A thermochemical-hydrodynamic model of the production of trace species by electrical discharges has been used to estimate the rates of fixation of C and N by lightning in the primitive atmosphere. Calculations for various possible mixtures of CH4, CO2, CO, N2, H2, and H2O reveal that the prime species produced were probably HCN and NO and that the key parameter determining the rates of fixation was the ratio of C atoms to O atoms in the atmosphere. A study of urea and albumin metabolism was carried out in a patient with the stagnant loop syndrome and in a control subject using radioisotopic and stable isotopic techniques. The patient had a higher rate of urea synthesis, urea hydrolysis in the gut, and of incorporation of recycled urea nitrogen into albumin. Although only a small proportion (0.4%) of the urea nitrogen available was used for albumin synthesis and this constituted only 0.8% of the daily nitrogen requirement for this purpose, the reutilization of nitrogen was relatively much greater than was observed in the control study.

Biological nitrogen removal is often inhibited under low-temperature conditions due to reduced microbial activity and impaired metabolic processes. A novel cold-resistant bacterium, Acinetobacter pragensis FX1, was isolated and exhibited efficient nitrogen removal capacity across a broad temperature range of 5-30 °C.
