Mental Health and Health-Related Quality of Life Among Nephrology Nurses: A Survey-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

Nephrology nurses face health and wellness challenges due to significant work-related stressors. This survey, conducted online between July 24 and August 17, 2020, assessed the psychological well-being of nephrology nurses in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic (n = 393). Respondents reported feeling burned out from work (62%), symptoms of anxiety (47% with Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 [GAD-7] scores ≥ 5), and major depressive episodes (16% with Patient Health Questionnaire-2 [PHQ-2] scores ≥ 3). Fifty-six percent (56%) of survey respondents reported caring for COVID-19 patients, …

Cost-analysis of persistent hyperkalaemia in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients under nephrology care in Italy.

AIM: In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), hyperkalaemia (HK) (potassium level ≥ 5.0 mEq/L) is associated with poor clinical outcomes. This study provides novel insights by comparing management costs of CKD patients with normokalaemia vs those with persistent HK regularly followed in renal clinics in Italy. METHODS: To this aim, a Markov model over life-time horizon was developed. Time to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and time to death in CKD patients were derived from an observational multi-centre database including 1665 patients with non-dialysis CKD stage 1-5 under nephrology car…

Diagnosis, Treatment, and Outcomes in Children With Congenital Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus: A Pediatric Nephrology Research Consortium Study.

Background and Objectives: Congenital or primary nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) is a rare genetic disorder that severely impairs renal concentrating ability, resulting in massive polyuria. There is limited information about prognosis or evidence guiding the management of these patients, either in the high-risk period after diagnosis, or long-term. We describe the clinical presentation, genetic etiology, treatment and renal outcomes in a large group of children <21 years with NDI. Design: A multi-center retrospective chart review. Results: We report on 66 subjects from 16 centers. They we

Prognostic Significance of Asymptomatic Brain Natriuretic Peptide Elevation at Nephrology Referral in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether asymptomatic elevation of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is associated with cardiovascular events (CVEs) or heart failure (HF) in predialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. METHODS: We measured BNP in 482 asymptomatic predialysis patients with CKD stages 2-5 at nephrology referral between August 2004 and October 2010, and followed them prospectively to investigate the prognostic significance of BNP using Cox models and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses. The primary composite end point was the time to death or the first nonfatal CVEs. S…

Epidemiology of chronic renal failure in children: a report from Sweden 1986-1994. Swedish Pediatric Nephrology Association.

In a national survey, chronic renal failure (CRF) in Swedish children was studied during the period 1986-1994; 118 children (72 boys, 46 girls) with CRF, defined as a glomerular filtration rate below 30 ml/min per 1.73 m2 body surface area, were identified. The median annual incidence of CRF was 7.7 and that of terminal renal failure (TRF) 6.4 per million children. The prevalence of preterminal renal failure decreased from 29 to 21 per million children over the study period, while the prevalence of TRF increased from 17.8 in 1986 to 38 per million children in 1994. The increase in TRF prevalen

[Diabetic kidney disease (Update 2026) : Guidelines in a collaboration of the Austrian Diabetes Association and the Austrian Society of Nephrology].

Epidemiological investigations have shown that approximately 2-3% of all Austrians have diabetes mellitus with renal involvement (diabetic kidney disease, DKD). Therefore, this concerns approximately 250,000 people in Austria. The risk of occurrence and progression of DKD can be attenuated by lifestyle interventions as well as optimization of blood pressure, blood glucose control and specific drug classes. These guidelines represent the joint recommendations of the Austrian Diabetes Association and the Austrian Society of Nephrology for the definition, diagnostics and treatment strategies of D…

[Nutritional care and use of intradialytic parenteral nutrition in hemodialysis in France: A national survey among nephrology dietitians].

Malnutrition remains a major concern among hemodialysis patients in France and worldwide. An online survey was disseminated by the Association de Diététique et Nutrition en Néphrologie (ADNN) between March and June 2023, targeting its dietitian members via email and professional social networks. A total of 88 responses were collected (35% of those solicited), of which 73% were from the public or non-profit sector, and 47% of professionals reported following more than 150 hemodialysis patients annually. The aim of this study was to assess the practices of dietitian-nutritionists regarding the s

Therapeutic Challenges and New Era in Fibrillary Glomerulonephritis with the Introduction of DNAJB9: Experience from a Tertiary Nephrology Center.

Background/Aim: Fibrillary glomerulonephritis (FGN) is a rare glomerular disease characterized by non-amyloid fibrillary deposits in the glomeruli and positive staining for DNAJB9. There is currently no treatment of choice, and the poor prognosis highlights the need for further research. We aimed to investigate the clinical and pathological characteristics and outcomes of FGN patients from a tertiary nephrology center. Methods: A retrospective cohort study of eleven patients diagnosed with FGN between 2016 and 2025, based on kidney biopsy and DNAJB9 positivity, was used. Partial response was d…

Nephrology Care in Man-Made and Natural Disasters: Addressing the Unique Challenges for the Provision of Home Dialysis in Disasters.

Dialysis-dependent patients, especially those on peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis, rely heavily on uninterrupted access to electricity, clean water, and supply chains. Disasters, both natural and man-made, disrupt these critical systems, placing patients at significant risk of treatment interruptions, hospitalization, and mortality. Preparing for these challenges is vital to ensure continuity of life-saving care during crises. This review aims to examine the unique challenges faced by dialysis patients during disasters, including logistical barriers, workforce shortages, and infrastru

Differences in training and practice in tunnelled haemodialysis catheter removal: a survey of nephrology trainees across United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: The tunnelled haemodialysis catheter (TDC) removal is a necessary skill for the nephrology trainee as this task is undertaken routinely in renal units. Little published data exists to establish current practice and there is no national guidance regarding TDC removal in United Kingdom (UK). Anecdotally, trainees suggest they do not have sufficient supervised training in TDC removal. We aimed to establish the differences in training and practice in TDC removal among nephrology trainees across UK. METHOD: We created an online survey with twenty questions for trainee and non-training …

The first randomized controlled trial in pediatric nephrology: the history of the International Study of Kidney Disease in Children (ISKDC).

The International Study of Kidney Disease in Children (ISKDC), begun in 1966, conducted the first international collaborative randomized blinded controlled trial in pediatric nephrology and one of the first in either pediatrics or nephrology. For this trial, the ISKDC developed the criteria, such as those for response and relapse, used today to describe the clinical course of the nephrotic syndrome, and the trial generated the nephropathologic terminology and criteria which largely remain the current standards. Over an approximately 20-year span, the ISKDC followed the natural history and eval…
