Nutritional interventions for individuals with bulimia nervosa.

Many physical and psychological effects of bulimia nervosa are caused by the patient's partial starvation and chaotic nutritional cycle. Attention should thus be initially directed to correcting nutritional deficiencies and abnormal eating patterns, and providing dietary counselling. Nevertheless, very little has been written about the nutritional management of this eating disorder. Nutritional counselling for bulimia patients is reviewed in this paper. Current knowledge about nutritional therapy and its efficacy, goals and objectives is presented, along with recommendations used in treatment

Mortality and morbidity pattern in measles in Tanga District, Tanzania.

Two hundred and fifty children, suffering from measles were studied for morbidity and mortality in Tanga District Hospital in Tanzania. The highest incidence of measles was in the second half of the first year of childhood (40%). Mortality was directly related to the nutritional status and associated complications. Medical care at the health centre level by medical auxiliaries during the acute phase and the problem of poor weight gain on follow-up are discussed.

Impact of Sarcopenia and Nutritional Status on Survival of Patients with Aortic Dissection: A Scoping Review.

Sarcopenia and the patient's nutritional status play an important role in the course of many cardiovascular diseases, including aortic dissection. Disorders of muscle mass and function can affect the body's ability to recover and the tolerance of surgical and pharmacological treatment. Background/Objectives: In patients with aortic dissection, the presence of sarcopenia may significantly worsen the prognosis and reduce the chances of survival. Weakening of muscle strength and metabolic disorders associated with poor nutrition negatively affect the body's ability to regenerate after surgical in

Nutritional strategies to manage postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and its comorbidities: A narrative review.

BackgroundPostural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a heterogeneous disorder of the autonomic nervous system characterized by orthostatic intolerance and involvement of multiple organ systems. It commonly coexists with conditions such as hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS), mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), and a spectrum of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. These overlapping conditions frequently manifest with shared GI symptoms such as nausea, bloating, abdominal pain, early satiety, and altered bowel habits that can substantially compromise nutritional status and quality

Cardiac and metabolic safety profile of antipsychotics in youths: A WHO safety database analysis.

A significant heterogeneity prevails in antipsychotics (APs) safety monitoring recommendations. Youths are deemed more vulnerable to cardiometabolic side effects. We aimed to assess age-dependent reporting of cardiac and metabolic disorders in youths, relying on the WHO safety database (VigiBase®). VigiBase® was queried for all reports of cardiac, glucose, lipid and nutritional disorders involving APs. Patients <18 years were classified as pediatric population. Disproportionality analyses relied on the Information Component (IC): the positivity of the lower end of its 95 % confidence interval

Sex- and gender-based medicine in pediatric nutrition.

Consistent evidence increasingly highlights the significance of integrating sex and gender medicine to ensure a precision approach according to individual patient needs. Gender discrepancies emerge across various areas, even from pediatric age. The importance of recognizing these differences in pediatric nutrition is critical for the development of targeted nutritional strategies and interventions, particularly in cases of associated pathologies, including obesity, metabolic-associated fatty liver disease, eating disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease. The review highlights the biological a

Early Life Nutrition and Non Communicable Disease.

The origin of some non communicable disease (NCDs) is in early life. Evidence has shown that early life nutrition is associated with the risk of developing chronic non communicable diseases. Pregnancy and infancy are the most critical stages that influence the risks of NCDs in childhood and adult life. Prenatal maternal undernutrition and low birth weight lead to obesity and increase the risk factors of cardiovascular disease and diabetes later in life. Nutrition is one of the easily modifiable environmental factors that may affect outcome of pregnancy, trajectory of growth, and immune system

[Clinical Experience with Nutrition and Anticoagulation Therapy for a Patient with a 30 cm Residual Jejunum].

Patients with short bowel syndrome experience malabsorption and digestive disorders. They are unable to maintain adequate nutrition by the oral or enteral route alone, and their requirements for liquids, electrolytes, nutrients, microelements, vitamins, etc., are not completely met. Managing the nutritional needs of these patients is important. Another concern is these patients' inability to absorb medication, because the small intestine that is shortened in short bowel syndrome is the principal site of drug absorption. Here, we report a case of a 74-year-old woman with a 30 cm residual jejunu

Nutrition and cancer in children.

The information generated to date regarding the nutritional status of children with cancer indicates that malnutrition is seen in patients in the later stages of their malignant disease or is iatrogenic because of their intensive therapy. Malnourished children suffer from inadequate growth, including the potential of delayed cerebral development, and they are more susceptible to infection. Nutritional therapy has been shown to reverse the malnutrition independent of the cancer treatment. In doing so, the nutritional support aids in the delivery of and tolerance to the antitumor therapy. What i

Nutritional Therapy for Patients with Esophageal Cancer.

Malnutrition develops in 79% patients with esophageal cancer. Thus, these patients represent a group of cancer patients, which is the most nutritionally compromised. Dysphagia and more than 10% loss of body weight are already present at the time of diagnosis. Treatments for esophageal cancer contribute significantly to the development of malnutrition. This paper describes the nutritional treatment of patients and nutritional strategies in patients with dysphagia and other nutritional problems that accompany the treatment of patients with esophageal cancer. Here are shown the types and methods

Nutrition in the perioperative patient.

The association of malnutrition with surgical morbidity and mortality is well recognized. The question of whether this relationship is causal or simply an association in sick patients has been hotly debated. The field of nutrition support has grown out of the belief that correcting malnutrition will modify associated risks for poor outcome. It has been easier to substantiate this belief in some clinical situations than in others. The evidence for nutrition support during the perioperative period is reviewed and recommendations are made about where nutrition support is most useful and where it

Nutrition: its relationship to orthopedic infections.

The malnutrition of orthopedic surgical patients plays an important role in the development of complications, including infection. A high index of suspicion that malnutrition exists or will soon exist in patients who are subjected to significant stress, trauma, or surgery will lead the clinician to take measures to avoid further protein calorie deficits and replenish the patient's nutritional needs. There are many pathways in which malnutrition causes a propensity for infection, and these have been discussed. Meeting the patient's nutritional needs should avoid some of the complications of inf

[Special aspects of malnutrition in geriatrics].

In 1992 people aged 65 years and over represented 11.9% (men) and 17.2% (women) of the Swiss population, and in 2000 the average 65-year-old man or woman can expect to live about 12 more years. Old age is characterized by multimorbidity, an accumulation of chronic conditions and diseases, and by social isolation. Multimorbidity and isolation (living alone) are the major risk factors for malnutrition. 30-60% of all persons aged 65 years and over show one or more subnormal nutritional parameters. The unspecific and oligosymptomatic clinical picture of malnutrition in the elderly often hinders an

Parenteral nutrition in obstetric patients.

PN is required to maintain or restore an anabolic state when oral enteral routes are not feasible. Despite 22 years of experience with PN, its use during pregnancy has only recently been reported. Most of this information is anecdotal but suggests that this mode of therapy is safe, effective, and occasionally lifesaving. PN during pregnancy has been used most often to provide adequate nutrition for those who suffer from prolonged hyperemesis or who have difficulty absorbing adequate nutrients because of such conditions as Crohn's disease. Nutrition in toddlers.

Toddlers make a transition from dependent milk-fed infancy to independent feeding and a typical omnivorous diet. This stage is an important time for physicians to monitor growth using growth charts and body mass index and to make recommendations for healthy eating. Fat and cholesterol restriction should be avoided in children younger than two years. After two years of age, fat should account for 30 percent of total daily calories, with an emphasis on polyunsaturated fats. Toddlers should consume milk or other dairy products two or three times daily, and sweetened beverages should be limited to
