Automatic and controlled processing in the corticocerebellar system.

During learning, performance changes often involve a transition from controlled processing in which performance is flexible and responsive to ongoing error feedback, but effortful and slow, to a state in which processing becomes swift and automatic. In this state, performance is unencumbered by the requirement to process feedback, but its insensitivity to feedback reduces its flexibility. Many properties of automatic processing are similar to those that one would expect of forward models, and many have suggested that these may be instantiated in cerebellar circuitry. Since hierarchically organ

The periaqueductal gray controls brainstem emotional motor systems including respiration.

Respiration is a motor system essential for the survival of the individual and of the species. Because of its vital significance, studies on respiration often assume that breathing takes place independent of other motor systems. However, motor systems generating vocalization, coughing, sneezing, vomiting, as well as parturition, ejaculation, and defecation encompass abdominal pressure control, which involves changes in the respiratory pattern. The mesencephalic periaqueductal gray (PAG) controls all these motor systems. It determines the level setting of the whole body by means of its very str

Optogenetic strategies to investigate neural circuitry engaged by stress.

Optogenetic techniques have given researchers unprecedented access to the function of discrete neural circuit elements and have been instrumental in the identification of novel brain pathways that become dysregulated in neuropsychiatric diseases. For example, stress is integrally linked to the manifestation and pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric illness, including anxiety, addiction and depression. Due to the heterogeneous populations of genetically and neurochemically distinct neurons in areas such as the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), as well as their substantial number of proj

Zonal distribution of perforant path cells in layer III of the entorhinal area projecting to CA1 and subiculum in the rat.

The distribution pattern of the cells that give rise to perforant path projections, including direct entorhino-CA1 and entorhino-subicular projections, was investigated in layer III of the medial and lateral entorhinal areas in the rat using retrograde labeling with horseradish peroxidase conjugated to wheat germ agglutinin and cholera toxin B subunit. Using two-dimensional unfolded maps of the entire hippocampal and parahippocampal fields, we found that cells projecting to a certain septotemporal level of CA1 and the subiculum were distributed in a band-like zone extending across the medial a

The nature of brain dysfunction in autism: functional brain imaging studies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have had a profound impact on the delineation of the neurobiologic basis for autism. Advances in fMRI technology for investigating functional connectivity, resting state connectivity, and a default mode network have provided further detail about disturbances in brain organization and brain-behavior relationships in autism to be reviewed in this article. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent fMRI studies have provided evidence of enhanced activation and connectivity of posterior, or parietal-occipital, networks and enhanced reliance on visuosp

Meet the brain neurophysiology.

The central nervous system is composed of two main types of cells: the most numerous are glia, which have a supportive, protective and regulatory role, and neurons, which are the primary computing element. Neurons transmit information as a pulsed electrical code which is conducted down a specialized process (axon) that connects with other neurons. Each neuron can connect with many others, and each neuron can receive input from many others. At the sites of connection (synapses), information is transmitted across a small gap; small molecules (neurotransmitters) are released from the end of the a

Tremorgenesis: a new conceptual scheme using reciprocally innervated circuit of neurons.

Neural circuits controlling fast movements are inherently unsteady as a result of their reciprocal innervation. This instability is enhanced by increased membrane excitability. Recent studies indicate that the loss of external inhibition is an important factor in the pathogenesis of several tremor disorders such as essential tremor, cerebellar kinetic tremor or parkinsonian tremor. Shaikh and colleagues propose a new conceptual scheme to analyze tremor disorders. Oscillations are simulated by changing the intrinsic membrane properties of burst neurons. The authors use a model neuron of Hodgkin

The reorganization of the motor system in primates after the loss of a limb.

As a result of an extensive search, we were able to obtain a limited number of macaque monkeys, New World squirrel monkeys, and prosimian galagos years after they had received a therapeutic amputation of a forelimb or hindlimb as a treatment for injury. Forelimb or hindlimb regions of primary motor cortex, M1, were stimulated in these primates with microelectrodes using amounts of current just sufficient to evoke a movement. Results were compared to those obtained from normal primates or from M1 contralateral to the intact limb in the same primates. In all cases, more sites in M1 contralateral

Quantitative analyses of principal and secondary compound parieto-occipital feedback pathways in cat.

