Seven new cases of intestinal capillariasis were detected in Kasr El-Aini University Hospitals, Cairo, during the period from July 1997 to June 1998. A parasitological study concerning the morphological features of Capillaria philippinensis recovered from the stool of Egyptian cases was carried out. Eggs were separated, cultured and used to infect Oreochromis nilotica niloticus, a famous popularly consumed type of fresh water fish in Egypt in a trial for identification of the fish intermediate host for this parasite, but infection had not developed in the intestine of this species of fish.

The aims of this study were to analyze the seasonal distribution of infective larvae on the soil surface, to determine whether numbers of infective larvae near faeces were related to the faecal egg count of individuals, and to relate the distribution of larvae to environmental characteristics. Larvae were recovered from damp pads, applied to the soil surface in an annulus around fresh, identified stools of individuals who were participating in a larger epidemiological study. This provided an estimate of exposure to infection at the time of defaecation. Transmission was restricted to the rainy

Grazing ruminants suffer from various helminth infections particularly those caused by gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasites, which have a considerable impact on their welfare and productivity. To treat these infections, the intensive use of macrocyclic lactone (ML) anthelmintics has led to the emergence of drug-resistant parasite populations worldwide. The standard method for detecting resistance, the Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test (FECRT), is susceptible to misinterpretation, leading to flawed management decisions that undermine parasite control efforts. Thus, there is a pressing need f

Helminthiasis in horse breeding stands out due to the damage caused by this infection, which is mainly controlled by anthelmintic drugs. Knowing the population dynamics of helminths in a given region is therefore essential, as environmental conditions have a major impact on the development of these parasites in pastures. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of seasonality on helminths. It was carried out between October and September of the years 2015/2016, 2018/2019 and 2021/2022. A total of 147 animals were used, 64 females and 83 males, all from the same herd. Fecal samples wer

Over the past three decades, equine strongylid egg reappearance periods (ERPs) have shortened substantially for macrocyclic lactone anthelmintics. The ERPs of ivermectin and moxidectin were originally reported in the 8-10 and 12-16 week ranges, respectively, but several recent studies have found them to be around 4-5 weeks for both actives. This loss of several weeks of suppressed strongylid egg output could have substantial implications for parasite control. This study made use of a computer simulation model to evaluate the impact of shortened ERPs on the anthelmintic performance of ivermecti

Gastrointestinal nematodes cause serious economic losses in sheep production systems. To determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with these parasites, a study was conducted on 595 sheep in Córdoba, Colombia. Prevalence and parasite burden were determined using the McMaster technique. Larvae were cultured from feces to identify the nematode genera. For the analysis of associated factors and parasite burden, data means, medians, and confidence intervals were compared. A georeferenced data analysis was performed and an epidemiological map was constructed. An overall prevalence of 88.

This study evaluated the effect of three feeding levels on the pathogenesis and establishment of H. contortus upon the first infection of parasite-naïve Pelibuey hair sheep lambs. Forty-two 6-month-old hair sheep lambs (24 ± 4 kg) raised parasite free from birth were used. The lambs were assigned to 3 groups (n = 14), and each was fed a diet designed for different daily weight gain (DWG): 75 g/d (Diet 1), 125 g/d (Diet 2) and 200 g/d (Diet 3). After four weeks of diet adaptation, 10 lambs/group were infected with 450 L3H. contortus/kg BW (infected), and 4 lambs/group were kept parasite-free (N

The present study was conducted to detect the therapeutic effect of Moringa oleifera and Thymus vulgaris oils on hepatic coccidiosis in experimentally infected rabbits. Also, immunomodulatory effect of the two oils was detected. Twenty-four Newzealand rabbits were used in this study and divided into 4 groups; healthy rabbits, experimentally infected rabbits with Eimeria stiedae oocysts, and two infected treated groups (one with moringa (200 mg/kg) and the other with thyme (500 mg/kg) oils). The results showed highly significant reduction in oocysts shedding (P<0.001 and P<0.05) in the two infe

