Parasitic lung diseases are caused by a number of parasites as a result of transient passage in the lung or as a result of an immunologic reaction. The clinical presentation may be in the form of focal or cystic lesions, pleural effusion or diffuse pulmonary infiltrates. With increasing globalisation, it is important to consider parasitic infections in the differential diagnosis of lung diseases. This is particularly important since early identification and prompt therapy result in full cure of these conditions. In this review, we summarise the most common parasitic lung diseases.

Vaccination is an efficient means of combating infectious disease burden globally. However, routine vaccines for the world's major human parasitic diseases do not yet exist. Vaccines based on carbohydrate antigens are a viable option for parasite vaccine development, given the proven success of carbohydrate vaccines to combat bacterial infections. We will review the key components of carbohydrate vaccines that have remained largely consistent since their inception, and the success of bacterial carbohydrate vaccines. We will then explore the latest developments for both traditional and non-trad

Parasitic infections of the central nervous system (CNS) comprise a plethora of infectious agents leading to a multitude of different disease courses and thus diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The prevalence of different pathogens is basically dependent on geographic and ethnic backgrounds, its infectious route frequently involving a third party, such as flies or domestic animals. The present review focuses on cerebral malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum infection, and Toxoplasma gondii encephalitis. Fungi produce a large variety of inflammatory conditions of the CNS with a variegated sp

This month's Genome Watch describes how whole-genome sequencing used for surveillance purposes has enabled the identification of new drug resistance markers in the malaria parasite.

Symptoms in a diarrhea patient are most commonly due to a virus or a bacterium, but they may also be caused by a parasite. A long incubation period is typical of intestinal parasite infections, and in addition to diarrhea they cause prolonged symptoms such as abdominal pain and nausea. Parasitic cyst forms are secreted with feces and are highly tolerant against various environmental conditions. The infections are caught via fecally contaminated food or drink. The diagnosis is based on a formalin-fixed fecal parasitic specimen, leading to further investigations when necessary.

Infectious myositis may be caused by a wide variety of bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic agents. Parasitic myositis is most commonly a result of trichinosis, cystericercosis, or toxoplasmosis, but other parasites may be involved. A parasitic cause of myositis is suggested by history of residence or travel to endemic area and presence of eosinophilia. The diagnosis of parasitic myositis is suggested by the clinical picture and radiologic imaging, and the etiologic agent is confirmed by parasitologic, serologic, and molecular methods, together with histopathologic examination of tissue bio…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Global climate change and population explosion leading to changes in natural ecosystem and travel across the continents have resulted in an increase in the transmission of parasites to human beings. This review focuses on recent advancements in parasitic lung infections.
RECENT FINDINGS: Invasive parasitic diseases including lung infections are increasingly being reported in patients with immunodeficiency syndromes. A recombinant kinesin-related antigen of Leishmania donovani has been validated with ELISA using urine samples for the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis. Pyru…

Blastocystis can be isolated from roughly 25% of patients suspected of intestinal parasitosis. At least ten subtypes (STs) have been isolated from humans and animals, and recent data demonstrate that the pathogenicity of the parasite is subtype-dependent. For instance, ST1 and ST7 are more prevalent among patients with symptoms than healthy individuals, whereas ST3 predominates among healthy carriers. The article sums up basic aspects of the parasite and gives an introduction to new data and points of criticism of previous studies seeking to unravel the pathogenicity of the parasite.

In tropical areas, parasitic diseases are very frequent during pregnancy. Malaria is the most frequent, with different complications in pregnant women (anaemia, cerebral malaria, abortion) and in the fetus (low birthweight, congenital malaria), mostly after first pregnancies. Diagnosis must be confirmed rapidly and the treatment is effective with most of antimalarial drugs. Prophylaxis is possible by intermittent sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine treatment. Hookworms infestation increases the anemia. Schistosomiasis can be liable to sterility or dystocia. Congenital transmission of visceral leishmania

Blood hypereosinophilia (eosinophilia count of more than 500 per microliter, i.e., 0.5.10(9)/L) is a laboratory finding that requires a careful workup. Review of the patient's medical history and clinical examination can usually rule out non-parasitic causes. Parasitic infections must be sought by examination of stool, urine, and blood examinations and by serological tests. These examinations, with special techniques for cosmopolitan and tropical parasites and for digestive or tissular parasites, must be repeated. Improvement of blood eosinophilia and of the serum antibody titers is one criter…

Parasitic infections, although common in tropical and subtropical regions, are prevalent worldwide because of changing immigration patterns and in international travel. The burden of worm infection is enormous and the intensity of infection is usually high among the poor and in immunocompromised individuals. Pulmonary eosinophilia occurs in almost all metazoan infections. In the Western world, the most common infections are caused by Strongyloides, Ascaris, Toxocara, and Ancylostoma species. Most of the nematodes multiply within the human host and cause pulmonary eosinophilia during larval mig

Recently, the term of clinical immunoparasitology has been coined to indicate the application of immunological methods to the laboratory diagnosis of parasitic infections. In particular, serological diagnosis (indirect diagnosis) is useful especially in the cases of toxocarosis, trichinellosis, echinococcosis, cysticercosis, toxoplasmosis, amoebic abscess, some filariasis, visceral leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis. When possible, for infections caused by protozoa or helminths, the "gold standard" is represented by direct diagnosis performed by microscopic and/or macroscopic observation of the pa

In many areas, Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba dispar are found together and their microscopic appearance is identical. Biochemical tests which can show cell wall differences are often falsely negative and the only possible way is to treat with metronidazole when amoebiasis is suspected. In case of clinical failure of metronidazole, a bacterial diarrhea is frequently found. Giardia is an other protozoa frequently found in stools of children in endemic areas. Diarrheas due to Giardia are possible in normal children and frequent in malnourished. They can determine severe atrophy of jejunal m

In the last two decades, major immunodeficiency syndromes have strongly influenced medical parasitology. Some animal parasitoses, once unknown in human medicine, have become zoonotic and sometimes anthroponotic. In other cases, the clinical evolution of human parasitoses has been severely aggravated and/or modified in immunodeficient patients especially in toxoplasmosis, cryptosporidiosis, leishmaniasis, strongyloidiasis and scabies. The parasites implicated are varied (protozoa, helminths and even Acaridae) but have in common the capacity to reproduce in or on the human host. These immunodefi…

Intestinal protozoal infections cause significant disease not only in the tropics but also in immunocompromised hosts and returning travellers in the developed world. Precise diagnosis of protozoal intestinal infection by microscopy can be difficult. Enzyme immunoassays for antigen detection are being used for some protozoal infections with some limitations which will, it is hoped, be overcome by molecular techniques. Nucleic acid amplification techniques could help improve detection of microsporidial species, which are difficult to detect microscopically and allow differentiation between Enta
