Prevalence of bipolar disorder in panic disorder patients in the Japanese population.

BACKGROUND: We examined the rate of bipolar I (BPD-I) and bipolar II disorders (BPD-II) in panic disorder (PD) patients, and compared clinic … uding the State Trait Anxiety Inventory-Trait scale, the Anxiety Sensitivity Index, and the Revised Neuroticism-Extraversion- Openness Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R). RESULTS: We found that 22.34% of the PD patients had BPD (BPD-I: 5.24%, BPD-II: 17.10%). PD patients with BPD-I showed higher prevalence and severity of suicide risk, trait anxiety, anxiety s …

Toward interaction of affective and cognitive contributors to creativity in bipolar disorders: a controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced creativity in bipolar disorder patients may be related to affective and cognitive phenomena. METHODS: 32 bipolar disorder patients (BP), 21 unipolar major depressive disorder patients (MDD), 22 creative controls (CC), and 42 healthy controls (HC) (all euthymic) completed the Revised Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Personality Inventory (NEO), the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A), the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI); the Barron-Welsh Art Scale (BWAS), the Adjective Check List Creative Personality Scale, and the …

Low vagal activity as mediating mechanism for the relationship between personality factors and gastric symptoms in functional dyspepsia.

Low vagal tone may represent a mediating mechanism for relationships between personality and symptoms of functional dyspepsia (FD) through a … y, and reported symptoms. Symptoms were predicted by trait anxiety (STAI-TR), depression (BDI), and neuroticism (EPQ-N). Poor vagal tone was related to neuroticism (EPQ-N). Poor motility was best explained by task-related state dysphoria (SACL-STR).

Origins of adulthood personality: The role of adverse childhood experiences.

We test whether adverse childhood experiences - exposure to parental maltreatment and its indirect effect on health - are associated with age 30 personality traits. We use rich longitudinal data from a large, representative cohort of young US Americans and exploit differences across siblings to control for the confounding influences of shared environmental and genetic factors. We find that maltreatment experiences are significantly and robustly associated with neuroticism, conscientiousness, and openness to experience, but not with agreeableness and extraversion. High levels of neuroticism are…

Anxiety sensitivity in adolescents with somatoform autonomic dysfunction and adolescents with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

Anxiety sensitivity is defined as a belief that anxiety or fear may cause illness, embarrassment, or additional anxiety. The main purpose of this study was to find out if there were differences among adolescents with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, adolescents with somatoform autonomic dysfunction and their healthy peers in different aspects of psychological functioning and anxiety sensitivity. The sample consisted of 93 subjects, aged 12 to 16. Hamburg Neuroticism and Extraversion Scale, Child Behaviour Checklist and Childhood Anxiety Sensitivity Index were administrated. The adolescents…

Psychological factors associated with emotional responses to receiving genetic risk information.

This study identified levels of distress, and predictors of levels of distress, in women undergoing assessment for genetic risk of breast/ovarian cancer based on their family history. It comprised a cohort study following 154 women who completed questionnaires at entry into a cancer genetic assessment programme and following risk provision. Independent significant associates of anxiety following risk provision were age, neuroticism, feeling hopeless about developing cancer, a perceived lack of control over developing cancer, lack of a social confidant, and a coping response involving acceptanc…

Association between broadly defined bulimia nervosa and drug use disorders: common genetic and environmental influences.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has shown an association between bulimia (BN) and drug use disorders (DUD). The purpose of the present study was to investigate possible influences on the comorbidity between BN and DUD. METHOD: Participants included 490 monozygotic and 354 dizygotic female twins and 930 females from opposite sex pairs. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to test shared correlates and mediators. Bivariate twin analyses were used to investigate the contribution of genes and environment to the correlation between BN and DUD. RESULTS: Depression, neuroticism, and childho…

Effects of state and trait factors on nightmare frequency.

In a new approach, this study compared the effects of trait and state factors on nightmare frequency in a non-clinical sample. Although neuroticism and boundary thinness were related to nightmare frequency, regression analyses indicated that the trait measures did not add to the variance explained by the state measures. This finding supports the so-called continuity hypothesis of dreaming, i. e., nightmares reflect negative waking-life experiences. Second, the moderate relationship between nightmare frequency and poor sleep quality was partly explained by the day-time measures of neuroticism a…

Cognitive vulnerability to depression: an investigation of two hypotheses.

Two hypotheses concerning cognitive vulnerability to depression were examined. One suggested that there are persistent individual differences in cognitive processing related to neuroticism which predispose to depression. The other suggested that individuals in whom depressogenic processes are activated by mildly depressed mood are particularly vulnerable to becoming more seriously depressed. Compared to women who had never met Research Diagnostic Criteria for depressive disorders, women who had recovered from such disorders scored higher on measures of depression as an enduring characteristic;…

Mediators of age differences in well-being and psychological distress across adulthood.

OBJECTIVES: Aging is associated with improvements in well-being and reductions in psychological distress. However, little is known about why this occurs. This study explored candidate psychological variables that may explain age differences in mental health. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data of 5712 Canadians aged 18-101 to explore associations between age and mental health, and then to investigate whether basic psychological needs (BPNs), loneliness, perceived control, mindfulness, optimism, and neuroticism mediated age's relationship with well-being and distress. RESULTS: Each variable…

The Effect of Weight Stigma on Adolescent Health: Mediating and Moderating Roles of Social Support and Personality Traits.

Weight stigma is a common psychosocial stressor among adolescents and an important determinant of mental and physical well-being. However, t … d somatization. Positive indirect effects of weight stigma on health outcomes were observed through neuroticism, family support, and teacher support. Frequent stigmatization predicted lower levels of perceived social support and higher neuroticism, which in turn predicted poorer health outcomes.
