[Indications for the application of a high resolution coil in MR tomography].

This is the first study with high spatial resolution Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), performed with a high resolution coil in a clinical whole-body system. Measurements were recorded with a slice thickness of 2 mm. A 256 x 256 matrix and a 2.5 cm field of view were used resulting in a pixel size of 0.01 mm2. MR images of the skin, hand, wrist, knee and ankle of 14 healthy volunteers, of three anatomic pathology tissue specimens and of three formalin-fixed specimens were obtained. Normal anatomy was identified and compared with the three gross anatomic pathology sections. The skin, hands, wri

Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the paranasal sinus: a morphological and endocrinological study.

Four cases of small cell carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses were studied histologically, ultrastructurally, and endocrinologically. All tumors showed features of undifferentiated carcinoma with alveolar patterns but without acinar or squamous differentiation and contained cells possessing endocrine-type small secretory granules, which were indistinguishable from non-neoplastic neurosecretory granules. The three cases also possessed a small number of microtubules, and in one of these fine cytoplasmic filaments were observed. One case showed elevated plasma levels of cortisol and adrenocorticotr

Adriamycin in the treatment of cancer.

Adriamycin is a new anticancer antibiotic with a wide spectrum of activity against solid tumours. The results obtained with this agent in 159 patients with histologically confirmed advanced metastastic malignancies are reported. Encouraging results were obtained in patients with sarcomas of bone and soft tissue (12/22). Response was also seen in mesothelioma (3/9) and lung cancer (5/15). A variety of other neoplasms was also treated and results obtained in neuroblastoma, testicular tumours, stomach carcinoma, breast cancer and nephroblastoma are reported. Treatment is discussed, with reference

SPLENIC HOMOTRANSPLANTATION.

During the past 12 months, five clinical whole-organ splenic homotransplantations have been carried out with the objective of providing active immunologic tissue for the recipient patients. In one case with hypogammaglobulinemia, it was hoped that the transplanted tissue would alleviate a state of immunologic deficiency. In the other four, all of whom had terminal malignancies, the purpose was to superimpose a state of altered immunologic reactivity upon the host in the hope of thereby suppressing the inexorable growth of the neoplasms. As will be described, these procedures can now be judged

Unusual Manifestation of Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis: A Soft Tissue Mass in an Immunocompetent Patient.

We report a case of disseminated tuberculosis (TB) manifesting as a soft tissue mass of the back associated with pain and difficulty walking. Its clinical presentation poses diagnostic challenges and can sometimes mimic neoplasms. The first imaging study with computed tomography was suggestive of metastatic bone disease or locally advanced malignancy. Advanced imaging studies, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT), are required to evaluate the extent of organ involvement. A definitive diagnosis necessitates histopathological analysis and microbiological confirmat

Multiple Glomus Tumors in the Left Foot of 41-year-old Woman. A Case Report.

Glomus tumors are very uncommon neoplasms arising from glomus bodies. They differ in the proportion of components, i.e. smooth muscle tissue, vessels and glomus cells. The most common location of this kind of tumor is the subungual area of digits. In other locations, glomus tumors are very rare but have been reported, among others, in bone, lungs, trachea and stomach. Glomus tumors are often misdiagnosed because of diverse clinical presentations. They can be asymptomatic, may lead to cosmetic discomfort, but clinical presentation often involves pain, tenderness and cold hypersensitivity. We pr

Pathology and Differential Diagnosis of Anterior Skull Base Tumours.

The anterior skull base is a complex anatomic site which may be involved by a large number of biologically heterogenous neoplasms. They arise from the epithelium, both surface mucosa and glands, as well as soft tissues, bone, and cartilage. Many benign and malignant tumours in the anterior skull base are similar to their counterparts in other anatomic sites. Interestingly, unique tumours including teratocarcinosarcoma, olfactory neuroblastoma, and angiofibroma can also be found. Recognition of overlapping morphologic features of entities encountered in this anatomic site and the corresponding

CD137 is expressed in follicular dendritic cell tumors and in classical Hodgkin and T-cell lymphomas: diagnostic and therapeutic implications.

