Nested variant of urothelial carcinoma.

Nested variant of urothelial carcinoma is a rare neoplasm that is histologically characterized by large numbers of small, closely packed, haphazardly arranged, poorly defined, confluent irregular nests of bland-appearing urothelial cells infiltrating the lamina propria and the muscularis propria. Due to the cells' deceptively bland appearance, the tumors are sometimes misdiagnosed as benign lesions, leading in some cases to a significant delay in establishing the correct diagnosis and thus contributing to this neoplasm's advanced stage. Nested variant of urothelial carcinoma must be differenti

[Maxillary mucocele: two case reports and review of literature].

Mucoceles are benign expansive conditions, chronically evolving, from paranasal sinuses. Most frequent localized in the ethmofrontal area and related with sinusal ostial drainage. Maxillary mucoceles are rarer and related with traumatic, tumoral or surgical pathologies, particularly with the Caldwell-Luc incision. These mucoceles demand an aggressive treatment als those etmofrontals in order to achieve a radical exeresis through an outer incision. We report 2 cases of maxillary mucocele. The first was a big one of idiopathic type, the other was associated to an inverted papilloma sitting in th

Two newly identified human papillomavirus types (HPV 40 and 57) isolated from mucosal lesions.

Two new papillomaviruses, HPV 40 and HPV 57, were isolated from a PIN lesion and an inverted papilloma of the maxillary sinus, respectively. HPV 40 showed a 13% homology to HPV 7 by reassociation kinetics and HPV 57 showed a 17% homology to HPV 2 and 25% homology to HPV 27. Hybridization of the DNA of these papillomaviruses to a wide variety of different tumor biopsies revealed that HPV 40 was present in a few genital condylomata acuminata as well as in bowenoid lesions. HPV 57 DNA was present in an oral wart, a genital condyloma acuminatum, and verrucae vulgares lesions from two immunosuppres

Condylomatous lesions of the uterine cervix with special reference to squamous cell carcinogenesis.

528 women with either a dysplastic or a neoplastic change in the squamous epithelium of the uterine cervix were histologically assessed with special emphasis on the detection of the newly discovered condylomatous lesions (flat, inverted and papillomatous). A total of 289 condylomatous (CO) lesions were found, the flat being most frequent (78.9%) followed by the inverted (14.5%) and the papillomatous ones (6.6%). The mean age (31.8 years) of the women with CO lesions was significantly lower (p less than 0.0001) than that of their non-condylomatous (N-CO) counterparts (43.0 years). The classical

Outcomes of sinonasal oncocytic papilloma by endoscopic approach in 69 patients.

OBJECTIVE: Sinonasal oncocytic papilloma (SOP) is a rare subtype of sinonasal papilloma. There are currently few reports on its clinical features and outcomes after endoscopic surgical resection. This study aims to explore the clinical characteristics of SOP and potential factors predicting tumor recurrence through a single-center retrospective case series analysis. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 69 patients who underwent endoscopic surgery of SOP from June 2012 to April 2019. The data of patients' demographics, clinical features, follow-up period, and treatment outcomes we

Middle turbinate resection is unlikely to cause empty nose syndrome in first year postoperatively.

PURPOSE: Empty nose syndrome (ENS) is characterized by nasal dryness, crusting, and paradoxical nasal obstruction most commonly after inferior turbinate resection. ENS has also been reported to occur after middle turbinate resection (MTR), and concern for causing ENS is a possible reason surgeons preserve the MT during endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). The objective was to determine whether MTR during ESS led to ENS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective case series of 95 consecutive patients that underwent bilateral subtotal MTR during ESS with either Draf IIB or Draf III frontal sinus

Quantitative analysis of multiple elements in healthy and remodeled epithelium from human upper airway mucosa using nuclear microscopy.

Elements are vital in airway mucosal physiology and pathology, but their distribution and levels in the mucosa remain unclear. This study uses the state-of-the-art nuclear microscopy facility to map and quantify multiple elements in the histology sections of nasal mucosa from patients with nasal polyps or inverted papilloma. Our results demonstrate that P and Ca are the most abundant elements in mucosa and their distinct difference between epithelial and subepithelial regions; more importantly, our results reveal decreased amounts of Cu and Zn in the remodeled epithelium as compared to the nor

Tomography in expansile lesions of the nasal and paranasal sinuses.

Of 35 nasal and paranasal sinus masses examined by radiography and tomography, 22 malignant tumors showed purely destructive growth. Bone expansion was observed in 13 benign, and 2 slowly growing malignant masses. Pluridirectional tomography in carefully selected projections is often necessary to reveal expansile growth. The 13 expansile lesions, including mucocele, neurofibroma, dermoid, epidermoid, cementifying fibroma, angiofibroma, inverting papilloma, and cylindroma, are briefly described. Tomographic appearance alone did not characterize histopathologic entities. However, distinctions ma

Low-Grade Epithelial Proliferations of the Sinonasal Tract.

