Speculations on the origin and evolution of metabolism.

An autotrophic origin of metabolism is described, which requires clays, transition state metals, disulfide and dithiols, U.V. and cyanide ion. A general scheme is proposed, involving the fixation of CO2 and N2, for the evolution of intermediary metabolism based on the evolution of a complex system from a simple one. The basic conclusion is that metabolism could have evolved from a simple environment rather than from a complex one.

Inhibition mechanisms of nanoplastics and ofloxacin on marine Synechococcus: Evidence from coupled physiological and transcriptomic assessments.

The co-occurrence of nanoplastics (NPs) and antibiotics in marine environments poses complex threats to primary producers, yet the multi-level mechanisms of their combined toxicity remain poorly understood. In this study, we systematically investigated the physiological, biochemical, and transcriptomic responses of the marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. WH8102 to single and combined exposure of polystyrene NPs and ofloxacin (OFL). Interestingly, Independent Action analysis based on population growth indicated an apparent antagonistic interaction, which may be associated with altered OFL a

Trait-niche relationships accompany the increasing topological prominence of abundant bacteria along a glacial-lake chronosequence.

Accelerated glacial retreat driven by global warming has rapidly expanded glacial lakes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), creating natural … increased predicted recalcitrant-to-labile carbon degradation gene ratio and a decreased predicted nitrogen fixation-to-nitrification gene ratio. Topological analysis further revealed that abundant taxa were disproportionately represented among highly central and topologically identified putative keystone positions, and this representation increased along the grad …

Lu2CrMnO6-Pm-g-C3N4 supported dendritic nanosilica as a recyclable green catalyst for eco-friendly synthesis of N-[(2-hydroxyethoxy)carbonyl] glycine from carbon dioxide.

The rational design of heterogeneous catalysts with hierarchical nanostructures and large surface areas is crucial for enhancing active site accessibility and improving catalytic efficiency. In this context, we report the synthesis of a novel, recyclable nanocatalyst composed of Lu₂CrMnO₆ nanoparticles anchored onto pyrimidine grafted graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (Pm-g-C₃N₄), which are uniformly immobilized on dendritic fibrous nanosilica (DFNS). The integration of DFNS provides a highly porous, open channel framework rich in surface hydroxyl groups, facilitating strong chemical bonding

Light-Heat Interactions in Photothermal Ammonia Synthesis: A Diagnostic Framework for Mechanistic Interpretation.

Photothermal ammonia synthesis has emerged as a promising route to couple nitrogen fixation with solar energy, yet the mechanistic origin of light-assisted activity remains difficult to establish because illumination can contribute through heat generation, photoexcited carriers, or both simultaneously. This Review examines recent photothermal NH3 synthesis systems from a diagnostic perspective. Representative Ru- and Fe-based materials are discussed within four photothermal regimes: photo-driven thermocatalysis, photo-assisted thermocatalysis, photothermal co-catalysis, and thermally assisted …

Regulation of the iron-deficiency response by IMA/FEP peptide.

Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient for plant growth and development, participating in many significant biological processes including photosynthesis, respiration, and nitrogen fixation. Although abundant in the earth's crust, most Fe is oxidized and difficult for plants to absorb under aerobic and alkaline pH conditions. Plants, therefore, have evolved complex means to optimize their Fe-acquisition efficiency. In the past two decades, regulatory networks of transcription factors and ubiquitin ligases have proven to be essential for plant Fe uptake and translocation. Recent studies in Arab…

The Arabidopsis Iron-Sulfur (Fe-S) Cluster Gene MFDX1 Plays a Role in Host and Nonhost Disease Resistance by Accumulation of Defense-Related Metabolites.

Until recently, genes from the iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster pathway were not known to have a role in plant disease resistance. The Nitrogen Fixation S (NIFS)-like 1 (NFS1) and Mitochondrial Ferredoxin-1 (MFDX1) genes are part of a set of 27 Fe-S cluster genes induced after infection with host and nonhost pathogens in Arabidopsis. A role for AtNFS1 in plant immunity was recently demonstrated. In this work, we showed that MFDX1 is also involved in plant defense. More specifically, Arabidopsis mfdx1 mutants were compromised for nonhost resistance against Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci, and showed …

Distal heme pocket regulation of ligand binding and stability in soybean leghemoglobin.

Leghemoglobins facilitate diffusion of oxygen through root tissue to a bacterial terminal oxidase in much the same way that myoglobin transports oxygen from blood to muscle cell mitochondria. Leghemoglobin serves an additional role as an oxygen scavenger to prevent inhibition of nitrogen fixation. For this purpose, the oxygen affinity of soybean leghemoglobin is 20-fold greater than myoglobin, resulting from an 8-fold faster association rate constant combined with a 3-fold slower dissociation rate constant. Although the biochemical mechanism used by myoglobin to bind oxygen has been described …

Description of two nitrogen-fixing bacteria, Azospirillum mesophilum sp. nov. and Azospirillum terrae sp. nov., isolated from paddy soils.

Two novel aerobic, rod-shaped, motile bacterial strains, designated as sgz302134T and sgz301742T, were isolated from paddy soil in Fujian Province. Strains sgz302134T and sgz301742T shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with the type strains Azospirillum isscasi C340-1T (98.2%) and Azospirillum thiophilum DSM 21654T (97.4%), respectively. The phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that two strains clustered with members of the genus Azospirillum. Growth of strains sgz302134T and sgz301742T was observed at 10-45 °C, pH 5.0-9.5 and 0-0.5% (w/v) NaCl and 15-37

Complete genome sequence of the N2-fixing broad host range endophyte Klebsiella pneumoniae 342 and virulence predictions verified in mice.

We report here the sequencing and analysis of the genome of the nitrogen-fixing endophyte, Klebsiella pneumoniae 342. Although K. pneumoniae 342 is a member of the enteric bacteria, it serves as a model for studies of endophytic, plant-bacterial associations due to its efficient colonization of plant tissues (including maize and wheat, two of the most important crops in the world), while maintaining a mutualistic relationship that encompasses supplying organic nitrogen to the host plant. Genomic analysis examined K. pneumoniae 342 for the presence of previously identified genes from other bact

A 3D-printed algal-bacterial microreactor for photobiological hydrogen production coupled with actual wastewater treatment.

Microalgae-driven photosynthetic hydrogen production has emerged as a promising approach to tackle the global energy crisis and reduce carbon emissions. Simultaneously, microalgae can remove phosphorus and nitrogen from wastewater while sequestering CO2 during hydrogen production. However, challenges such as the intrinsic oxygen sensitivity of hydrogenases and the relatively low hydrogen productivity remain major hurdles that constrain the process viability of microalgae for combined wastewater treatment and hydrogen production.
