BACKGROUND: Exercise intolerance is a defining characteristic of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). A marked rise in pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) during exertion is pathognomonic for HFpEF and is thought to be a key cause of exercise intolerance.