CD137 (also known as 4-1BB and TNFRSF9) is a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily. Originally identified as a costimulatory molecule expressed by activated T cells and NK cells, CD137 is also expressed by follicular dendritic cells, monocytes, mast cells, granulocytes, and endothelial cells. Anti-CD137 immunotherapy has recently shown promise as a treatment for solid tumors and lymphoid malignancies in preclinical models. We defined the expression of CD137 protein in both normal and neoplastic hematolymphoid tissue. CD137 protein is expressed by follicular dendritic cells i

Bk virus: a clinical review.

We present a review of the clinically oriented literature about BK virus, a relative of JC virus, which is the etiologic agent of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). The kidney, lung, eye, liver, and brain have been proposed as sites of BK virus-associated disease, both primary and reactivated. BK virus has also been detected in tissue specimens from a variety of neoplasms. We believe that BK virus is most often permissively present in sites of disease in immunosuppressed patients, rather than being an etiologic agent that causes symptoms or pathologic findings. There is, however

Virus-induced pancreatic cancer in guinea fowl: a morphologic study.

The morphologic lesions in the pancreas of 350 guinea fowls infected with avian osteopetrosis virus strain Pts-56 were studied. Focal unspecific changes in the acinar tissue, including reduction of zymogen content, diminution of cytoplasm, and dilatation of acinar lumens accompanied with substitution of the affected acini by tubular structures lined with centroacinar-like cells, developed 2 months from post infection (p.i.) in about 30% of the birds. Adenomatous growths of ductules with mucin-producing or mucin-nonproducing epithelium were observed independently or parallelly to these changes

Ossifying fibromyxoid tumor in the mandibular gingiva: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Ossifying fibromyxoid tumors (OFTs) are uncommon soft tissue neoplasms. Only one case arising in the gingiva has been described. METHODS: A 21-year-old woman presented with a painless exophytic mass located in the right posterior mandibular gingiva, which was identified 6 months earlier. Radiographs showed irregular calcifications inside the lesion, discrete irregularity of alveolar bone, and integrity of buccal and lingual cortical bone. An incisional biopsy was performed based on the clinical diagnostic hypothesis of peripheral ossifying fibroma or peripheral giant cell granulom

P14.05 How far can they grow... - Two clinical examples

Abstract Introduction: Cerebral metastases are the most common form of central nervous system (CNS) tumours in adults. However, malignant neoplasm may also involve structures external to the brain, such as tissue surrounding the base of the skull, and then metastasize to the brain either by direct invasion or by spreading by the cranial nerves. CASE1: A 74 year-old man, with a past history of chronic kidney disease due to renal artery thrombosis and hypertension, was admitted in the emergency room (ER) complaining of persisting pain in the superior half of the right hemiface and frontal region

Unusual Presentation of Solid-Variant Aneurysmal Bone Cysts as Primary Digital Skin Lesions: A Case Series Emphasizing Radiologic and Dermatopathologic Correlation.

Solid-variant aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are rare benign bone neoplasms that lack the characteristic prominent blood-filled cystic spaces of classic ABCs and can present in unusual locations, such as the distal extremities. We report three patients with an age range of 40-53 years (mean 48) of solid-variant ABCs presenting as skin-associated masses on the fingers, a highly unusual and diagnostically challenging presentation from both clinical and dermatopathologic standpoints. These lesions initially posed a diagnostic challenge due to their resemblance to more common dermatologic entities, s

Role of macrophages and phagocytes in orchestrating normal and pathologic hematopoietic niches.

