Occupational noise as a cardiovascular risk factor.

The results from routine medical screening of 806 workers in a very wide range of different occupational activities were analysed in order to assess the relationship between blood pressure and occupational exposure to noise. Blood pressure was measured for each worker by conventional methods. Noise exposure was estimated according to the main company activity and each worker's specific job, computing three categories of noise exposure: low, medium and high. Preliminary analysis of the data did not reveal any relationship between noise exposure and blood pressure. Nevertheless, when comparing t

Experiences of employees with arm, neck or shoulder complaints: a focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Many people suffer from complaints of the arm, neck or shoulder (CANS). CANS causes significant work problems, including absenteeism (sickness absence), presenteeism (decreased work productivity) and, ultimately, job loss. There is a need for intervention programs for people suffering from CANS. Management of symptoms and workload, and improving the workstyle, could be important factors in the strategy to deal with CANS. The objective of this study is to evaluate the experienced problems of employees with CANS, as a first step in an intervention mapping process aimed at adaptation

Development of an instrument for assessing workstyle in checkout cashier work (BAsIK).

Checkout cashier work consists of handling a large number of items during a work shift, which implies repetitive movements of the shoulders, arms and hands/wrists, and a high work rate. The work is associated with a high prevalence of disorders in the neck and upper extremity. The concept of workstyle explains how ergonomic and psychosocial factors interact in the development of work-related upper extremity disorders. The aim of the project was to develop an instrument for the occupational health services to be used in the efforts to prevent upper extremity disorders in checkout cashier work.

Concerns of Capitol Hill staff workers after bioterrorism: focus group discussions of authorities' response.

Systematic studies of mental health effects of bioterrorism on exposed populations have not been carried out. Exploratory focus groups were conducted with an exposed population to provide qualitative data and inform empirical research. Five focus groups of 28 political worker volunteers were conducted 3 months after the October 15, 2001, anthrax attack on Capitol Hill. More than 2000 transcribed focus group passages were categorized using qualitative software. The category with the most items was authorities' response (23% passages), and much of this discussion pertained to communication by au

Insight inTo Stress and POOping on Work TIME (ITS POO TIME): Protocol for a Web-Based, Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Long occupational working hours and shift work are common in high-, middle-, and lower-income economies. Bowel movement frequency and stool form in occupational settings may be important markers of stressful working conditions as well as diurnal gut microbiota action, gastrointestinal discomfort, and disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). Characterizing DGBI in shift and nonshift workers could help identify the impact of diurnal work patterns on workers' physical and mental health, including anxiety related to bowel movements. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to outline the Insight

Assessment of sensory impairment of the upper limb post-stroke by occupational therapists within the acute setting: A mixed methods study exploring current clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: Sensory impairment of the upper limb is common after stroke and negatively impacts a stroke survivor's recovery. The acute phase is a critical time for the identification of post-stroke somatosensory impairments and occupational therapists have a key role in the acute stroke setting. Sensory assessment and treatment practices of occupational therapists working in acute stroke settings are largely unknown. This study aims to describe current clinical practice and identify the barriers and enablers for the assessment of sensory impairment in patients post stroke within acute stroke

A comparison of the burden and resultant risk associated with occupational falls from a height and on the same level in Australia.

Occupational falls are one of the leading causes of occupational injury and death internationally. This study described the nature of occupational falls following an analysis of workers compensation data in Western Australia. Frequencies, proportions and incidence rates were calculated following mechanism, gender, age and industry stratification. The natures of injury and bodily locations affected were compared between mechanisms of fall. Industry incidence rates were ranked and their corresponding proportions reported. Cost and lost time were described and risk scores for each burden type (in

Occupational spinal cord injury: demographic and etiologic differences from non-occupational injuries.

Most spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are the result of motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). There are no published reports specifically addressing SCIs that occur in the workplace. We report a cohort survey study examining the frequency and etiology of SCI in the workplace. Through a cooperative program, an evaluation of all SCIs seen in Colorado during a 5 1/2-year period (January 1, 1986 through June 6, 1991) is presented. We report a detailed analysis of specific data of all SCIs occurring in the workplace. There were a total of 566, with 74 (13.1%) due to injuries that occurred during the course of

Occupational Noise Exposure, Bilateral High-Frequency Hearing Loss, and Blood Pressure.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between occupational noise exposure and blood pressure using self-reported occupational exposure and bilateral high-frequency hearing loss. METHODS: This study included 4548 participants aged 20 to 69 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999 to 2004. On the basis of self-reported exposure status, participants were divided into the current, former, or never exposed groups. Bilateral high-frequency hearing loss was defined as the average high-frequency hearing threshold at least 25 dB in both ears.

Beyond radiation dosimetry: metabolic burden and a possible healthy worker survivor pattern in the medical imaging workforce.

OBJECTIVE: Current occupational health protocols in radiology remain strongly focused on ionizing radiation while underemphasizing metabolic health concerns potentially associated with sedentary and shift-based occupational environments. This study examined the prevalence of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in medical imaging professionals and evaluated whether the observed tenure-related pattern was more consistent with early-career occupational burden and possible survivor-selection processes than with a simple linear cumulative-risk model. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was c
