Minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy: an effective treatment for kidney stones in infants under 1 year of age. A single-center experience.

We aimed to present the outcomes of PNL surgery performed in infantile patients with small renal stones who were younger than 1 year of age. A single-center prospective trial was initiated and during the period between Jan 2013 and Jan 2015, PNL was applied to 20 renal units of 16 infants (6 girls and 10 boys), including 4 patients with bilateral kidney stones. PNL was performed in patients with renal stones larger than 2 cm, as well as stones resistant to SWL or renal stones that were undetectable during SWL. The mean age of the patients was 9.55 (5-12) months. Of the 20 renal units, 1 had co

[Persistent hematuria after embolization for hemorrhagic complication following percutaneous nephrolithotomy: value of the study of red blood cell volume in urine].

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy is associated with a high risk of complications, particularly bleeding, which makes it a potentially invasive technique. Management of haemorrhagic complications sometimes requires the use of embolization. Recurrence after embolization can occur as a result of revascularization or recanalization of vessels, but post-embolization infarction can also lead to persistent haematuria. The authors report the clinical case of a 36-year-old patient presenting with recurrence of severe haematuria after two successive highly selective embolizations. Analysis of the mean corpu

Comparing the outcomes of non-papillary versus papillary mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy for treatment of multiple renal stones: a prospective randomized study.

Papillary puncture is commonly recommended in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) because it is thought to reduce the risk of vascular injury. In patients with multiple renal stones, however, calyceal anatomy and stone distribution can make a strict papillary approach difficult. Non-papillary access may be a practical alternative during mini-PCNL, but its safety and effectiveness remain debated. This study compared non-papillary and papillary access in mini-PCNL for multiple renal stones. This prospective randomized study enrolled 108 patients with multiple renal calculi. Patients were allocat

Case report: Treatment of urinary calculi using percutaneous nephrolithotomy in patient with ileal conduit and history of bladder transitional cell carcinoma.

Urinary calculi are a frequent complication of urinary diversion following radical cystectomy, including in ileal conduit systems. We report the case of a 38-year-old man with ileal conduit urinary diversion, following radical cystectomy for transitional cell cancer, who presented with symptomatic bilateral kidney stones. By reporting the medical record and management procedure for this patient, we aim to demonstrate the successful management of kidney stones via supine percutaneous nephrolithotomy, using an Alken telescopic metal dilator, under spinal anesthesia. Consistent with most literatu

Ergonomics in percutaneous nephrolithotomy: a comparative analysis of musculoeskeletical and mental workload in prone vs. supine positions with two lithotripters-a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a common technique in the surgical management of renal lithiasis, but it also represents a significant workload for surgeons. Factors such as the patient's position and the type of lithotripter used influence the physical and mental load on the surgeon. The study aimed to identify stressors related to PCNL by comparing the physical and mental workload experienced by urologists during PCNL under different patient positions and using two lithotripters. METHODS: Four expert endourologists were evaluated when simulating PCNL at four different condit

Assessment of lower calyceal single-access percutaneous nephrolithotomy for staghorn stones: A single-surgeon and a single-center experience at KAMC, Riyadh.

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is still the mainstay and the treatment of choice for most complex renal stones. The success of PCNL is defined by achieving a stone-free rate (SFR). Lower calyceal access PCNL is established to be the safest percutaneous access to the renal system, but controversy is present when it comes to SFR in comparison to upper calyceal and middle calyceal accesses. AIM: We aim to prove that lower calyceal access PCNL is the safest PCNL access and has the same efficacy as upper calyceal access PCNL for staghorn stones. METHODOLOGY: All lower calyceal

Is normal saline the best irrigation fluid to be used during percutaneous nephrolithotomy in renal failure patient? A prospective randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic procedures like percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) needs continuous irrigation for better vision and to wash away stone fragments and blood clots. Systemic absorption of irrigation fluids may lead to fluid overload and electrolyte disequilibrium. Renal failure patients are more prone to these electrolyte disturbances. We have evaluated the outcomes of normal saline as irrigation solution to be used in renal failure patient in comparison to distilled water. METHODS: Seventy-six patients with renal calculi were enrolled in this study between September, 2014, and December,