The purpose of our study was to quantify the magnitude of principal and secondary pathways emanating from the middle suprasylvian (MS) region of visuoparietal cortex and terminating in area 18 of primary visual cortex. These pathways transmit feedback signals from visuoparietal cortex to primary visual cortex. (1) WGA-HRP was injected into area 18 to identify inputs from visual structures. In terms of numbers of neurons, feedback projections to area 18 from MS sulcal cortex (areas PMLS, AMLS and PLLS) comprise 26% of inputs from all visual structures. Of these neurons, between 21% and 34.9% ar

Role of the vestibular system in regulating respiratory muscle activity during movement.

More than 32,000 patients are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States per year and the disease is associated with very high mortality (1). Urgent need exists to develop novel clinically-translatable therapeutic strategies that can improve on the dismal survival statistics of pancreatic cancer patients. Although gene therapy in cancer has shown a tremendous promise, the major challenge is in the development of safe and effective delivery system, which can lead to sustained transgene expression. Gelatin is one of the most versatile natural biopolymer, widely used in food and pharma

A thalamo-cortical model of the executive attention system.

In a previous paper [Kilmer (1996) Neural Netw 9: 567-573] we developed a differential equation model of how a stable focus of attention could be maintained in a higher mammalian brain. The so-called TRC model consisted of interconnected modules, with each module comprised of a simple representations of parts of the reticular thalamic nucleus, specific thalamic nuclei, nonspecific thalamic nuclei, and cortex, together with the known excitatory and inhibitory interconnections between them. TRC was analyzed only for steady states under zero inputs. Here we analyze the behavior of TRC_2, a substa

Abnormalities of neural circuitry in Alzheimer's disease: hippocampus and cortical cholinergic innervation.

Severe pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD) results in marked disruption of cortical circuitry. Formation of neurofibrillary tangles, neuronal loss, decrease in dendritic extent, and synaptic depletion combine to halt communication among various cortical areas, resulting in anatomic isolation and fragmentation of many cortical zones. The clinical manifestation of this disruption is severe and debilitating cognitive dysfunction, often accompanied by psychiatric and behavioral disturbances and a diminished ability to perform activities of daily living. However, different cortical circuits are n

Dyslexic and category-specific aphasic impairments in a self-organizing feature map model of the lexicon.

DISLEX is an artificial neural network model of the mental lexicon. It was built to test computationally whether the lexicon could consist of separate feature maps for the different lexical modalities and the lexical semantics, connected with ordered pathways. In the model, the orthographic, phonological, and semantic feature maps and the associations between them are formed in an unsupervised process, based on cooccurrence of the lexical symbol and its meaning. After the model is organized, various damage to the lexical system can be simulated, resulting in dyslexic and category-specific apha

Probing the brain and spinal cord with neuropeptides in pathways related to pain and other functions.

The principles involved in the fabrication and use in vivo of antibody microprobes are described. These devices have shown that immunoreactive (ir)-substance P and ir-neurokinin A are released in the region of the substantia gelatinosa of the spinal cord when impulses arrive in nociceptors. Particularly with ir-neurokinin A, rapid inactivation does not appear to occur, resulting in the released neuropeptides accessing sites relatively remote from sites of release. Microprobes have also provided evidence that the sites accessed by ir-substance P are controlled by spinal cord peptidases and that

[Expansion and thickness of the visual cortex of microphthalmic mice and healthy Wistar animals].

In connection with our studies about the development and the structure of the visual system of the brain of normal and genetically microphthalmic mice in this paper we have investigated the extend of the visual cortex and the thickness of the primary visual cortex (area Oc1). The most important results are: The size of the surface of the neocortex and of the areas Oc1 and Oc2m shows no significant differences between the normal and the microphthalmic mice. The whole thickness of area Oc1 is at day 20 in the microphthalmic mice significantly greater than in normal animals. In the microphthalmic

Immunohistological localization of the neural adhesion molecules L1 and N-CAM in the developing hippocampus of the mouse.

The expression of the neural cell adhesion molecules L1 and N-CAM was investigated in developing postnatal mouse hippocampus by immunocytochemical techniques at the light and electron microscopic levels. In the 1, 8 and 21-day-old hippocampus, L1 was only observed on fasciculating axons. L1 was not detectable on dendrites and cell bodies of pyramidal cells, granule cells and interneurons in any of the hippocampal regions studied. Also, synapses were never found to be L1-immunoreactive either pre- or postsynaptically. L1 was not detectable at contacts between astrocytes and axons. Polyclonal N-
