodies a boarder set of disea

Current perspectives on the origin theory of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a histopathologically benign and highly vascular neoplasm, which is mainly seen in young adolescent men. It is a rare tumor, accounting for 0.05% of all head and neck neoplasms. The etiology of JNA has always been a controversial topic. Some researchers believe that it is a genuine tumor. Others consider that it is the result of vascular malformation caused by the non-absorption of artery residues in the first branchial arch during development, and that hormone and genetic effects are also related to its etiology. In addition, the JNA was so called

Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis: report of four cases and review of the literature.

Even if tuberculosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, nasopharyngeal location is unusual and extremely rare. We report four new cases observed with short time interval suggesting a trend towards increased frequency. The diagnosis was confirmed by histological analysis after a biopsy. The evolution was favorable after anti tuberculosis chemotherapy. In the light of those observations and a review of the literature, we will discuss different characteristics of this disease and we will highlight the need of a systematic biopsy in order to confirm diagnosis and exclude undifferentiated

Nasopharyngeal Carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Children in Coastal Kenya.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP) is a leading cause of child mortality globally, killing around half a million children aged 5 years and less per year. Nasopharyngeal carriage of SP is a prerequisite to disease, and the prevalence of colonization reaches 100% within the first few years of life. Serotype prevalence varies geographically, impacting the serotype coverage of pneumococcal vaccines, and serotype prevalence data are limited from large regions of the world, including sub-Saharan Africa. We enrolled 323 unvaccinated children, aged 4-7 years from coastal Kenya and obtained nasopharyngeal s

[Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis: report 2 cases and review of the literature].

Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is a noteworthy disease and it should be differentiated from with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, especially in southern China, because of both having similar clinical presentations such as cervical lymph node enlargement and lesions in nasopharynx. Here we report 2 middle-aged patients of nasopharyngeal tuberculosis;between them, one was male, another was female. They came to hospital with the symptoms of pharyngeal pain and neck node, respectively. The former patient was accompanied by repeated fever. His chest radiographic displayed suspected active lesions; and nasophary

Nasopharyngeal Glial Heterotopia with Intracranial Extension: A Case Report.

Nasopharyngeal glial heterotopia is a mass composed of mature neural tissue occurring outside the central nervous system and is extremely rare. The preoperative diagnosis of such a mass in the head and neck region is challenging. In this study, we report a case of a 16-month-old patient presenting with respiratory distress and snoring caused by nasopharyngeal glial heterotopia. Radiologic imaging and histopathology are obligatory for the definitive diagnosis of glial heterotopia. Preoperative evaluation of an intracranial connection is one of the most essential issues in the presence of pediat

Nasopharyngeal Papillary Adenocarcinoma as a Second Head and Neck Malignancy.

Nasopharyngeal adenocarcinomas are rare tumours, and include neoplasms arising from the nasopharyngeal surface epithelium as well as those of minor salivary gland origin, each of which is distinct from the other. The former encompasses nasopharyngeal papillary adenocarcinoma (NPAC), also known as low grade NPAC and thyroid-like NPAC, an extremely unusual malignancy bearing histomorphological similarity to papillary thyroid carcinoma, and displaying indolent clinical behaviour. We report the case of a 41-year-old lady who developed NPAC as a second malignancy five-and-a-half years after being d

Sonographic assessment of swallowing in irradiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Ultrasonography is an emerging clinical tool to study the dysfunction of swallowing muscles. This was the first sonographic study to assess the relationship between suprahyoid muscle contraction, hyoid bone displacement, and penetration-aspiration status (PAS) during swallowing in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients treated with radiotherapy (RT). The study also aimed to establish reliability data for the sonographic technique described. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Geniohyoid muscle contraction was quantified using brightness-mode ultrasonography

Thyroid-Like Low-Grade Nasopharyngeal Papillary Adenocarcinoma.

Thyroid-like low-grade nasopharyngeal papillary adenocarcinoma (TL-LGNPPA) is a rare entity. Patients often present with complaints of nasal fullness, obstruction, and epistaxis. It may be confused with metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma due to its histologic similarity and overlapping immunohistochemical studies, but it is important to distinguish between the two because of differing treatment modalities and prognosis. A significant difference between the two is that despite both entities demonstrating TTF-1 positivity, TL-LGNPPA usually does not stain for thyroglobulin. TL-LGNPPA exhibit
