One of the most important breakthroughs in the understanding of bone biology was the identification of the role of cytokines in bone remodelling including the alveolar bone exposed to the effect of mechanical forces during orthodontic treatment. Since bone remodelling is associated, in its early phase, with inflammation of the surrounding tissue, the hypothesis has been suggested on the role of proinflammatory cytokines in the process of bone remodelling, primarily IL-1beta, IL-6 and TNFalpha. These cytokines function as response mediators in the acute phase of inflammation, as well as in the

Gingival recession is a complex phenomenon. Root coverage results can be predictable regarding to the anatomy of the area. This includes the width of keratinized and attached gingiva, the buccolingual dimension of both soft tissue and alveolar bone, and the position and angulation of the teeth. If the tooth is out of the envelope of the alveolar process, with alveolar bone dehiscence and low thickness of the marginal soft tissue, the recession risk is important. Many techniques have been introduced to treat gingival recession. But lots of failures are linked to tooth position. An adequate orth

OBJECTIVES: A case of congenital macroglossia is reported. The most important sign of macroglossia is tongue protrusion through the lips. Tongue protrusion might influence skeletal growth and can cause anterior open bite, proclination of upper and lower incisors and development of diastemas.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 4 year-old female patient was diagnosed with congenital macroglossia. Parents referred an abnormal tongue dimension since birth and the development of a progressive anterior open bite. The treatment of macroglossia included tongue reduction by partial glossectomy. She was seen reg

UNLABELLED: The aim of our study was to investigate the prevalence of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) during orthodontic treatment.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: the study investigated all the patients receiving orthodontic treatment in the dentofacial orthopedic department in Casablanca in the course of the different stages of treatment over a 4-month period. We looked for a possible association between the presence of at least one sign of TMD, the Helkimo anamnesis index, the clinical Helkimo index and the following factors: age, gender, extractions, or not, of premolars, duration, type and stag

A detailed clinical examination is important for early diagnosis of oral lesions in every dental specialty, including orthodontics, particularly because these patients are constantly checked during orthodontic treatment. This report describes 2 men receiving orthodontic treatment and who had swelling on the hard palate diagnosed as mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Both patients received appropriate treatment and had a good prognosis because of the rapid recognition of these oral lesions by their orthodontists.

This case report illustrates how an interdisciplinary team diagnosis led to occlusal correction of a significant postorthodontic malocclusion. The patient had received complete orthodontics twice previously, from different orthodontists. She could not close without pain or chew comfortably and was concerned about progressive gingival recession. A comprehensive clinical examination, occlusal analysis with diagnostic casts verified in centric relation, bite splint therapy, and full-mouth equilibration were completed prior to limited restorative dentistry. The patient has been comfortable with a …

Pericoronal lesions are undesirable for dental eruption, and they are always associated with unerupted teeth. Pericoronal lesions are common and are usually treated by extraction of the permanent tooth. Pericoronal hamartoma is a special type of pericoronal lesion, and little information about it is available in the orthodontic literature. This report presents a patient with pericoronal hamartoma on the mandibular left permanent first molar who had orthodontic treatment. Because of the similarity of the radiographic radiolucency of pericoronal hamartoma and other lesions, a differential diagno

Orthodontists routinely refer patients to oral surgeons or periodontists for exposure of impacted or ectopic teeth. Although other specialists perform these procedures, the orthodontist could have a legal responsibility to obtain informed consent, depending on how the referral orders are written. The purpose of this article is to discuss some considerations of the informed consent process for surgical exposure and alignment of impacted or ectopic teeth, and to suggest a template for an informed consent form for this use.

INTRODUCTION: Three main reasons are routinely cited to justify the provision of orthodontic treatment: improvement of facial and dental aesthetics and of dental health and function. However, association between malocclusions and periodontal condition is still controversial. The aim of the present study was to further investigate the correlation between certain orthodontic anomalies and periodontal condition.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: One hundred and one subjects were included in this study. Information regarding oral hygiene habits and accessibility to professional oral health care were obtained

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Documentation of dental and orthodontic implications of osteoglophonic dysplasia (OGD).
SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: Case report describing oral and dental manifestations of a female with OGD, aged 39 years, who was first documented three decades ago.
RESULTS: This rare genetic disorder manifests with gross stunting of stature, associated with severe craniofacial malformation and multiple unerupted teeth. Radiographically, multiple lucent lesions were present in the tubular bones and mandible as well as several impacted teeth.
CONCLUSION: We concluded that prosthetic dent

Patients with congenitally missing teeth (hypodontia) present with complex problems. Meeting their treatment needs requires a joint effort between the disciplines of orthodontics and restorative dentistry. There are a number of options available to restore space generated by missing teeth. In the majority of patients orthodontic treatment will be required before this space can be restored satisfactorily. The second part of this series reviews the orthodontic considerations for various options.

Distraction osteogenesis is a bone creating procedure that can contribute materially to the treatment of Class II dento-skeletal disorders where the mandible is under-sized. Still, the serious commitments this treatment demands and the unpredictability of its occlusal results oblige practitioners to pinpoint precisely the indications for its use. We now believe that distraction osteogenesis can beneficially be employed for: 1--Adults with Class II malocclusions, a small mandible, and a lack of harmony between tooth and jaw size. This bone growing technique makes it possible to treat these pati

Orthodontic unit, University College Hospital, Ibadan is young and in need of baseline data for effective planning. The main aim of this study was to determine the nature of orthodontic demands in the unit that could benefit from preventive and interceptive treatment so as to enhance treatment planning, teaching and further research. Consecutive patients who presented for treatment in the Unit between May 1997 and November 1999 were included in the study. The patients aged 5-19 years with mean age of 8.8 +/- 0.82 years. One hundred and twenty-one (60.5%) of the orthodontic cases that presented

Aarskog syndrome is a rare syndrome with a typical triad of facial, digital and genital characteristics. Orthodontic treatment of a patient with Aarskog syndrome has not been documented in literature till date. This case report shows that an individual with Aarskog syndrome can be an excellent orthodontic patient and should not be excluded from the general patient population. A stable occlusion can be achieved with acceptable profile and soft tissue contours in these patients as well.

The authors demonstrate their clinical experience in the methodology developed by them for surgical-orthodontic treatment of impacted teeth. The material is based on 34 patients - 21 women and 13 men for the period 1994 - 1997. The patients were treated by the following methodology: after surgical exposure of the impacted tooth a photo-composite devise for tooth-alveolar traction is fixed to the crown part of the tooth by photopolymerization. The methodology is illustrated with a case of a patient treated for an impacted canine tooth.
