Tractional Retinal Detachment Secondary to CHRPE-Associated Hamartoma With Macular Involvement: A Case Report.

Retinal hamartomas associated with hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium are often linked to phakomatoses. This case report presents a 6-year-old patient with vision loss due to tractional rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Surgical intervention (vitrectomy) improved retinal architecture and visual acuity, although significant baseline visual acuity loss persisted, suggesting that early surgery may prevent complications and optimize outcomes. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2025;62(3):e31-e34.].

Treatment of intravitreal ciliary body neovascularization.

A patient who developed intravitreal ciliary body neovascularization following cyclocryotherapy for neovascular glaucoma is presented. Presenting vitreous hemorrhage limited her visual acuity to 20/200. After panretinal photocoagulation, the intravitreal ciliary body neovascularization regressed, the vitreous hemorrhage cleared, and the patient's visual acuity was 20/30. The possible pathogenesis of intravitreal ciliary body neovascularization is reviewed, and the reason for regression of the neovascular tissue is hypothesized.

Validation of the acuity card procedure for assessment of infants with ocular disorders.

The acuity card procedure has been shown to be a rapid method for the assessment of monocular and binocular grating acuity in normal infants from birth through 36 months of age. The current study seeks to validate the procedure further by using the acuity cards to assess 20 2- to 8-month-old infant patients with ocular disorders, including aphakia, strabismus, ptosis, and orbital hemangioma. Assessments were made with the acuity cards by two different observers, both blind to the infant's diagnosis, and by a third observer using a traditional forced-choice preferential looking (FPL) procedure.

Branch retinal vein occlusion treated by intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide on visual acuity in branch retinal vein occlusion. METHODS: The prospective comparative nonrandomized clinical interventional study included 28 patients (28 eyes) with branch retinal vein occlusion. The study group consisting of 10 consecutive patients received an intravitreal injection of 20-25 mg of triamcinolone acetonide. The control group including 18 patients did not receive an intravitreal injection. The mean follow-up was 8.7+/-4.4 months. RESULTS: In the study group, mean visual acuity increased significantly (P

Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NA-AION): outcome for visual acuity and visual field defects, the Singapore scene 2.

We report the six months follow-up findings in relation to visual acuity and visual field defects in a series of Singaporean patients with non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy seen in the neuro-ophthalmology service of the Singapore National Eye Centre. 90% of the patients were Chinese, and the most common vascular risk factor was hypertension. Visual acuity was normal at the outset in 40% of cases and unchanged in 85%, and the assessment of visual acuity alone was not found to be a satisfactory method to determine prognosis. Visual field defects were found in all the affected pat

A simplified technique for stable transscleral suture fixation of posterior chamber intraocular lenses.

We describe a technique for implanting ciliary sulcus posterior chamber intraocular lenses (PCIOLs). This technique uses radial keratotomy (RK) markers to facilitate PCIOL centration, 2-point scleral suture fixation for each haptic to prevent PCIOL tilt, and partial thickness sclerotomies to prevent suture erosion. Postoperative results of 20 eyes with PCIOLs sutured to the ciliary sulcus were reviewed. Suture placement was determined using a Mendez degree gauge with Bores axis marker (Katena USA, Denville, NJ). Two-point scleral suture fixation without a scleral flap was used for each haptic.

Cambridge stimulator treatment for amblyopia. An evaluation of 80 consecutive cases treated by this method.

Eighty consecutive patients with amblyopia ex anopsia were treated with the Cambridge Stimulator (Cam). Each patient received an average of six, 15 minute treatment sessions at a frequency of 1-2 per week. Treatment was terminated after two consecutive treatments indicated no change in visual acuity. Sixty-nine patients were given minimal occlusion simultaneously with Cam. treatment. Eleven patients were given full-time conventional occlusion simultaneously with Cam. treatment. Of the first group, 47% achieved 6/12 or better visual acuity, although if the 14 eccentric fixators were excluded, 6

Traumatic retinal detachment from a water balloon slingshot.

The authors describe a case of traumatic retinal dialysis with retinal detachment from a water balloon slingshot during a "water balloon war." A 31-year-old woman presented with decreased visual acuity in her right eye 2 days after being hit by a water balloon. The visual acuity in the right eye was counting fingers and fundus examination showed subtotal retinal detachment secondary to a superonasal dialysis. The patient underwent a scleral buckling procedure with external drainage, and at 18 months visual acuity was stable at 20/50 with attached retina. Water balloon eye injuries can result i

Effect of hyperbaric oxygen treatment in central retinal artery occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a rare and serious ophthalmologic emergency with a bad prognosis. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) treatment has been reported to improve visual acuity of CRAO patients. However, there are unknown variables for HBO2 treatment such as initiation period, number of sessions and efficacy. In this study, we aimed to investigate efficacy of HBO2 treatment in CRAO patients. METHODS: Patients who had been diagnosed with CRAO and referred to our Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment Unit with the indication of HBO2 treatment were included in the study. Patient demo

Successful Management of a Keratoconus Patient With Rarely Used Large-Diameter Corneal RGP Contact Lenses: A Case Report.

Keratoconus is a degenerative corneal disease that is usually bilateral and asymmetric. In keratoconus, the cornea progressively thins and steepens, leading to vision impairment. This unique case report highlights the management of a keratoconus patient with infrequently used large-diameter corneal RGP contact lenses. This method of fitting provides remarkable stability and patient comfort. Here, I describe a case of a 39-year-old man with a known history of keratoconus. He was referred to our contact lens clinic for management with RGP lenses. Throughout the eye exam, the patient was deemed e

[Unilateral optic neuritis and Miller Fisher syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: Miller Fisher syndrome is an autoimmune neuropathy characterized by the clinical triad of ataxia, areflexia and external ophthalmoplegia. Ophthalmologic involvement in this syndrome is most often represented by motility disorders. The diagnosis is confirmed by the presence of anti-GQ1b antibodies. OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 65-year-old patient referred by his treating physician to the emergency department for ataxia, dizziness and decreased visual acuity in the left eye. In addition, the patient presented with clinical signs of subacute appendicitis for 2 weeks. After

Transient Visual Loss due to Infliximab Administration: A New Adverse Event to Biologic Therapy in Crohn's Disease.

A 29-year-old patient diagnosed with Crohn's disease was proposed to start infliximab (IFX) therapy. During the infusion of the first dose, the patient complained of sudden visual impairment. The ophthalmologic evaluation confirmed a best-corrected visual acuity of 8/10 of the left eye (Snellen Chart). Despite its favorable safety profile, IFX is associated with several paradoxical adverse events. Ocular adverse events represent part of this group of complications. We report a case of a not yet reported paradoxical adverse event during the first administration of IFX. The event manifested as a

Cardiopulmonary bypass in a glaucoma patient.

Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in a patient with glaucoma is a challenge. The glaucomatous eye is at risk during CPB. We report a case of ostium secundum atrial septal defect that was not amenable to device closure. The unique feature in the patient was the presence of congenital glaucoma. She was blind in the left eye, and the visual acuity in the other eye was decreased because of glaucoma. She underwent direct closure of the atrial septal defect under CPB and fibrillatory arrest, with intraoperative monitoring of intraocular pressure. There was no change in visual acuity after 1 year of follo
