Ethmoid sinus disease: CT evaluation in 400 cases. Part I. Nonsurgical patients.

The unique anatomy of the ethmoid sinuses makes it difficult to interpret "soft-tissue clouding," especially on plain films. The clinical significance of isolated or generalized soft-tissue disease within ethmoid cells is unclear, and the patterns of bone erosion or remodeling must be relied on in establishing a specific differential diagnosis. Of 400 patients studied, 186 had inflammatory disease and 214 had tumors. Squamous cell carcinomas, metastases, and a few aggressive sarcomas were found almost exclusively to have bone destruction, while 94% of the remaining neoplasms were characterized

Pediatric vulvar squamous cell carcinoma in a liver transplantation recipient: a case report.

Here we report the first Korean case of a girl who developed noninvasive squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva at the age of 16 years. She was taking tacrolimus, an immunosuppressive agent, after living-related liver transplantation. The vulvar masses were microscopically proved as vulvar intraepithelial neoplasm II and III, even squamous cell carcinoma in situ. Human papillomavirus subtypes (69 and 73) and human papillomavirus types (66, 70, 73, and 43) were detected in the vulvar mass and the cervicovaginal smear, respectively. The outcome of liver transplantation for children has been marked

Immunohistochemical expression of OCT4 and CD44 in major and minor salivary gland neoplasms.

The aim of this study was to identify tumor parenchyma cells exhibiting immunohistochemical profile of stem cells by evaluating the immunoreactivity of OCT4 and CD44 in a number of cases of salivary gland neoplasms. The sample consisted of 20 pleomorphic adenomas, 20 mucoepidermoid carcinomas, and 20 adenoid cystic carcinomas located in major and minor salivary glands. The expression of OCT4 and CD44 was evaluated by the percentage of positive cells and the intensity of expression. All studied cases showed positive expression of OCT4 and CD44 and higher values than the control groups. For OCT4

Clear cell atypical fibroxanthoma:a clinicopathologic study.

INTRODUCTION: The atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is considered by most authorities to represent a superficial or minimally invasive variant of malignant fibrous histiocytoma that most often presents as a solitary nodule on the sun-exposed skin of the elderly. Among the rarest variants is the clear cell AFX, a lesion which raises consideration to a differential diagnosis encompassing a variety of neoplastic and non-neoplastic clear cell proliferations. METHODS: We describe three cases of a distinctive cutaneous neoplasm arising in the sun-exposed skin of elderly patients. In all cases, formalin-

Utility of immunohistochemistry in separating thymic neoplasms from germ cell tumors and metastatic lung cancer involving the anterior mediastinum.

A variety of primary and metastatic neoplasms can involve the anterior mediastinum and have similar radiographic or histologic appearances. We report an immunohistochemical (IHC) panel that includes CD5, placental-like alkaline phosphatase (PLAP), thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF-1), cytokeratin (CK) 7, CK20, CK5/6, and CD57 for the separation of thymic neoplasms from germ cell tumors (GCTs) and metastatic lung malignancies. One hundred cases representing different types of neoplasms involving the anterior mediastinum were retrieved and consisted of 20 pulmonary adenocarcinomas (PAs), 20 pu

Colliding tumor of the paranasal sinus.

Sinonasal malignant neoplasms comprise only 3% of all head and neck malignancies. Synchronous and metachronous tumors of the head and neck have been described, but rarely have there been reports of a single tumor with two distinct histologies. Here, we describe a case of a sinonasal malignant neoplasm with two distinct histologies. A case report and literature review was performed. We present a case of paranasal sinus neoplasm involving two malignant cell types. An 83-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of symptoms suggestive of chronic sinusitis, which included nasal congestion and

Invasive squamous cell carcinomas and precursor lesions on UV-exposed epithelia demonstrate concordant genomic complexity in driver genes.

Although squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) are the most frequent human solid tumor at many anatomic sites, the driving molecular alterations underlying their progression from precursor lesions are poorly understood, especially in the context of photodamage. Therefore, we used high-depth, targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) of RNA and DNA from routine tissue samples to characterize the progression of both well- (cutaneous) and poorly (ocular) studied SCCs. We assessed 56 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) cutaneous lesions (n = 8 actinic keratosis, n = 30 carcinoma in situ [CIS], n = 18

B3 thymoma mimicking poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma: Diagnostic pitfalls of anterior mediastinal mass fine needle aspiration.

