Current investigations on the immunohistochemical occurrence and co-occurrence of biogenic polypeptides in the mammalian carotid body were reviewed and extended by our own recent findings. The family of chromogranins and related peptides in glomus cells appears to have a widespread interspecies distribution, whereas other peptides investigated occur in a species-specific pattern. Immunoreactivity to antisera against opioids, which derive from the proenkephalin sequence, appears to be present in glomus cells of the rabbit, cat, dog, and a shrew. Conversely, glomus cells of pig and guinea pig pr

PURPOSE: Recent studies have reported that tetracycline may induce chronic inflammatory responses in the adjacent soft tissues. The purpose of the present study was to determine if dry, powdered tetracycline evoked an inflammatory response in nerve tissue.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized and bilateral mental nerves were exposed. Half of the 40 nerves were intentionally injured by removing the epineurium, and the remaining nerves were uninjured. In a prospective, randomized, double-blind manner, equal volumes of color-matched, precoded tetracycline powd…

We obtained quantitative measurements of capillary numbers, areas, and diameters in atrophic (pale) and normal primate optic nerve heads. The number of capillaries per square millimeter in pale optic disks was not significantly different from that in normal optic disks. Because the loss of all nerve fibers leads to a 50% decrease in nerve head substance, capillaries must atrophy to maintain a constant relationship between capillary number and tissue volume. The mean size of individual capillaries in atrophic nerve heads was smaller than normal, leading to a decrease of more than 27% in the per

INTRODUCTION: Nerve tubes seeded with cultured Schwann cells have become a promising alternative to nerve autografts. However, the functional results of these bioartificial cellular grafts remain to be improved. To imitate the three-dimensional structure of peripheral nerves, we designed a Schwann cell-seeded intrinsic framework within a semipermeable biodegradable collagen nerve tube (Integra).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 90 rats a 25 mm gap was created at the sciatic nerve of the right lower limb. In group I, the gap was treated using the "bioartificial nerve graft". In group II, the tube fill

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the connective tissue structures that enable the sciatic nerve to glide through the deep gluteal and upper limb area. Characterizing the gliding space may improve the understanding of non-discogenic sciatica and support clinical approaches to its treatment.
METHODS: Thirty limbs of alcohol- and Thiel-fixed specimens (21 female, 9 male; mean age 85.2 years) were examined using macroscopic dissection. Additional visualization was achieved through methacrylate corrosion casts. Ultrasound examinations were performed on specimens and two healthy volunteers to as

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Endothelial cells play a key role in peripheral nerve regeneration, forming aligned vasculature which bridges the gap in the injured nerve tissue and guides the regrowing tissue. This work aimed to mimic key features of this aligned vasculature by differentiating endothelial cells from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and incorporating them into engineered neural tissue (EngNT).
METHODS: hiPSCs were differentiated into endothelial cells with the temporal addition of growth factors and biomolecules. These hiPSC-derived endothelial cells (hiPSC-ECs) were inco…

OBJECTIVE: While conventional imaging can readily identify ventricular enlargement in hydrocephalus, structural changes that underlie micros … l levels on short- and long-term follow-up, suggesting that surgical intervention can restore optic nerve tissue microstructure. This technique is a safe, noninvasive imaging tool that quantifies alterations of neural tissue, with a potential role for evaluation of pediatric hydrocephalus.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the hypothesis that nitric oxide contributes to neurotoxicity in the optic nerve heads of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, we have determined the presence of the 3 isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in the tissue.
METHODS: Histological sections of optic nerve heads from normal subjects and patients with glaucoma who have moderate to advanced nerve damage were studied by immunohistochemistry. Polyclonal antibodies to NOS-1, NOS-2, and NOS-3 were localized with immunoperoxidase staining.
RESULTS: In normal eyes, NOS-1 is sparsely present in astrocytes

Injury to the facial nerve during a face lift is a relatively rare but serious complication. A large body of literature has been dedicated toward bettering the understanding of the anatomical course of the facial nerve and the relative danger zones. Most of these prior reports, however, have focused on identifying the location of facial nerve branches based on their trajectory mostly in two dimensions and rarely in three dimensions. Unfortunately, the exact location of the facial nerve relative to palpable or visible facial landmarks is quite variable. Although the precise location of facial n

This study aimed to demonstrate the temporal bone histopathology of two cases of Wegener's granulomatosis in which the initial symptoms were profound hearing loss and facial nerve palsy respectively. The first case, a woman of 44, suffered profound hearing loss which was remarkably improved by steroid and cyclophosphamide treatment for a time, and which seemed to be caused by invasion from granulation tissue filled in the tympanic cavity. The second case was a 61-year-old woman presenting with the facial nerve palsy. The bony canal of the horizontal portion of the facial nerve was destroyed du

A stump neuroma is caused by the disorganised growth of axon cylinders into proliferating granulation tissue, but this is stopped by an undamaged epineural sleeve. We report experiments in the rat in which the epineural sleeve of the stump of the sciatic nerve was freed from nerve fascicles for about 5 mm and then sealed with a synthetic tissue adhesive. Neuroma formation was largely prevented in comparison with the results of other methods. This new technique has been used to treat 68 painful neuromas in 36 patients. All but three of the patients were cured or improved and none were made wors

Oral tissues including the periodontal ligament, gingiva, and tooth pulp have a relatively dense sensory innervation and a rich vascular supply. Teeth and supporting tissues are susceptible to tissue injury and inflammation, partly due to lack of collateral blood and nerve supply and to their low compliance. This review focuses on dental nerve functions and adaptive changes in the trigeminal ganglion and tooth pulp after peripheral injuries. An overview of the peptidergic innervation of oral tissues is presented, followed by a discussion of plasticity in neuropeptide expression in trigeminal p

Cancericidal doses of irradiation therapy to be the head and neck may be followed by paralysis of cranial nerves due to fibrosis of tissue about the nerves and infiltration of the nerves with fibrous tissue. The hypoglossal nerve is particularly prone to this delayed effect of irradiation therapy and a case is presented here in which there was bilateral hypoglossal paresis appearing three years after therapy.

Optimal levels of functional recovery in peripheral nerve injuries remain elusive due to the architectural complexity of the neuronal environment. Commercial nerve repair conduits lack essential guidance cues for the regenerating axons. In this study, the regenerative potential of a biosimulated nerve repair system providing three types of regenerative cues was evaluated in a 10 mm sciatic nerve-gap model over 4 weeks. A thermo-ionically crosslinked gellan-xanthan hydrogel conduit loaded with electrospun PHBV-magnesium oleate-N-acetyl-cysteine (PHBV-MgOl-NAC) nanofibers was assessed for mechan

Reconstruction of damaged nerves remains a significant unmet challenge in clinical medicine. Topographical and mechanical stimulations play important roles to repair peripheral nerve injury. The synergistic effects of topography and mechanical rigidity may significantly accelerate nerve regeneration. In this work, a nerve-guiding collagen/polylactic acid (PLA) electrospun scaffold is developed to facilitate peripheral nerve repair. The obtained anisotropic PLA electrospun scaffolds simulate the directional arranged structure of nerve realistically and promote axonal regeneration after sciatic

The distribution of fast migrating [3H]leucine-labelled proteins was studied in transected and repaired rabbit hypoglossal nerves. The nerves were repaired 90 days earlier with mesothelial chamber or epineurial suture technique. Fast migrating radiolabelled proteins were transported into the distal nerve segment and neurophysiological recordings from the tongue as well as the presence of myelinated axons in the distal nerve segment verified successful regeneration. The total amount of radioactivity was increased in repaired nerves as compared to contralateral nerves. In both groups there was a
