Conventional roentgenograms usually reveal a fatty tumor by its characteristic radiolucency. Exceptions to this presentation are the intrathoracic fatty tumors which are more often radiopaque than radiolucent. Obesity and steroids may cause focal, excessive accumulation of fat which can cause a mass effect and become symptomatic from pressure changes. Tubular widening of the superior mediastinum is characteristic mediastinal lipomatosis. Liposarcomas may or may not appear radiolucent. When a calcified retroperitoneal mass appears at least partially radiolucent, a liposarcoma must be suspected.

Pathologic findings and clinicopathologic correlations in 276 consecutive appendectomies performed in a university hospital are reviewed. In 59 cases, appendectomy was incidental to another elective procedure. In the other 217 cases exploration was performed as an emergency, and acute appendicitis was present in 160 of the cases (74 per cent); 54 of these were complicated by perforation. In the remaining 57 cases there was either some other pathologic process clinically distinct from appendicitis or no identifiable source of the preoperative symptoms. Six hundred and twenty-one hysterectomies were performed at National Women's Hospital, Auckland, during 1975. Abnormal vaginal bleeding was the clinical indication in 50.72% of the cases. Fibroids, pelvic mass, prolapse, stress incontinence and cervical neoplasia were the indication for 45.88% of the cases. Total hysterectomy was performed in 618 (99.5%) patients whilst sub-total hysterectomy was done in only three cases. Computed tomography (CT) provides accurate localization of pathologic processes within the abdomen and also frequently contributes information regarding the nature of the process. A review of 50 patients with suspected genitourinary pathology studied with CT suggests that this new noninvasive diagnostic modality can provide increased diagnostic accuracy but that it will not replace conventional abdominal radiography and intravenous urography as the primary screening examination for such patients. A review of 800 pathological temporal bones collected from autopsy cases revealed 333 ((41.6%) to have some type of otitis media; purulent otitis media (52.5%), serous otitis media (6%), mucoid otitis media (4.5%), and chronic otitis media (36.9%). Three cases are described in which there was concurrent development of acute cholecystitis and a second acute abdominal illness. Acute cholecystitis occurred in patients with acute appendicitis, small bowell obstruction, and acute colonic diverticulitis. Experience with three such cases over the course of eight years by a single surgeon suggests a possible aetiological link between the two diseases. It is suggested that, under some circumstances, exploration of an acute abdomen may need to be more than cursory.
