BACKGROUND: Carpet vipers (Echis) are found across the semiarid regions of west, north, and east Africa; west, south, and east Arabia; parts of Iran and Afghanistan north to Uzbekistan; and in Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka. BACKGROUND: Until the beginning of the 20th century, 'hysterical scoliosis' could be considered an established diagnosis in Middle Europe's German-speaking countries. The responsible physicians claimed that certain cases of scoliosis were caused solely by psychological factors, and they did not distinguish between real scoliosis (e.g. with neuromuscular cause) and abnormal posture caused by psychological reasons. Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease. Despite aggressive national initiatives to eradicate measles, outbreaks have occurred in recent years. We report three infants who presented to a tertiary care hospital in Muscat, Oman, in 2019 with measles and then developed pneumonitis, received intensive care treatment and made full recoveries. Case reports are presented of two patients from Oman who developed myiasis in the palate. Both suffered from cerebral palsy and had incompetent lips, anterior open bite and very poor oral hygiene. Both patients had denuded areas of hard palate anteriorly. In both cases large numbers of maggots were found under the surrounding mucoperiosteam. Removal of the maggots and debridement resulted in resolution of the condition.

Cyclosporine A is an immunosuppressant drug known to cause several side effects. One of the most common side effects is hypertrichosis, with a rare presentation of hair repigmentation rarely presenting. No vaccines are currently licensed to prevent Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) infection, which can cause mild self-limiting clinical signs or severe, often fatal hemorrhagic fever disease. Here we continued investigations into the utility of a single-dose virus replicon particle (VRP) vaccine regimen by assessing protection against Turkey or Oman strains of CCHFV. We found that all mice were completely protected from disease, supporting broad applicability of this platform for CCHFV prevention.

Hair heterochromia involves the presence of two different non-artificially induced colours of hair in the same individual which can be due to either iron deficiency anaemia, genetic mutations or mosaicism. We report a six-month old male infant who presented to the Department of Dermatology, Saham Hospital, Saham, Oman, in 2013 with focal scalp hair heterochromia without any detectable underlying abnormalities. The area of heterochromia was still noticeable at a one-year follow-up.

Sinus venosus atrial septal defects present a wide variety of anatomical features and are frequently associated with partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage of one or more right pulmonary veins. Surgical correction used to be the standard treatment. In recent times, transcatheter correction of superior sinus venosus atrial septal defects has come into vogue. The transcatheter closure of these defects with covered stents at a tertiary care centre in Oman between 2018 and 2023 is reported.
