Neuropsychology of environmental navigation in humans: review and meta-analysis of FMRI studies in healthy participants.

In the past 20 years, many studies in the cognitive neurosciences have analyzed human ability to navigate in recently learned and familiar environments by investigating the cognitive processes involved in successful navigation. In this study, we reviewed the main experimental paradigms and made a cognitive-oriented meta-analysis of fMRI studies of human navigation to underline the importance of the experimental designs and cognitive tasks used to assess navigational skills. We performed a general activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of 66 fMRI experiments to identify the neural

Differential expression of GAP-43 protein in the rostral brain neurons of early chick embryos.

Brain development is composed of several processes, which are chronologically and mechanistically overlapping each other. However, the process of the earliest neural circuit formation in the rostral brain is less understood compared with other processes in brain development, in part because of the lack of appropriate molecular markers. Accordingly, the identification of molecular markers for nerve cells may accelerate the detailed analysis of neural development. Growth associated protein 43 (GAP-43) is a major growth cone protein that regulates F-actin dynamics, and it has been often used as a

Effect of Tbx1 knock-down on cardiac performance in zebrafish.

BACKGROUND: Tbx1 is the major candidate gene for DiGeorge syndrome (DGS). Similar to defects observed in DGS patients, the structures disrupted in Tbx1(-/-) animal models are derived from the neural crest cells during development. Although the morphological phenotypes of some Tbx1 knock-down animal models have been well described, analysis of the cardiac performance is limited. Therefore, myocardial performance was explored in Tbx1 morpholino injected zebrafish embryos. METHODS: To elucidate these issues, Tbx1 specific morpholino was used to reduce the function of Tbx1 in zebrafish. The diffe

Behavioral neuroendocrinology and treatment of anorexia nervosa.

Outcome in anorexia nervosa remains poor and a new way of looking at this condition is therefore needed. To this aim, we review the effects of food restriction and starvation in humans. It is suggested that body weight remains stable and relatively low when the access to food requires a considerable amount of physical activity. In this condition, the human homeostatic phenotype, body fat content is also low and as a consequence, the synthesis and release of brain neurotransmitters are modified. As an example, the role of neuropeptide Y is analyzed in rat models of this state. It is suggested t

Odor-driven activity in the olfactory cortex of an in vitro isolated guinea pig whole brain with olfactory epithelium.

We developed a new technique to isolate a whole guinea pig brain with an intact olfactory epithelium (OE) that enables us to access the ventral surface of the brain including olfactory areas with ease during natural odor stimulation. We applied odorants to OE and confirmed that odor-induced local field potentials (LFPs) could be induced in olfactory areas. In the olfactory bulb (OB) and the piriform cortex (PC), odor-induced LFPs consisted of a phasic initial component followed by a fast activity oscillation in the beta range (20 Hz). To understand the neural mechanisms of odor-induced respons

Herpesviruses, polyomaviruses, parvoviruses, papillomaviruses, and anelloviruses in vestibular schwannoma.

Etiology of vestibular schwannoma (VS) is unknown. Viruses can infect and reside in neural tissues for decades, and new viruses with unknown tumorigenic potential have been discovered. The presence of herpesvirus, polyomavirus, parvovirus, and anellovirus DNA was analyzed by quantitative PCR in 46 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded VS samples. Five samples were analyzed by targeted next-generation sequencing. Viral DNA was detected altogether in 24/46 (52%) tumor samples, mostly representing anelloviruses (46%). Our findings show frequent persistence of anelloviruses, considered normal virome, i

Evaluation of new self-learning techniques for the generation of criteria for differentiation of wide-QRS tachycardia in supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia.

This study presents a comparison of three different methods for differentiating between supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias with wide-QRS complex. One set of criteria, derived using classical statistical techniques, was compared with two new self-learning computer techniques: the artificial neural networks and the induction algorithm approach. By analyzing the results obtained in an independent test set, using these new techniques, the criteria defined by the classical method could be improved.

Integrated Bioinformatic Analysis and Experimental Validation for Crosstalk Among Various Forms of Cell Death in Spinal Cord Injury.

