The authors compared the diagnostical value of traditional operations with the inguinal access and a new method using laparoscopy for treatment of patients with testis aplasia. The laparoscopic method of examination was found to be preferable since it allows the correct diagnosis to be made in 96% of children with cryptorchism.

From January 1981 till October 1991, 47 diagnostic laparoscopies were performed in 50 impalpable testicles. In total, 28 intra-abdominal testes were found. In 14 cases no testes were found, but a deferential duct and vessels were seen. In 7 cases the diagnosis of testicular agenesia was made. One laparoscopy was a technical failure. We bring our results of this safe and reliable procedure, and discuss our management. A review of treatment options for intra-abdominal testes is given.

The advances made in mammography, including its accuracy, safety and publicity, will lead to an increasing number of biopsies of the breast after needle localization. The surgeon must carefully evaluate the mammograms and orient the location of the tip of the wire with respect to the mammographic abnormality and the exact location within the breast. The technique described has been used in more than 600 instances. It has led to the detection of cancer in 20 per cent of nonpalpable suspicious mammographic findings. It is well tolerated, readily accomplished, cost effective and accurate.

Ultrasonic hysterography was performed in 104 patients, between the 2nd and 5th postpartum day. An unexpectedly high number of women (16%) exhibited an abnormal uterine configuration. Inspection, palpation, transillumination and anamnesis together with laboratory findings very often do not allow differential diagnosis of scrotal swellings. Ultrasound can differentiate between extra- or intratesticular processes and are of great help in deciding for conservative oder surgical interventions. Routine application should be recommended.

Bilateral peritonsillar abscess is uncommon. We have described a patient in whom it was misdiagnosed as bilateral hypertrophy of the tonsils. Direct palpation of the tonsils, which helped in the diagnosis in our patient, should be done routinely in patients with suspected peritonsillar abscess.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the utility of posterior lumbotomy with a 3-4 cm incision through which the finger is inserted to palpate the kidney and perform percutaneous nephrolithotomy when radiological guidance is not available.