B3 thymoma is a rare malignant type of thymic epithelial neoplasm found in the anterior mediastinum. Diagnosis of thymoma from fine needle aspiration (FNA) can be challenging due to the infrequency of sampling and its morphologic overlap with other entities such as squamous cell carcinoma, lymphoma or thyroid carcinoma. We report a case of B3 thymoma mimicking poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma. We present its diagnostic pitfalls on cytology specimens, especially where it concerns identifying the correct location of the lesion, discuss the differential diagnosis, and correlation with the

Marjolin Ulcer: Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising in a Modeling Agent-Induced Ulcer.

The use of modeling substances, such as mineral oil, can trigger chronic inflammatory reactions with serious complications, including persistent ulceration. In rare cases, these lesions may undergo malignant transformation to aggressive cutaneous neoplasms, such as Marjolin ulcers. We present the case of a 55-year-old transgender woman with a history of mineral oil injection who developed a chronic leg ulcer that underwent malignant transformation, with histological confirmation of a well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. This case highlights the importance of close monitoring of chronic

The many clinico-pathologic faces of actinic keratosis: an atlas.

Actinic keratoses (AKs) are intraepithelial neoplasms formed by atypical keratinocyte proliferation. Histopathologically, typical AKs are characterized by a slightly thickened epidermis, usually with irregular downward buds, orthokeratosis alternating with parakeratosis ('pink and blue') with loss of the underlying granular layer and a disarrangement of the epidermis with atypical keratinocytes at the basal layer. There are several histopathological variants of AK according to the different degrees of keratinocytic atypia, epidermal hyperplasia/atrophy, inflammation and pigmentation. Some auth

[Malignant diseases of the inner nose--epidemiology and occupational medicine aspects].

Squamous cell carcinomas are the most frequent malignancies of the inner nose, followed by adenocarcinomas, adenoid cystic carcinomas, and other malignant neoplasms. Carcinomas of the nose can be recognized as occupational diseases if there has been a professional exposition to ionizing rays, certain arsenic compounds, hexavalent chrome compounds, nickel, oak or beech wood dust. The sources of danger relevant in industrial medicine are indicated. At present, adenocarcinomas induced by dust of wood are of special significance: 16 out of 22 carcinomas of the nose recognized as occupational disea

Stomal recurrence. A critical analysis of risk factors.

Stomal recurrence developed in 5% of the 507 patients who underwent total laryngectomy for a squamous cell carcinoma. The most common site of the primary tumor was the glottis, followed by the supraglottic and pyriform sinus regions. Initial subglottic extension of the tumor and metastatic lymphadenopathy were the most significant risk factors. The primary tumor size, prior emergency tracheostomy, and conservation surgical procedures had no effect on the incidence of stomal recurrence. The median survival in patients with stomal malignant neoplasms was only five months. In high-risk patients,

Porocarcinoma coexisting at a site of Bowen disease in a 63-year-old woman.

Porocarcinoma is an unusual, locally aggressive and potentially fatal neoplasm. Several cutaneous malignancies have been described in association with porocarcinoma, including squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and tricholemmal carcinoma. Previous reports have indicated that the occurrence of malignant tumours in combination with porocarcinoma is extremely rare, in particular with regard to Bowen disease (BD). We report an uncommon case of porocarcinoma occurring synchronously in a single BD lesion in a 63-year-old woman with multiple BD lesions. The clinical and histological findin

Squamous cell carcinoma malignant transformation in mature cystic teratoma of the ovary: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Mature cystic teratoma of the ovary is classified among the benign ovarian germ cell neoplasms, and its malignant transformation occurs very rarely (in about 2%). As a result of nonspecific signs and symptoms, preoperative diagnosis of theses malignancies is a challenge to clinicians, resulting in delayed diagnosis (in advanced stages) and poor outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 43-year-old Iranian woman with progressive distension of the abdomen and hypogastric pain, who was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma transformation in a mature cystic teratoma of the

BCOR-Rearranged Sarcoma of the Tonsil.

A tonsillar mass in a young patient with no medical issues routinely presents as an infectious process. Practitioners must maintain a broad differential if diagnostic testing does not support an infection. Neoplasm must be excluded. Otolaryngologists must consider malignancies other than squamous cell carcinoma, the most common oropharyngeal malignancy, and lymphoma. Rare tumors, such as sarcomas, must also be considered. Otolaryngologists must be familiar with the proper management of rare oropharyngeal malignancies.
