Nodal combined blue nevus and benign nevus cells in multiple axillary sentinel nodes in a patient with breast carcinoma: report of a case.

Combined blue nevus and benign nevus cells were identified in the same sentinel lymph node. Blue nevus alone was also present in an additional sentinel lymph node in the same axilla in a patient who underwent needle localization, wide local excision, and sentinel lymph node biopsy for her pT1cN1mi(sn)M(na) invasive duct carcinoma of the breast. Of the 4 sentinel lymph nodes, 1 showed micrometastasis and 2 other lymph nodes showed blue nevus involving the capsule and trabeculae of the nodes. The patient had no significant previous clinical history of any skin tumors and had a negative clinical …

Agminate and plaque-type blue nevus combined with lentigo, associated with follicular cyst and eccrine changes: a variant of speckled lentiginous nevus.

Agminate and plaque-type blue nevi are rarely described. We report the occurrence of such a type of blue nevus associated with eccrine changes and a follicular cyst all arising on a macular brown background in a 38-year-old man. The patient presented numerous blue papules and a plaque, overlapping a light tan patch present since birth, on his left thigh. In addition, within the plaque, 3 papules, discharging at intervals a serous fluid, were present. Since the lesion hardened and enlarged, it was surgically excised. Histologic findings revealed a lentigo pattern of the epidermis, corresponding…

Compound blue nevus: a variant of blue nevus with an additional junctional dendritic component. A clinical, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical study of six cases.

We studied six cases of heavily pigmented melanocytic lesions with features of blue nevi within the dermis, but with an additional junctional dendritic component. This compound variant of blue nevus is an uncommon lesion that has not been previously identified as a distinct histologic entity. Immunoperoxidase staining for S100 protein and counterstaining with azure B distinguished the presence of melanocytes among numerous melanophages within the dermis. The compound variant of blue nevus can be distinguished histologically from combined blue nevus, pigmented spindle cell nevus, malignant mela…

Human nevocellular nevus cells are surrounded by basement membrane components. Immunohistologic studies of human nevus cells and melanocytes in vivo and in vitro.

Dermal nevus cells in the skin are surrounded by electron-dense deposits resembling a basement membrane (BM), and epidermal melanocytes rest on the epidermal BM. Using antibodies directed against various BM components, we have determined that the BM-like structure surrounding nevus cells in vivo contains type IV collagen, laminin, and BM-1 proteoglycan, analogous to BM throughout the body, but not bullous pemphigoid antigen or epidermolysis bullosa acquisita antigen that are keratinocyte-associated proteins present in the epidermal BM. Moreover, in vitro, both nevus cells and melanocytes deriv…

Exploring the potential of intradermal platelet-rich plasma in treating acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macule (Hori's nevus): A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Hori's nevus is a common and challenging dermatological condition, often complicated by post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation following treatment. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of hyperpigmentation disorders such as melasma and periorbital darkening. Given the benefits and minimally invasive nature of PRP treatments, exploring its application in managing Hori's nevus through further investigation is worthwhile. AIMS: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of intradermal PRP therapy for the treatment of Hori's nevus. METHODS: Ten female pati…

Systematized organoid epidermal nevus with eccrine differentiation, multiple facial and oral congenital scars, gingival synechiae, and blepharophimosis: a novel epidermal nevus syndrome.

Epidermal nevus syndrome is a clinically variable and genetically heterogeneous group of mosaic conditions characterized by the concurrence of extensive epidermal nevus with additional cutaneous and extracutaneous manifestations. This term groups together well-characterized clinical entities, as well as dozens of apparently unique associations, which need further delineation. We report on a 23-year-old woman presenting the previously undescribed combination of widespread eccrine proliferation, multiple facial and oral pox-like lesions, gingival synechiae, blepharophimosis, body asymmetry, and …

Congenital phimosis with foreskin discoloration revealing pigmented spitz nevus.

