Perianal involvement in Crohn's disease is common (< or = 50%), distressing, and frequently refractory to treatment. A mechanism for oxygen production involving the reaction of cation radicals with H2O2 was investigated. The rate of oxygen production by peroxidases was greatly enhanced by the addition of ABTS [2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] or chlorpromazine, both of which are oxidized to cation radicals by peroxidases. The clinical and dental records of 26 patients with the clinical diagnosis of postradiation osteonecrosis (PRON) managed with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) were reviewed to determine the efficacy of HBO. 19 patients were male and 7 were female; age at the first HBO session ranged from 28 to 80 years (median 57.5 years). All but 8 patients reviewed had some form of surgical management; 7 had mandibulectomy for PRON. The effect of oxygen therapy on the number of irreversibly (ISC) and reversibly (RSC) sickled cells was studied in patients with sickle cell anemia. Inhalation of 50% oxygen in patients who were not in crisis produced a significant fall in RSCs and a lesser fall in ISCs. Nasal obstruction influences respiration during sleep, and nasal packing may be the cause of obstructive sleep apnoea. In order to investigate this phenomenon, perioperative nocturnal oxygen saturation was monitored for 3 nights with continuous, non-invasive pulse oximetry in 12 patients who had total nasal packs after septoplasty. The use of topical nitroglycerin has been reported to aid the healing of chronic skin ulcers. In this study, the effect of 2% nitroglycerin ointment on transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPO2) was investigated in skin adjacent to the area of ointment application. Topical nitroglycerin caused a two-fivefold decrease in TcPO2 in skin next to or up to 9 cm away from the site of application of the ointment.

The etiology of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) has been extensively investigated in recent years. It is generally accepted that the causative organism is Staphylococcus aureus. Five patients with smoke inhalation from house fires presented to the hospital in a comatose state. Carboxyhemoglobin levels were elevated in all five patients, mean=32% +/- 6.