Low-grade epithelial proliferations of the sinonasal tract include Schneiderian papillomas, respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma, seromucinous hamartoma and low-grade non-intestinal adenocarcinoma. There is considerable overlap in their clinical presentation, endoscopic appearance, and imaging features. Although well-described diagnostic criteria exist, a definitive diagnosis may be difficult to reach on a small biopsy. Schneiderian papillomas are divided into fungiform, inverted, and oncocytic types, each with characteristic clinical and morphological features. The latter two may prog

[Diagnostic problems of virus-induced atypical squamous cell proliferations in the area of the anus and genitalia. A case report on Bowenoid papulosis].

Papillomatous proliferations of squamous epithelium of the genital and anal region termed Bowenoid Papulosis (BP) macroscopically resemble condylomata acuminata, whereas histologically they show in part severe dysplasias. Despite the similarity of these lesions to Bowen's disease they are - like condylomas - induced by papilloma viruses and may regress spontaneously. Condyloma-like but predominantly flat proliferations of squamous epithelium of the transitional zone between exocervix and endocervix, which are likewise caused by viruses and have a prognosis similar to that of BP, are even more

Sinonasal spindle cell carcinoma presenting with bilateral visual loss: A case report and review of the literature.

Spindle cell carcinoma (SpCC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). SpCC of sinonasal origin is relatively rare and more aggressive than normal SCC. It most commonly involves the maxillary sinus, and rarely the sphenoid sinus. The present study reports a case of sphenoid sinus SpCC presenting with bilateral visual loss. Following endoscopic sinus decompression surgery, the patient was referred to the Oncology Department for a staging workup, and subsequently received concurrent chemoradiotherapy; however, the vision of the patient was not recovered, despite treatment. To the best

Rhino sinusal bilateral hamartoma: a case report.

The hamartoma is a benign rare tumor constituted by a mixture of tissue. It is very unusual in the nasal cavity. The objective of the study is to describe an unusual case of bilateral nasal hamartoma. We report a 52-year-old male patient with a bilateral paranasal hamartoma of the ethmoid and maxillary sinus. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery was performed to completely remove the masses. The reported localization is unusual because the most common site in the nose is the posterior septum. Although hamartoma arising from the rhino sinusal region is very rare, head and neck surgeons must know

[Transitional cell carcinoma in the ureter showing inverted proliferation: a case report].

A case of transitional cell carcinoma in the ureter showing inverted proliferation is reported. A tumor in the middle third of the right ureter was found in a 67-year-old male complaining of gross hematuria. Since positive findings of malignancy were obtained in a washing examination of urine cytology, right nephroureterectomy was performed. The gross specimen consisted of a polypoid and pedunculated 22 x 8 mm tumor which showed a smooth surface as in normal ureteral mucosa. Histopathologically, the tumor was lined with normal transitional epithelium but filled with transitional cell carcinoma

Recurrent respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma of the nasal cavity.

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) refers to a rare entity characterized by excessive proliferation of the normal glandular elements of the respiratory epithelium present as mass lesions in various body sites. The pathophysiology of the disorder is still debated. The condition can closely mimic inverted papilloma, adenocarcinoma, and nasal polyposis clinically, radiologically, and pathologically. However, distinction from the above disorders is important in view of the excellent prognosis associated with complete excision of REAH. Recurrence is uncommon with complete excision,

An evaluation of factors which affect recurrence and malignancy of sinonasal papillomas.

OBJECTIVE: Sinonasal papillomas are rare benign tumors. They challenge otorhinolaryngologists due to their high recurrence rate and malignant transformation. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and demographic factors associated with recurrence and/or malignancy of sinonasal papillomas. METHODS: This retrospective study included 49 patients who were operated on between 2014 and 2020. Clinical and demographic characteristics of the patients were retrieved from the patients' records. RESULTS: The recurrence rate was determined to be 12.2% and the malignancy rate was 8.2%. Rec

Sarcoid-like reaction of the orbit in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

Sarcoid-like reaction (SLR) has been reported in patients with solid tumor malignancies, lymphomas, and patients receiving immunotherapy. SLR is often incidentally found during positron emission tomography/computed tomography scans as hilar and/or mediastinal lymphadenopathy. SLR has also been found in the lung, spleen, bone marrow, and skin. Biopsy of these lesions shows noncaseating granulomas. When systemic criteria are not met for sarcoidosis, these noncaseating granulomas are termed SLR. We present the first case in the literature of a case of orbital SLR in a patient with concomitant dif

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma: a review.

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) is an uncommon lesion of the upper aerodigestive tract first described by Wenig and Heffner in 1995 as prominent glandular proliferations lined by ciliated respiratory epithelium originating from the surface epithelium. The entity is seen most often in male adults. Clinically the lesion presents as a polypoid mass, often in one or both nasal cavities, though other locations have been described. While REAH is benign, awareness and recognition of the lesion is important because it can be easily confused grossly and microscopically with more thr