Neural cell death is pivotal in the pathogenesis of spinal cord injury (SCI). Recent studies have revealed a spectrum of cell death modalities in SCI, extending beyond traditional apoptosis and necrosis. Yet, the interplay between these diverse forms of cell death in SCI remains elusive. Is simultaneous intervention in various forms of cell death necessary for formulating effective therapeutic strategies for post-SCI neural cell death? In this study, we analyzed transcriptomic data from a public database, focusing on murine spinal cord tissue after SCI. This analysis identified 33 differential

Postnatal functional integrity of the brainstem auditory pathway in late preterm infants born of small-for-gestation age: how different from those born of appropriate-for-gestation.

It is unclear whether there is any postnatal abnormality in brainstem auditory function in late preterm small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants. We investigated the functional integrity of the brainstem auditory pathway at 4 months after term in late preterm SGA infants and defined differences from appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) infants. The maximum length sequence brainstem evoked response (MLS BAER) was recorded and analyzed in 24 SGA (birthweight < 3rd centile) infants and 28 AGA infants (birthweight > 10th centile). All infants were born at 33-36-week gestation without major perinat

Fetal Brain Damage in Human Fetuses with Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection: Histological Features and Viral Tropism.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) causes congenital neurological lifelong disabilities. To date, the neuropathogenesis of brain injury related to congenital HCMV (cCMV) infection is poorly understood. This study evaluates the characteristics and pathogenetic mechanisms of encephalic damage in cCMV infection. Ten HCMV-infected human fetuses at 21 weeks of gestation were examined. Specifically, tissues from different brain areas were analyzed by: (i) immunohistochemistry (IHC) to detect HCMV-infected cell distribution, (ii) hematoxylin-eosin staining to evaluate histological damage and (iii) real-tim

The influence of visual information on multi-muscle control during quiet stance: a spectral analysis approach.

Standing upright requires the coordination of neural drives to a large set of muscles involved in controlling human bipedal stance (i.e., postural muscles). The coordination may deteriorate in situations where standing is performed under more challenging circumstances, such as standing on a smaller base of support or not having adequate visual information. The present study investigates the role of common neural inputs in the organization of multi-muscle synergies and the effects of visual input disruption to this mechanism of control. We analyzed the strength and distribution of correlated ne

Multiple roles for Hedgehog signaling in zebrafish pituitary development.

The endocrine-secreting lobe of the pituitary gland, or adenohypophysis, forms from cells at the anterior margin of the neural plate through inductive interactions involving secreted morphogens of the Hedgehog (Hh), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) families. To better understand when and where Hh signaling influences pituitary development, we have analyzed the effects of blocking Hh signaling both pharmacologically (cyclopamine treatments) and genetically (zebrafish Hh pathway mutants). While current models state that Shh signaling from the oral ectoderm pat

Individual Differences in Reading Skill Are Related to Trial-by-Trial Neural Activation Variability in the Reading Network.

Recent work has suggested that variability in levels of neural activation may be related to behavioral and cognitive performance across a number of domains and may offer information that is not captured by more traditional measures that use the average level of brain activation. We examined the relationship between reading skill in school-aged children and neural activation variability during a functional MRI reading task after taking into account average levels of activity. The reading task involved matching printed and spoken words to pictures of items. Single trial activation estimates were

[Phenotypic plasticity of neural crest-derived melanocytes and Schwann cells].

Melanocytes, the pigmented cells of the skin, and the glial Schwann cells lining peripheral nerves are developmentally derived from an early and transient ectodermal structure of the vertebrate embryo, the neural crest, which is also at the origin of multiple neural and non-neural cell types. Besides melanocytes and neural cells of the peripheral nervous system, the neural crest cells give rise to mesenchymal cell types in the head, which form most of the craniofacial skeleton, dermis, fat tissue and vascular musculo-connective components. How such a wide diversity of differentiation fates is

The mechanism of the JNK signaling pathway in drug addiction : Author list.

Drug addiction is a multifactorial neurofunctional disorder influenced by a complex interplay of environmental, biological, and genetic factors. Recent studies have demonstrated that aberrant activation of the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway plays a critical role in the development of drug addiction. JNK, a member of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family, participates in neural development during embryogenesis and regulates neuronal proliferation and differentiation in adulthood, thereby maintaining the functional integrity of neural stem and progenitor cells and p