BACKGROUND: The dynamics of helminth infection in African elephant populations are poorly known. We examined the effects of age, sex, social structure and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) as primary drivers of infection patterns within and between elephant populations.
METHODS: Coprological methods were used to identify helminths and determine infection patterns in distinct elephant populations in Maasai Mara National Reserve, Tsavo East National Park, Amboseli National Park and Laikipia-Samburu Ecosystem. Gaussian finite mixture cluster analyses of egg dimensions were used t

Targeted selective treatment (TST) aims to aid in the control of gastrointestinal nematodes in small ruminants, identifying animals that require treatment with the purpose of preserving the Refugia population and delaying the buildup of anthelmintic (AH) resistance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of both productive and clinical indicators in the selective treatment of gastrointestinal parasites in growing lambs. Two experiments were carried out between 2015 and 2016. Experiment 1: lambs (n = 70) exclusively raised on pasture were evaluated from the ages of 60 day

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of anthelmintics in goats raised under mountain farming conditions in northern Italy. On 8 goat farms (n = 143 animals), a faecal egg count reduction (FECR) test was done after farmers conducted their routine anthelmintic treatments. Furthermore, on 5 goat farms (n = 135 animals) a FECR test was done under controlled conditions applying oral formulations of a macrocyclic lactone (ML), benzimidazole (BZ) (partly in combination with salicylanilide (SA)) or a combination of imidazothiazole (IT) and SA on the same farm. AR was assumed if FECR a

Experimental Echinococcus multilocularis infection and deworming was repeated three or five times in nine dogs at various re-infection schedules. The mean number of worms decreased more than 91% in dogs with repeated infection, compared to first infection controls (n= 6). The copro-antigen assay and the egg count in the faeces suggested that the worm burden gradually decreased each time the dogs were re-infected. To examine whether such worm exclusion was a non-specific response, five dogs were sequentially infected with the parasite four times and subsequently fed freely for 6 months. Even af

Many dogs display coprophagic behaviour. Helminth eggs can passively pass the dog's digestive tract and this may result in a false positive diagnosis of infection with gastrointestinal helminth parasites. For a period of one year, faecal samples of dogs were examined monthly using the Centrifugal Sedimentation Flotation (CSF) technique with a sugar flotation solution (s.g. 1.27-1.30 g/cm(3)). If a sample tested positive for canine helminth eggs, the owner was asked to submit another sample after preventing the dog from eating faeces for 3 days. If the second sample again tested positive for th

Studies of gastrointestinal parasite prevalence in Papio have either focused on a single troop or compared prevalence among troops that share migrants but differ in degree of human contact. Little is known about the extent of variation in prevalence where obvious factors that may drive prevalence (e.g., human contact) are absent, so it is difficult to interpret variation when these factors are present. To address this issue, we studied troops of Guinea baboons (Papio papio) that had almost no contact with humans or domesticated species of plants or animals. We tested the null hypotheses that c

Infection caused by intestinal parasites is still a common health problem in a poor-hygiene population especially for children in developing countries. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 781 Karen students (age: 3 to 19, males: 325, females: 456) to determine the current status of intestinal parasitic infections in a mountainous area in the North of Thailand. The study was drawn from three schools in the Doi Inthanon region, in Mae Chame district of Chiang Mai province, from December 2002 to June 2003. The techniques used for the diagnosis were: stool concentration by using the 'forma

Biomphalaria straminea snails from Argentina fail to shed cercariae even if exposed to high doses of Schistosoma mansoni EC miracidia. Alternative explanations for this failure are that miracidia are unable to penetrate the snail's epithelium or that the miracidia are killed by the snail's defense system. To discriminate between these 2 possibilities, B. straminea snails were individually exposed to increasing doses of miracidia. Susceptible B. glabrata were used as controls. Exposed snails were fixed 12 hr after exposure, and histological sections of the whole specimens were examined. Miracid

Fourteen nematode parasite-naïve kids were given a mixed larval inoculum (approximately 17,250 infective larvae) via stomach tube. Twenty-two days after infection, the kids were randomly assigned to control and treatment groups of seven animals each. Mean eggs per gram for control and treatment groups were 4304 and 5315, respectively. Kids in the treatment group were given ivermectin (0.2 mg kg-1) administered by subcutaneous injection. At necropsy, the mean numbers of Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis for control and treatment groups were 2259 and 0, and 3033 and 773, re