The bone marrow (BM) contains a mosaic of niches specialized in supporting different maturity stages of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells such as hematopoietic stem cells and myeloid, lymphoid, and erythroid progenitors. Recent advances in BM imaging and conditional gene knockout mice have revealed that niches are a complex network of cells of mesenchymal, endothelial, neuronal, and hematopoietic origins, together with local physicochemical parameters. Within these complex structures, phagocytes, such as neutrophils, macrophages, and dendritic cells, all of which are of hematopoietic ori

High frequency of leukemic lymphomas with osteosarcomas but no myeloid leukemias in C3H mice after 239Pu citrate injection.

Female C3H strain mice, which do not spontaneously exhibit frequent bone tumors and myeloid leukemias, were injected intraperitoneally with various doses of 10 to 12,000 Bq/animal of monomeric 239Pu citrate to clarify lifetime carcinogenesis caused by alpha-particles distributed mainly in the skeleton. Survival time was reduced significantly at mean skeletal doses of more than 2.93 Gy and was accompanied by marked life-shortening as compared to the controls due to an earlier increase in neoplastic or non-neoplastic death. Bone tumors, almost all of which were osteosarcomas, were not found in t

Plasma Cell-Rich Lymphoid Neoplasm in an Endocervical Polyp of the Uterine Cervix in a Perimenopausal 52-Year-Old Woman.

BACKGROUND: The adaptive immune system consists of T and B lymphocytes, with some B lymphocytes further differentiating into plasma cells that secrete antibodies and make up the humoral immune system. Extramedullary plasmacytoma, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, and plasmablastic lymphoma are all plasma cell-rich lymphoid neoplasms that rarely present in the female genital tract. To date, few case reports of these malignancies arising within the uterine cervix exist. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 52-year-old perimenopausal woman who presented to her primary

Extended Reconstruction of the Right Forearm as Treatment for a Giant Cell Tumor With the Combined Use of a Free Fibular Flap and a Pedicled Inguinal Flap.

Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is a benign neoplasm with aggressive behavior, predominantly affecting young adults. In the majority of these lesions, curettage is the treatment of choice; however, those classified as Campanacci grade III typically require extensive surgical resection, resulting in significant bone and soft tissue defects. This represents a significant reconstructive challenge but offers the opportunity for limb preservation and functional maintenance instead of amputation. We present a 39-year-old male with a grade III GCTB of the distal radius, who had extensive tumor resect

A hybrid form of myeloid/NK-cell acute leukemia and myeloid/NK-cell precursor acute leukemia.

Natural killer (NK)-cell leukemia/lymphoma is a rare entity that has been defined only in recent years. In the Revised European-American Lymphoma and World Health Organization classifications, only the mature NK-cell malignancies are included. However, at least 3 types of precursor NK-cell neoplasms have been reported in the literature. These include myeloid/NK-cell acute leukemia, myeloid/NK-cell precursor acute leukemia, and blastic NK-cell lymphoma/leukemia. These leukemias are characterized by the presence of blasts, which express CD56, in the peripheral blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes, an

Management of Central Giant Cell Granulomas of the Jaws: An Unusual Case Report with Critical Appraisal of Existing Literature.

Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is an uncommon, benign but aggressive osteolytic neoplasm of the craniomaxillofacial region, histologically characterized by an abundance of evenly distributed multinucleated giant cells within a sea of spindle-shaped mesenchymal stromal cells, scattered throughout the fibrovascular connective tissue stroma containing areas of hemorrhage. A rapid diagnostic assessment, together with an adequate histopathologic verification, is essential to improve the management and the prognosis of this locally destructive lesion. A rare case of a large destructive CGCG inv

Primary intracranial myxoma of the lateral skull base: a rare entity in clinical practice.

Myxomas are rare benign tumors arising from mesenchymal tissues throughout the body. These tumors are usually seen in the atrium of the heart and the jawbone. Involvement of the skull base with intracranial extension is extremely rare, and only a few cases of primary intracranial myxomas have been described in the literature. A rare case of primary myxoma of the temporal bone is presented in this article. The patient underwent a skull base surgery with a pre-diagnosis of possible chondrosarcoma. The tumor pathology revealed a diagnosis of myxoma with bone and meningeal involvement. Despite the