Pigmented spitz nevus is a rare benign melanocytic lesion that may clinically mimic malignant melanoma, particularly when occurring at unusual sites such as the genitalia. We report a case of a child presenting with congenital phimosis associated with blackish discolouration of the foreskin. Circumcision was performed and histopathological examination of the excised foreskin revealed a pigmented spitz nevus, a rare benign melanocytic lesion. This case highlights the importance of careful evaluation of pigmented lesions of the foreskin and the role of histopathology in establishing a definitive …

Bilateral nevus of Ota series treated with picosecond laser.

BACKGROUND: Nevus of Ota (NO) "oculodermal melanocytosis" is prevalent in Asians. Bilateral nevus of Ota (BNO) is a rare condition and comprises 5% of the cases seen. Picosecond laser (PS) is useful in treating various cutaneous benign pigmentary disorders including NO. We analyzed the clinical data on BNO in Vietnamese patients and evaluated the efficacy of treatment of the 1064 nm Nd:YAG picosecond laser (PSNY). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine Vietnamese patients (ages 2-67 years, mean 23.36 ± 17.5) with BNO received at least 3 treatment sessions with 1064-nm PSNY (4-5 mm spot size; 1.5-2…

Histopathological Differences Between De Novo and Nevus-Associated Melanoma.

Background/Objectives: Cutaneous melanoma arises de novo in the majority of cases; 20-30% develop from pre-existing nevi. Differentiating nevus-associated melanoma (NAM) from de novo melanoma (DNM) is important for understanding melanomagenesis, risk stratification, and prognostic assessment. The objective of this study was to compare the demographic, clinical, and histopathological characteristics of NAM and DNM in a large single-institution retrospective cohort. Methods: A retrospective, longitudinal, observational study was conducted at the Department of Pathological Anatomy, Cluj-Napoca Co…

Oral Sirolimus Treatment for HRAS-Related Epidermal Nevus Syndrome.

This is the case of a 10-year-old female with HRAS-related epidermal nevus syndrome with extensive and severe cutaneous involvement treated with oral sirolimus. The patient had progressively enlarging verrucous periorbital plaques involving the eyelids, resulting in lagophthalmos and threatening vision. Oral sirolimus rapidly improved the cutaneous lesions and resolved the lagophthalmos. This case of a patient treated with oral sirolimus for HRAS-related epidermal nevus syndrome suggests that therapies targeting the mTOR pathway may indirectly affect the RAS/MAPK pathway.

Epidemiologic characteristics of de novo versus nevus-associated melanoma.

The exact role of nevi in the development of melanoma is not yet completely understood, and it remains unknown whether de novo and nevus-associated melanoma (NAM) constitute distinct biological entities. A few studies have documented differences in histological and clinical characteristics between de novo and NAMs; however, data from Southern Europe are lacking. This study examined epidemiological and clinical data of patients who were followed up at the Melanoma Reference Center of the General Hospital of Athens G. Gennimatas from 2022 to 2024 and had been diagnosed with primary skin melanoma…

Understanding choroidal nevus risk factors for transformation into melanoma.

A choroidal nevus is a common intraocular tumor in the United States, found in approximately 5% of Caucasian adults. The three main risks of melanocytic choroidal nevus include vision loss from a subfoveal nevus, development of subretinal fluid, and transformation of nevus into melanoma, a malignant counterpart. We explore clinical risk factors that predict benign melanocytic choroidal nevus transformation into a malignant choroidal melanoma. Based on a large analysis of 2,355 cases that were monitored longitudinally using multimodal imaging, the most recent list of clinical features includes …

Sebaceous nevus of Jadassohn: review and clinical-surgical approach.

BACKGROUND: Nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn is defined as a rare congenital malformation characterized as a non-hereditary hamartoma of the adnexal structures of the skin. Its etiology is not yet well understood, but it is believed to be related to post-zygotic mutations in the HRAS, NRAS and KRAS genes. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical manifestation of nevus sebaceous, as well as the main management techniques addressed in the medical literature. Moreover, the present study discusses a case report of a congenital linear nevus in the left retroauricular region found in a male patient, without…
